Chapter 6 The Favor of the Past
Although I had expected it, I still felt unlucky.
Konjac watched his young lady change more than ten expressions in a short while, and found it a little funny.
Seeing that the person who left the Chen family was not sad about being divorced, but became more lively day by day, she felt more and more that leaving the Chen family was a great thing.
Otherwise, she was afraid that in a few years, the Chen family would be starved to death by the master and servant.
"Has Miss Liang replied?"
Hearing Cui Qingyi's question, Konjac quickly replied, "I didn't reply to the letter. It was Miss Liang's mother who came directly to tell me that she wants to meet you at the restaurant tomorrow."
Cui Qingyi nodded when she heard that. That day, she asked Konjac to send out several visiting cards, many of which were from her close friends, but among all these people, only Liang Yuan paid attention to her.
It seems that childhood friendships are not reliable. There must be some interests involved so that people can continue for a long time. Otherwise, if they leave this era for a long time and communication is inconvenient, even the best relationships will fade.
Konjac was a little puzzled: "Miss, I remember that Miss Liang was not familiar with us before. When we came back this time, everyone else wanted to stay away from us. Why is Miss Liang willing to come out to see you?"
At this point, Cui Qingyi felt that there was no need to hide it. "Do you remember when we went to visit the Liang Mansion before I came of age? I happened to help Miss Liang at that time. Maybe she still remembers my kindness."
As for what specific help she needed, Cui Qingyi didn't say. Some things are better left to you.
Konjac nodded when he heard this. Comparing this with the warmth and coldness of the people over the past few days, Konjac said with some emotion, "This Miss Liang is quite good. She's much better than some people."
Seeing that she had made the mistake of thinking that everyone was a good person again, Cui Qingyi did not rush to correct her. After all, she would gradually change after seeing her more often.
The most important thing right now is to solve the problem in front of her so that she can get out of here quickly.
Qinghe City is the largest prefecture in the east of the Jin Dynasty. It has many counties under its jurisdiction, and each county is divided into several townships.
Linshui County, where Cui Mansion is located, is considered a relatively prosperous one in Qinghe City. The local county magistrate, Xin Liang, is said to have influential relatives in the capital. If he can stay in Linshui County for a few years, he will be promoted.
Cui Qingyi didn't know whether County Magistrate Liang could be promoted, and she didn't care how far County Magistrate Liang could go in the future, but County Magistrate Liang's wife also had the surname Cui, which was very important to Cui Qingyi.
Linshui County is a small place after all, and most of the Cui clan members who settled here are estranged from the main family. If there are those with good relationships, they can find ways to send their promising children to the academy run by the main family to receive instruction from great scholars. But seeing that the Yuan family had been trying for so many years and still hadn't sent Cui Wenxu there, Cui Qingyi knew that this was not an easy task at all.
But Liang Yuan's younger brother Liang Jin, who is fifteen years old this year, has already studied at the Bai Ludong Academy founded by the Cui family for two or three years. This shows that Mrs. Liang has a close relationship with the Cui family.
The county town of Linshui County has a square layout, with various shops along the four main streets in the east, south, west and north.
Liang Yuan invited Cui Qingyi to meet at the Laike Restaurant on North Street. Cui Qingyi guessed that this restaurant must be Mrs. Liang's private property.
Liang Yuan was sitting in front of the window on the second floor, watching from afar as Cui Qingyi and her servant actually came on foot. She frowned immediately, thinking that Mrs. Cui, whom she had met before, seemed to be a very kind lady, so how could she be so cruel to her own daughter?
Then I thought about how this person was hastily married off by her family just after she came of age, so it didn't seem strange anymore.
Seeing Cui Qingyi and her maid come in, Liang Yuan stopped looking outside and waited quietly for someone to come up.
She and Cui Jingyi were not very familiar with each other, and they had almost no contact over the years. However, when she was fifteen years old and came of age, she was plotted against by her aunt's family. If Cui Qingyi had not come to her aid, for the sake of her parents and brother, she would have had to grit her teeth and fulfill her aunt's dirty thoughts.
It can be said that Cui Qingyi did not just save her once, but saved her for the rest of her life.
While recalling the events of the past, Cui Qingyi took Konjac upstairs and immediately saw Liang Yuan sitting in front of the window.
The two of them had different identities, and Cui Qingyi had no intention of getting close to Liang Yuan. She bowed politely and said, "Miss Liang."
Liang Yuan's attitude was a bit more enthusiastic: "It's been a few years since we last met. Sister Qingyi looks even better. Come and sit down. Today, you and I can catch up on old times."
The maid who served Liang Yuan looked at Cui Qingyi curiously. She was the person re-selected by Madam Liang before Liang Yuan got married. She didn't know much about Liang Yuan's past, so she wondered why her lady was so enthusiastic towards this person who seemed to be of low status.
"Thank you, Sister Liang, for remembering me. With my current status, I hope I won't cause any trouble for you."
Cui Qingyi spoke politely, but Liang Yuan waved her hand: "What are you talking about? I don't care about that."
Cui Qingyi smiled and said that some polite words were just for listening, but one should never take them seriously, otherwise one would be embarrassed.
Liang Yuan said so, but Cui Qingyi couldn't help but be tactful. After drinking a cup of tea, she mentioned the purpose of her visit today:
"If I had no other choice, I wouldn't dare to bother Sister Liang.
I was young at that time, and I thought that marriage was a matter of parents' orders and matchmaker's words, so I was married to Qinghe City as soon as I came of age. But when I arrived at Chen's house, I found out that Chen Linan had a childhood sweetheart, a little cousin. They grew up together and hated me for separating them.
We have been married for several years, but our relationship has not been harmonious and my mother-in-law doesn't like me. Now that I'm being divorced, I have nothing to say.
I always thought that if I returned to Linshui, I would have my parents and relatives to rely on. But when I finally came back, I realized that a daughter who is married off is like water spilled, and there is no place for me in the Linshui Cui family anymore.
These were the facts that happened to Cui Qingyi. There was nothing to fabricate except her sadness. Perhaps because they were both women, Liang Yuan felt a little sad when she looked at her.
She spoke tentatively, "Although I sympathize with your situation, I can't help you with these things. Is there anything else you need me to do?"
Liang Yuan asked, and Cui Qingyi answered, "I came here today because I do need Sister Liang's help with something. My mother wants to find a noble family and send me there as a concubine."
Liang Yuan stared at Cui Qingyi with wide eyes.
After a while, he said, "As far as I know, the Cui family has a long-standing ancestral precept that no woman of the Cui family will ever become a concubine. Madam Cui, are you sure you want to do this?"
Cui Qingyi nodded with tears in her eyes.
If Liang Yuan or Madam Liang were asked to interfere in the Cui family's daughter's marriage, Liang Yuan would never agree even because of the previous favor. However, since the matter involved the Cui family's ancestral precepts, Liang Yuan would be able to take care of it.
Liang Yuan lowered his eyes and thought for a moment. "I'll go home soon and tell my mother the truth about this matter. I can't guarantee whether my mother will care or not, but regardless of whether it succeeds or not, the favor I owed you back then will be written off. Are you willing?"
