Chapter 38

Grandma Hao was right; Mei's dad came to pick up the coconut flakes by himself on Sunday.

"Why didn't Fifth Sister come with you?" Grandma Hao was a little surprised that Mei's mother wasn't there. Usually, Mei's mother would come with her when she came here.

“She’s been vomiting quite a bit lately, and I was worried that going back and forth would make her feel even worse, so I didn’t let her come along,” Mr. Mei said happily.

"You're pregnant again? Good, good! I was wondering what was going on with you two. You're so young, how come you haven't heard from each other for years? It's good that you're pregnant. But you can't keep vomiting. There are still some plums left over from the pickling I made for Third Brother's wife last time. Take them back to Fifth Sister later."

"Hehehe! Thank you, Mom." Dad scratched his head, a little embarrassed.

"Dad, did you come to pick me up and take me home?" Ye Si has been particularly free lately. Apart from practicing horse stance at a fixed time every day, she spends the rest of her time wandering around outside.

It was almost noon when Ye Si strolled home for lunch and spotted Mei's dad's bicycle as soon as she entered the yard.

Coconut flakes: Could it be that Grandma was right?

"Sisi's back! Let's go home after lunch." When Mei's dad saw his daughter, he immediately went up to pick her up. He originally wanted to lift her up high, but he overestimated himself. He only managed to lift her halfway before he ran out of strength.

"Put me down." Ye Si could clearly feel Mei's father's arm trembling. To avoid any accidents, Ye Si asked Mei's father to put her down.

"..." Mei's father awkwardly put his daughter down, feeling that his daughter disliked him.

After dinner, Mei's father carried his daughter's luggage to the yard to push her bicycle.

When Mei's dad came this time, he brought something extra with his bicycle: a wooden thing that looked like a stool was tied to the crossbar. At first, Ye Si wasn't sure what it was, but after Mei's dad tied the luggage to the back seat, Ye Si couldn't help but notice.

"I want to sit here?" Ye Si looked at the small stool and felt that it was very flimsy. Wouldn't it fall apart if she walked around for a while?

"Yes! Dad made this especially for you, do you like it?" Dad got into the car, patted the little stool, and waited to see the admiring look in his daughter's eyes.

"It looks very flimsy."

"...I made it, it's guaranteed to be sturdy." Mei's father looked at his daughter seriously. He suddenly realized that his daughter no longer trusted him. This wouldn't do. He had to make his daughter trust him again.

"..." Ye Si hesitated, wanting to tell Mei's father that she could break the stool into pieces with one touch, but then she remembered Wang Gousheng's dying words: "Don't always say what's on your mind, especially don't let anyone know about your Dali."

"Come on, let Dad lift you up. We need to get going." Dad adjusted the angle of the bicycle and prepared to bend down to lift his daughter onto the bike.

"I'll do it myself." When Ye Si saw that Mei's father was standing on one foot on the car and even trying to bend down to hug her, she was a little worried about his back. It seemed that most people here didn't have good backs. Uncle Hao twisted his back the other day when he bent down to hug her.

Without waiting for Mei's dad's reply, Ye Si climbed onto the frame and onto the crossbar, but somewhat embarrassingly... Mei's dad's stool was too small!

"Uh! Well... I'll make you another one when we get home." Seeing his daughter struggling to squeeze herself into the small stool, Mei's father felt embarrassed and decided to make her a bigger stool when they got home today.

"No need to do it. When my uncle takes me out, I always sit in the back seat." Ye Si felt that putting a stool on the crossbar was really useless. It was too much trouble to get up and down. It was more convenient to sit in the back seat.

"Sisi likes to sit in the back seat? Then Dad will make you a stool to put in the back seat." When Mei's father heard that his daughter liked to sit in the back seat, although he felt it was not safe, he could still fulfill his daughter's little wish.

"..." Ye Si really wanted to tell Mei's father that she didn't want the bench, but thinking of what Wang Gousheng had said, she chose to remain silent.

It was already past 3 p.m. when they got back to the Mei family home. Mei's mother was already waiting anxiously inside. She figured the father and daughter should be arriving soon, so she simply waited for them at the gate of the courtyard.

"You're finally back! Why did it take you so long?" When Mei's mother saw the father and daughter arrive, she quickly opened the gate and let Mei's father ride straight into the yard.

"We had lunch there. Mom knew you vomited quite a bit this time, so she brought out the plums that I pickled for my third sister-in-law last time." Mei's father stopped the car and tried to take his daughter out.

"Let me carry her." As soon as Mei's father stopped the car, Mei's mother stepped forward to carry her daughter down.

"Hey! Don't move! You're not alone anymore. This kind of rough... cough! Let me hold our daughter." Dad Mei quickly reached out to stop Mom Mei's movements.

Once the car had come to a complete stop, Ye Si jumped off the vehicle on her own.

"Slow down! This child has become too wild at my mother's!" Mei's mother was startled by her daughter's actions, fearing that she would fall if she jumped down like that.

"Don't worry, our daughter is chubby but very agile. She climbed onto the bus by herself."

"You can't just jump off like that! There are so many sharp corners on this car, what if you bump into something?" Mom rolled her eyes at Dad and started helping him unpack the luggage from the back seat.

"Where's Mom?" Mei's father carried his things into the house and found that Mei's grandmother was not there.

"Mom went out to buy meat. Sisi is coming back today, and Mom plans to make braised pork for her."

Grandma Mei bought the meat and hurried home. Once home, she put the meat in the kitchen and went inside to find her granddaughter.

"Where's Sisi? Come out quickly so Grandma can see her!" As soon as Grandma Mei saw that her granddaughter wasn't in the main room, she went straight to the inner room.

"Grandma." Coconut Silk was still very affectionate towards Grandma Mei. She remembered that Grandma Mei used to cook meat for her every day.

"Oh dear! Our Sisi seems to have lost weight since the New Year," Grandma Mei said, sitting on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and hugging her granddaughter.
