Mei Liang saw his parents and grandmother off on the train, watching it slowly disappear into the distance, his heart filled with desolation.
Mei Liang: I really want to go too! I've never been to Kyoto before, why don't you buy me a ticket too?
Mei Liang returned home heartbroken. Looking at the empty house, he sat on the cold kang (a heated brick bed) and suddenly felt a chill run through his body.
Mei Liang: Am I really my parents' biological child? Why are they treating me like this?
"Mei Liang, you bastard! Come out and help us! Didn't we agree that after you dropped off your parents, you would come and help us with our things? Why did you go straight home?" Xu Aiguo, carrying bags and packages, pushed open the gate to Mei Liang's yard with his butt and shouted.
Zhang Yuanchao pushed his bicycle, which was laden with belongings, and followed Xu Aiguo into the courtyard.
"Oh dear, I completely forgot about it." Mei Liang quickly rushed out to help Xu Aiguo with his things.
"If we hadn't just run into Zhu Zi, who said he saw you go home, we would still be waiting there like idiots!" Xu Aiguo stuffed all the things into Mei Liang's arms and vigorously shook his slightly sore arms.
"Hehehe." Mei Liang chuckled as he carried the things into the kitchen, knowing he couldn't interrupt at this moment, or he'd get a beating.
Before long, three men and five women entered the courtyard, and everyone began to bustle about enthusiastically.
The girls started cutting meat and washing vegetables, while the boys set up the grill, lit the fire, and started stringing wires to install lights in the yard.
By dusk, everything was almost ready, and the barbecue grill was placed at the kitchen doorway for easy access.
A table was set up in the middle of the courtyard, with skewers of meat already laid out on it. Mei Liang took off his short-sleeved shirt and stood shirtless in front of the grill, starting to grill the skewers.
Everyone sat down around the table, started chatting and joking, and waited for the food to be ready.
"Mei Liang, you're really amazing. You even managed to borrow a grill." Qian Tu looked at Mei Liang with admiration, feeling that this kind of capable man was the most reliable.
Her gaze inadvertently fell on Mei Liang's strong and powerful arms. Qian Tu blushed and quickly looked away, afraid that someone would see her.
Xu Aiguo curled his lips. It wasn't Mei Liang who was powerful; it was Master Mei Si who was powerful. If Mei Si hadn't been Xu Liang's boss, Xu Liang would never have lent them a grill.
However, Xu Aiguo didn't expose Mei Liang, letting these clueless girls think that way. Maybe Mei Liang would say goodbye to being single because of a barbecue grill.
"Come and get your skewers, all done." Mei Liang wiped the sweat from his face and beckoned to his few friends who only had eyes for women.
Xu Aiguo went straight into the house and brought out a bottle of baijiu (Chinese liquor), filling the glasses of every boy, including Mei Liang.
Of the female classmates, only Hu Ju, Zhang Yuanchao's girlfriend, ordered half a glass of baijiu (Chinese liquor); the others all drank soda.
After everyone had finished eating and it was getting dark, Zhang Yuanchao turned on the lights that had been set up earlier, took out a tape recorder, and started playing music.
As the cheerful music started, those who could dance immediately began to move to the music, while those who couldn't were pulled up to learn.
Qian Tu can't dance and doesn't want to learn. She always felt that dancing wasn't something a proper girl should do.
Seeing that everyone was having fun and not paying attention to this side, Qian Tu simply moved a chair next to Mei Liang and started chatting with him.
Xu Aiguo repeatedly winked at Mei Liang, who only knew how to eat foolishly, signaling Mei Liang not to miss the opportunity.
"Are your eyes twitching?" Mei Liang frowned as he looked at Xu Aiguo, not understanding why he kept blinking.
"..." Xu Aiguo pounded his chest, then simply turned his back and focused on dancing with Liu Yanling, no longer wanting to pay attention to Mei Liang, that blockhead.
When Qian Tu saw that Mei Liang had finished eating, he assumed that Mei Liang would go dancing.
"Are you going to dance now? I... I don't know how." Qian Tu suddenly felt an urge to learn; she wanted to dance with Mei Liang.
"What are you dancing for? I need to tidy up. If I don't clean up tonight, the yard will be full of flies tomorrow." Mei Liang shook his head, indicating that he had important business to attend to and didn't have time to dance.
Qian Tu's eyes lit up, and he stood up to help Mei Liang tidy up the table.
Qian Tu: Mei Liang really has something important to do! I knew Mei Liang was different from the rest of them!
Zhang Yuanchao originally wanted to go and help, but Hu Ju had drunk too much and wouldn't let go of him no matter what. He could only give Mei Liang a helpless look and continue dancing with Hu Ju in his arms.
Zhang Yuanchao: Yes, taking care of your partner is still the most important thing!
Is Mei Liang diligent? Zhang Yuanchao and Xu Aiguo, who grew up with him, know best. This guy is too lazy to even wash his clothes. If others don't say his clothes smell, he can wear them forever.
Mei Liang was so diligent this time because he was afraid of making too much mess and getting scolded by his father when he got back. After all, he had held a party at home without informing his parents.
Everyone played until after 9 o'clock, and it was time for the girls to go home. Only three of the girls lived in the same direction, so the other two had to be driven home separately.
After discussing it, everyone decided that Xu Aiguo would see Liu Yanling off, Liu Hai would see Hou Yuxin off, Zhang Yuanchao would see Hu Ju off, and Qian Tu and Wang Hui would see her off.
Qian Tu was somewhat disappointed. She would have preferred Mei Liang to take her, but she was too embarrassed to say so. She lowered her head in frustration and didn't say another word on the way back.
After sending the girls home, the boys returned to Mei Liang's house. They had already told their families that they would be staying at Mei Liang's house that night.
There were girls around earlier, so the boys didn't drink enough. Now there are only six of them left, and Xu Aiguo took out the half-bottle of wine he had left and planned to have a second round.
The group sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) and drank with the two leftover cold dishes until late at night. In the end, everyone was drunk. Zhang Yuanchao, who was still somewhat conscious, staggered to the edge of the kang and turned off the light.
