Chapter 34 Chen Shan
Chapter 34
In the evening, the four people walked down the mountain leisurely along the bamboo forest.
After returning to the old house, I saw that grandma had prepared a large table of delicious food.
After dinner, Qiao Yue said she wanted to take Huang Dou out for a walk, and Yuan Ke naturally wanted to follow.
Lin Yu admired his senior sister's good physical strength and was happy to give up the task of walking the dog.
He moved two rattan chairs and placed them under the corridor, inviting Chen Wan to lie down and enjoy the cool air.
Chen Wan took out two Want Want crushed ice cream bars from the refrigerator and handed them to Lin Yu.
The walls of the house are not high, and if you look outward, you can see the colorful sunset.
Lin Yu asked Chen Wan, "What wish did you make today?"
"What about you?" she asked instead of answering.
Lin Yu frowned in confusion, "Will the wish not come true if I say it out loud?"
"That means birthday wishes." Chen Wan withdrew his gaze from the tassel-like leaves of the maple poplar tree and looked at him.
"That's right." Lin Yu felt relieved and said in a gentle tone, "I just hope your score can get you into the university you want to go to."
Chen Wan was stunned when he heard this, and whispered back, "I don't have a particular university I want to go to."
"Your teacher said you have good grades. Have you considered your ideal college?"
Generally, students in high school work hard to get into their ideal university.
After hearing that Chen Wan didn't have an ideal school after the exam, Lin Yu, as a person who had experienced it, advised her, "The results will be out tomorrow. You should think carefully about choosing a school and your major."
"Did you graduate from the police academy?" Chen Wan suddenly turned the topic to Lin Yu.
"No, I studied at Linbei People's University of Political Science and Law." Lin Yu paused and explained to her, "But I am a national defense student, which is similar to the police academy. But in terms of professionalism, my senior sister and other colleagues who graduated from the police academy are more professional."
"National defense students?" Chen Wan's high school was affiliated with a key high school and also had quotas for national defense student elections. She was not unfamiliar with this term.
"But I heard that most graduates of national defense programs work in government departments. Why did you become a criminal police officer?"
To be fair, being a police officer is considered a grassroots job with low pay, heavy workload and high risks.
It is a far cry from a promising, smooth and stable position in an institution.
Lin Yu chewed on the ice and answered her, "Actually, I never thought I'd become a police officer. There was a part of me that was motivated by emotion."
"Acting on impulse?" Chen Wan looked at him. "Has anything happened to you?"
"When I was in college, I took a criminal investigation course. The teacher gave me a lot of inspiration." Lin Yu tilted his chin slightly, and the dim light fell on his high nose bridge, showing another kind of maturity.
He recalled in a gentle voice, "That teacher later became my and my senior sister's mentor. In the criminal police profession, before actually starting to investigate a case, there is always a senior criminal police officer to guide you. Because I admired Teacher Zhou Zongqi so much, I resolutely chose to become a police officer after graduation."
"Zhou Zongqi..." Chen Wan felt that the name was familiar, but he couldn't remember where he had heard it.
Lin Yu saw her thoughtful expression and said, "You probably don't know him, but there must be relevant records in the news. The teacher once cracked a human trafficking and drug smuggling case that shocked the whole country. It was probably around 2004, implicating a large number of officials and setting off a wave of "double regulation" incidents."
During those years, the National Commission for Discipline Inspection stepped up its anti-corruption efforts and thoroughly investigated major domestic cases.
Lin Yu, who was still a high school student, lived in a military compound not far from his home. From time to time, he heard that someone was being "double-regulated."
He didn't quite understand it at that time, but he understood a lot after studying the Fa.
After he finished speaking, he scratched his hair, realizing that Chen Wan was just an elementary school student at that time, "Did I make it too complicated?"
When Chen Wan heard the word drug smuggling, his expression became serious, and he finally remembered where he had heard this name.
Chen Shan was a drug addict, so he knew some drug dealers and was good friends with a drug dealer named Zhang.
Once when he came home, he mentioned the name Zhou Zongqi with gritted teeth.
But Chen Wan only remembered that the drug dealer's surname was Zhang, and he knew nothing about his other background.
Even my memory of his appearance has become vague.
After Chen Shan was imprisoned, his whereabouts were unknown.
Inadvertently thinking of his father Chen Shan, Chen Wan suddenly felt a little lost.
After he was released from prison, he left without saying goodbye, and living expenses continued to flow into his bank card.
After the call that came after the college entrance examination, every time Chen Wan called again, he only heard the cold sound of an electronic machine.
The user you are dialing is busy. Please try again later.
All this made her fall into inexplicable panic and unspeakable loss.
Chen Wan's calls were never hung up, but were never answered.
What is Chen Shan busy with?
The more Chen Wan thought about it, the more worried he became, and a hint of sadness appeared in his eyes.
"What are you thinking about?" Lin met her and her expression was not as natural as before. He held up the popsicle and shook it in front of her.
Chen Wan glanced at Lin Yu and came back to his senses.
The authenticity of the few words in the memories is questionable.
So I didn't tell him about it.
But I didn't expect that this insignificant detail would be an important part that cannot be ignored.
"Our teacher said that the selection of national defense students is very strict. How did you get selected?" Chen Wan changed the subject.
"Speaking of which, I was really lucky to be selected back then. At the interview, the people who went at the same time as me all had excellent resumes. Many children of senior cadres also went." Lin Yu said this, and sighed, "Because they had to look at the student records, from elementary school to university and even graduate school, I quickly glanced at the top few pages and saw a column about the positions held in school. At a glance, everyone was basically a class monitor or a league secretary."
When Lin Yu said this, he sighed deeply and shook his head.
"and yours?"
Lin Yu chuckled twice, "I've been a labor committee member from elementary school to high school, and the highest position I've held in college was only vice president of a club."
Chen Wan was amused by him, "Do you like being the labor committee member?"
"It's not that I like it, but it's just that the labor committee member can command others to work, which feels great."
"......" It seemed that there was nothing wrong. Chen Wan asked, "What did the interviewer ask?"
"He also asked me why I had been a labor committee member for so many years."
"You're not going to give the same answer as before, are you?"
Lin Yu waved his hand and said no, "I said it very loudly at the time because I wanted to serve the people."
Just imagine that scene, and you can feel that Lin Yu has been naive since he was a child.
"And then, by some strange coincidence, I was actually chosen." He scratched his head. "I guess I left such a deep impression on the teachers back then."
Chen Wan nodded in agreement.
"But what really made me decide to become a police officer was what my criminal investigation teacher, Mr. Zhou, said: 'Police officers are the seekers of the truth, the shields of victims, and the dividing line between good and evil.' That sentence instantly made my blood boil."
A follower of truth, a dividing line between good and evil.
Lin Yu, who was addicted to watching the TVB Hong Kong crime drama "Forensic Heroes" at the time, was so excited after hearing Zhou Zongqi's words that he couldn't sleep all night.
I even copied this sentence onto my blog and labeled it as a life motto.
"So it was an impulsive decision that led me to choose the police profession." Lin Yu shrugged.
"Have you ever regretted being a police officer?"
"No matter what career you choose, even if it's something you love, there will definitely be times when you regret it. But in order to prevent regrets from turning into regrets, when you love something, you must have no regrets."
After Lin Yu finished speaking, he asked Chen Wan, "Do you have a favorite career?"
As expected, I saw Chen Wan's confused look.
But when his eyes met, her pupils gradually brightened, like the breaking of dawn.
"I didn't before, but it's clear now," she said. "Just consider it as me acting on impulse for once."
"What's clarified?" Lin Yu looked at her seriously.
"You said the police are followers of the truth, so I want to be a guardian of the truth. You seek the truth and protect those who have been hurt, and I want to protect the truth for these people and safeguard their rights."
Chen Wan said word by word, "And I want to be your schoolmate."
Lin Yu was moved by the seriousness in her eyes and smiled, "Junior?"
"Well, Minzu University's flagship major is law, right?" Chen Wan said, taking out his phone to check. "With this score, I should be able to pass."
"Okay, then I'll take you to Minzu University." Lin Yu raised his hand and rubbed her hair.
......
When the results came out the next day, Lin Yu and Qiao Yue hurriedly served tea and water to Chen Wan.
I was at a loss to comfort her, "Don't be nervous... Don't be nervous..."
The two people who had graduated many years ago were even more nervous than the person involved.
Chen Wan's mood was also affected a little, and he had some expectations that he didn't have before.
After entering the admission ticket number, there was a network delay of about thirty seconds.
The four people in front of the computer screen held their breath, opened their eyes wide, and counted the time silently.
After a long thirty seconds, the score finally appeared. After seeing it clearly, the four of them breathed a sigh of relief.
Then Qiao Yue started screaming "Baby you are so awesome!!!"
Lin Yu closed his eyes, his heart returning to his chest. He felt a sense of relief.
Chen Wan breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the score of 715 on the screen. This score should be enough to become a schoolmate with Lin Yu.
Not long after, her high school class teacher called her to congratulate her on being ranked eighth in the province.
"Baby, you're so great." Qiao Yue hugged her and patted her back with satisfaction.
Chen Wan and Lin Yu met eyes, and she mouthed "Senior."
The moment Lin Yu saw clearly, the rhythm of his pulse and heartbeat suddenly skipped a beat.
But emotionally, I was greatly fulfilled.
He couldn't even respond with words, he just looked at her and smiled foolishly.
His friend once said that someone was trying very hard to get close to him.
This was the truth she spoke when she was drunk.
Qiao Yue and Yuan Ke came to town originally to accompany Chen Wan to check her grades, but now the matter is over.
Because of work, I had to go back to South City.
Qiao Yue and Chen Wan said goodbye reluctantly and asked her to come home to play after returning to Nancheng, as Yuan's parents missed her very much.
Before getting on the car, she still asked about Chen Shan.
After receiving Chen Wan's negative answer, he smiled helplessly and comforted her, "I must have had my reasons for not contacting you."
Chen Wan lowered his head and said softly, "I hope so."
After getting in the car, Qiao Yue flipped through the address book and stared at an unfamiliar number.
After hesitating for a moment, he dialed the number.
Yuan Ke saw that she looked surprised and had a frown on her face. Just as he was about to ask who she was calling, the call was connected.
Qiao Yue held her breath and slowly sank down.
He said in a cold tone, "Chen Wan's college entrance examination results are very ideal, and now the team has arranged for someone to protect her, you can rest assured."
She finished her routine and hung up the phone.
She met Yuan Ke's gaze, lowered her head, and bit her lower lip hard.
Silently suppress the sudden annoyance that arises in your heart.
A few days ago, Chen Shan suddenly contacted her and said that he was worried about Chen Wan's safety, and asked Qiao Yue to go and look after her.
Although she didn't understand his inexplicable behavior, Qiao Yue was concerned about Chen Wan's affairs, so she agreed to come to Qinghe Town.
The matter concerns Chen Wan, but Chen Shan still does not contact her.
She recalled that Chen Shan suddenly hung up the phone before Chen Wan took the college entrance examination, and she still couldn't feel at ease.
Qiao Yue couldn't help but start to speculate that Chen Shan must be hiding some secrets, which was why he was so panicked and cautious.
She thought that she must conduct a thorough investigation after returning to the team.
Unexpectedly, it involved a long chain in the darkness.
......
Chen Shan's further questions were interrupted by a busy tone. He was absentmindedly thinking about what Officer Qiao said: Chen Wan's college entrance examination results were very ideal.
His fingers flipped through the address book woodenly and saw the call from Chen Wan before.
Some turbid hot tears fell on the phone screen.
In my field of vision, the word "daughter" became blurred.
Chen Shan raised his hand with difficulty and wanted to rub his eyes.
The action disturbed the indwelling needle on the back of the hand, and a sharp pain spread from the vein to deep in the heart.
The phone suddenly started vibrating, the ringtone was shrill and urgent.
Caller: Daughter.
He wiped his tears helplessly and was about to press the answer button.
I realized it belatedly and looked up to see people standing or sitting in the corridor outside the ward, all looking very angry.
So I watched the screen light up and go out.
An impatient scolding voice came from outside the ward: "Can't you fucking hear the phone ringing?"
Before anyone walked into the ward, Chen Shan turned off his cell phone and put it under his pillow.
"The user you dialed has switched off the phone..."
After Chen Wan heard the mechanical female voice repeat itself three times, the phone automatically hung up.
These cold words brought Chen Wan a sense of loss that was like a tide, impacting her psychological defenses.
A vague sense of unease rose in my heart.
But she gave herself a somewhat lucky explanation: "Maybe I really am busy with something."
When Lin Yu saw her coming back from the phone call, her eyes seemed to turn red.
"Wanzi, what's wrong with you?"
Chen Wan met his concerned gaze and calmed down a little.
"Nothing, my deskmate just called me and told me that her grades weren't very good and she was a little sad."
She made up another excuse to make it up.
Lin Yu looked at Chen Wan's drooping eyelashes, which just concealed the emotions in his eyes.
She was indeed not good at lying and didn't dare to meet his eyes.
But Lin Yu is not an aggressive person, and he also understands Chen Wan's cautious character.
So I cooperated and comforted her, "It's okay, it's normal to feel this way right after an exam. You definitely won't feel ideal."
Chen Wan nodded, then asked Lin Yu what he wanted to eat for dinner, saying that there were pine mushrooms in the refrigerator that the old lady brought.
In midsummer, it rains a lot in the mountains, and the humid climate is suitable for the growth of mushrooms.
Lin Yu asked Chen Wansong how to make delicious mushrooms.
“To bring out the freshness of pine mushrooms to their fullest, the best way to prepare it is to cook it in a steam pot.”
Lin Yu looked at her with admiration, "Wanzi, are you a walking recipe book?"
Chen Wan was at a loss whether to laugh or cry when he heard this, and glanced at him out of the corner of his eye.
"Actually, I saw the dish of steam pot chicken in a book."
Lin Yu nodded with a smile and asked casually, "Recipe?"
"Prose!" Chen Wan raised her voice. "Wang Zengqi's prose collection, 'Be Content with Whatever Happens to You.'"
Take things as they come.
Lin Yu was startled, then started teasing her, "Which one?"
Chen Wan looked at him and said word by word, "Just go with the flow."
She understood that there was something behind Lin Yu's words, so she didn't act shy.
Following him gave her peace of mind.
My thoughts: I've been downplaying Chen Shan's presence. His sudden departure, Qiao Yue inviting Wanzi to dinner the next day, her evasiveness, the phone call during the Gaokao, and the subsequent disconnection were all foreshadowing I'd set up. I've revised the foreshadowing after Chapter 14; if you have any questions, check it out. However, my skills are limited, as the first chapter's plot is almost over, and the second chapter will follow the main plot line, so it's likely to move faster. I'll also be careful about the foreshadowing.
Thank you for watching, thank you Mingmingyue and Youran for your continued support, thank you Weiyang, and thank you Tangtangzi.
Because this involves an area I don't write about often, there are definitely many shortcomings. I will try my best to highlight my strengths and avoid my weaknesses. You are welcome to point out any problems in a friendly manner. However, I am not an expert, so I hope you won't overly criticize my creative freedom. Thank you!!! I will work hard to improve myself!!!
