Chapter 293 Counterattack

Chapter 293 Counterattack

The evening breeze came in through the crack in the ward window and climbed up to the edge of the bed with the smell of disinfectant.

Ji Wan rubbed his temples. The headache was like a tangled vine, taking root in his brain.

"How much money did the Chi family give you?"

Pei Yun clenched the strap of her handbag, her knuckles turning whiter and paler than her face. She looked out the window at a streetlight in the hospital parking lot as if she were looking at a life-saving straw.

"Three... three million or so." Her voice was as thin as a mosquito. "Chi Lin's people, no, I don't quite remember the exact number."

Suddenly, the sound of a cart was heard in the corridor. The creaking sound of the wheels hitting the floor tiles made Pei Yun shudder and her shoulders hunched even tighter.

The door of the ward was ajar, as if someone would push it open and come in at any moment.

Ji Wan tapped the tabletop with his fingertips, his rhythm like the electrocardiogram monitor in the distant ICU, steady and unquestionable.

"I didn't want to agree at first..." Pei Yun's eyelashes trembled slightly, tears hanging on them, ready to fall, "But they offered too much. I still have an elderly mother to support, and my ex-husband owes a lot of debt..."

Ji Wan suddenly sneered, like a knife cutting through glass, "What exactly did you do?"

Pei Yun swallowed, her Adam's apple rolling as if she had swallowed a nail. "Yes, just taking some photos of the account books, as well as the company's financial statements, employee payrolls, and some contract details."

Her clenched fingers loosened slightly, then tightened again immediately. "Sometimes they even ask me to deliberately make mistakes in some accounts."

Ji Wan raised his eyes, his gaze was so sharp that Pei Yun lowered her head and dared not look directly at him.

Outside the ward, the night deepened, like a brush dipped in ink smearing across the sky.

The hospital broadcast system sounded the notice of the nurse on duty taking over, and the sound echoed in the corridor, very desolate.

"Can I go back now?" Pei Yun suddenly asked, her voice trembling with almost pleading tone.

Ji Wan nodded slightly and pointed to the door. This action was more intimidating than a thousand words. "Go back to where you should go."

Pei Yunru was pardoned. When she stood up, her knees hit the chair, making a dull sound.

She staggered to the door, then suddenly turned around, her face full of fear and pleading, "Mr. Ji, can you please not sue me? I promise that in the future..."

"Please remember this." Ji Wan's voice was too calm, but his eyes were filled with ice. "You are not qualified to negotiate with me."

Ji Wan stared at his blurry reflection on the window glass; the outline looked particularly sharp in the night.

The window glass was a little dirty, with old dust accumulated in the corners. The cleaner had never wiped there. The glass covered with fog in the morning was much cleaner than this.

A whimpering sound escaped from Pei Yun's throat, and she squeezed out through the crack of the door. Her footsteps gradually faded away, and the sound of her footsteps on the floor of the hospital corridor was like the sound of stepping on thin ice.

Only after the ward door closed again did Ji Wan let out a long sigh, his shoulders relaxing slightly.

Sun Tian turned off the recording, the light from the screen reflected on her profile, and her eyes flashed with confusion.

"Sister Wan, are you just going to let her go like this?"

Ji Wan didn't answer immediately. Instead, he picked up his phone, swiped a few times, and handed it to Sun Tian. "This is the last batch of data Pei Yun sent yesterday. She even copied the data from the payroll system."

Sun Tian's eyes widened in shock: "What about her?!"

"Yes, the Chi family's next move is obvious." Ji Wan narrowed his eyes slightly, stroking the disappeared mark of the wedding ring on his left ring finger. "It is likely that they will raise our financial problems soon."

"Should we take the initiative and make Pei Yun's affairs public?" Sun Tian asked anxiously.

Ji Wan shook his head slowly and decisively, "No rush."

Her gaze fell on a crack in the ward's ceiling. The gap was like a dormant snake. "The mall is like a battlefield. We have to play the long game to catch the big fish."

Sun Tian blinked, suddenly understood something, and a look of realization appeared on her face.

Ji Wan was rubbing his temples while typing on the keyboard. The screen was filled with the company's recent financial statements.

Sun Tian sat aside and watched her work quietly.

"It's strange," Sun Tian suddenly said, "It seems like the pot of green radish in the nurses' station hasn't been watered since the first day I arrived."

Ji Wan chuckled without looking up, "Chi Lin and the Chi family have a very good plan."

Her hands suddenly stopped typing on the keyboard, her eyes fixed on a certain part of the screen. "They are trying to force me to submit."

"Sister Wan, are we really going to sit on our hands?" Sun Tian bit her nails anxiously and paced restlessly in the ward. "I always feel..."

"Don't act rashly." Ji Wan interrupted her, "This game has been going on for so long. They want a quick victory, but I want to take it slow and let them think they've won."

The cold light from the display screen reflected on Ji Wan's face, outlining a resolute profile.

"You go back first," Ji Wan closed the computer, "We have a tough battle tomorrow."

After Sun Tian left, Ji Wan fell into deep thought.

She knew what Chi Lin would do next. The data was enough for them to fabricate a scandal about financial fraud.

The leak of the payroll would definitely cause dissatisfaction among employees. She stroked the screen of her mobile phone with her fingertips as if stroking a chess piece.

It was late at night, and the footsteps of the nurses on duty could be heard in the hospital corridor, as repetitive and monotonous as drumbeats.

Ji Wan was lying on the hospital bed, but he couldn't sleep at all.

The figure of Chi Wenyan flashed through my mind. He used to be gentle and warm, but now there is no news of him.

She remembered the warmth of his palms and the light in his eyes when he held his newborn twins. Those memories were like leaves in late autumn, falling one by one.

My phone vibrated at 3:17 in the morning.

Ji Wan grabbed it almost immediately, and a message popped up on the screen: [Breaking News: Ji Group commits financial fraud and withholds workers' wages] has become a hot search.

“You came so quickly!”

Ji Wan muttered to himself softly, swiping the screen with his fingers, browsing the overwhelming negative news.

There are indeed many complaints from employees in the comment section, and every word is heartbreaking and hurtful.

Some people said that they worked hard but their wages were deducted, some said that the company's finances were in chaos and the accounts were unclear, and some even revealed that they saw company executives squandering the hard-earned money of employees.

Ji Wan sneered. These accounts were all newly registered, and their speech patterns were all the same.

The photos were obviously taken secretly by Pei Yun, and they had been deliberately photoshopped, with some numbers enlarged and other parts blurred.

“Playing hard to get…” Ji Wan muttered to himself, tapping the edge of the bed with his fingers. “Your tricks are too obvious.”

Ji Wan put down his phone and closed his eyes.

She decided not to respond for the time being, letting the other party think that she had succeeded.

This is a test of patience. Whoever loses patience first will lose.

The hospital cleaner pushed the mop past her ward, and the sound of the pulley rubbing against the ground was like the ticking of a clock.

The automatic door at the end of the corridor opened and closed like a silent sigh.

Ji Wan lay on the hospital bed, his face calm as water, but he had already outlined a blueprint for counterattack in his mind.

She will make Chi Lin pay for his arrogance.

This game has just begun.
