Chapter 335: Choice
"Forget it, I'll go with her once and then end this relationship completely." Chi Lin made up his mind, then thought of Ji Wan and decided to go home and cook dinner for her personally to make up for his neglect these days.
At six o'clock in the evening, Chi Lin returned home and found the house empty.
He first went to the kitchen to check the ingredients in the refrigerator, then rolled up his sleeves and started preparing dinner.
Although he was born into a wealthy family, he was a good cook. Soon, several delicious dishes were placed on the table.
Just as he was setting the table, the doorbell rang.
Chi Lin thought it was Ji Wan who came back, so he walked quickly to open the door, but found that it was his mother Shang Yunmin standing outside.
"Mom? Why are you here?" Chi Lin asked in surprise.
Shang Yunmin was wearing a noble and elegant cheongsam, holding an exquisite gift box in her hand, with an unconcealable anxiety on her face.
"Son, I heard something happened to Wanwan, so I came to see her."
As she spoke, she walked straight into the house and looked around. "Where is she?"
"She...she went to the company and should be back soon." Chi Lin explained, looking warily at the gift box in his mother's hand. "Mom, what are you holding?"
Shang Yunmin smiled mysteriously, "It's a good thing, specially brought for Wanwan."
She opened the gift box, revealing several beautifully decorated packets of Chinese medicine. "This is a decoction specially made by an experienced Chinese doctor. It's especially helpful for fertility. Drink it every night, and you'll be able to conceive soon."
Chi Lin's expression changed, "Mom, this is inappropriate..."
"What's inappropriate?" Shang Yunmin disagreed. "You've been married for so long, it's time for you to have a child. Isn't it for the sake of our Shang family's bloodline?"
Just as Chi Lin was about to explain, the door was pushed open and Ji Wan walked in.
When she saw Shang Yunmin, she was obviously stunned for a moment, but quickly regained her composure.
"Auntie, long time no see." She greeted politely.
Shang Yunmin stepped forward and took Ji Wan's hand, her eyes full of eagerness. "Wanwan, I heard you weren't feeling well? Is everything okay?"
Ji Wan smiled faintly, "It's a small matter, it's okay now."
"That's good, that's good." Shang Yunmin breathed a sigh of relief and immediately picked up the packet of Chinese medicine. "I brought you some good stuff. It's a fertility-enhancing medicine specially made by Doctor Wang from Huichuntang. If you take it on time every day, you'll have good news soon."
Ji Wan's smile froze on her face and she looked at Chi Lin, who awkwardly avoided her gaze.
"Auntie, thank you for your kindness, but I'm very busy with work and have no plans to have children for the time being." Ji Wan declined.
Shang Yunmin's face darkened instantly. "What do you mean by not planning for the time being? You're already 27 years old. If you delay any further, the risks for older mothers will be even greater."
"Mom..." Chi Lin wanted to stop her, but Shang Yunmin continued talking.
"Young people nowadays only care about work, not knowing that the continuation of the family is the most important thing. Wanwan, you and Lin'er have been married for so long, and you don't even have a child. People outside are talking about it."
Ji Wan's expression grew colder and colder. "What people outside say has nothing to do with me. My body, my choice."
"You." Shang Yunmin was furious. "I think you're just deliberately not wanting to have children. Do you want us Shangjia to be childless?"
"Mom." Chi Lin finally couldn't help but raise his voice, "Enough."
Shang Yunmin was shocked by his son's roar and was speechless for a moment.
Chi Lin took a deep breath and tried to calm his anger. "Mom, Wanwan just had an accident and hasn't fully recovered yet. We can talk about having a baby later. You should go back today. I'll visit you another day."
Shang Yunmin was so angry that she was shaking all over, but at her son's insistence, she finally left the medicine angrily and left.
The room fell silent for a moment. Ji Wan stood there expressionless, while Chi Lin stood aside awkwardly, unsure how to start.
"I...I made dinner." Chi Lin finally broke the silence. "Are you hungry?"
Ji Wan looked at the dishes on the table and said softly, "I have no appetite."
Chi Lin said hurriedly: "I'll be back soon."
He hurried out and returned half an hour later with a bouquet of bright red roses in his hands.
"I'm sorry," Chi Lin handed over the bouquet, "My mother is too anxious. I will have a good talk with her."
Ji Wan took the bouquet, her eyes suddenly turned red, and tears silently rolled down her cheeks.
"What's wrong?" Chi Lin panicked and reached out to wipe away her tears.
Ji Wan avoided his hand and whispered, "Chi Lin, do you remember? When we first got together, you said that no matter what happened, you would never betray me."
Chi Lin's heart trembled, "I remember."
"But now, you and Ning Weiwei..." Ji Wan raised her head and looked at him with tears in her eyes, "Do you know how painful it was for me when I found out about your relationship?"
Chi Lin's face turned pale and he didn't know how to respond for a moment.
"Every time she called, you dropped everything to go look for her. That night, you even left your sick grandmother for her and took my car keys..." Ji Wan's voice choked with sobs, "I thought, at least in your heart, I still had a place."
Chi Lin held Ji Wan's hand, his voice low and firm, "Wan Wan, I swear, from now on, there will be no Ning Weiwei. I will completely cut off all ties with her."
Ji Wan raised her eyes to look at him, "Really?"
"Really." Chi Lin promised solemnly, "This Saturday I will confront her and tell her that everything is over."
Ji Wan wiped away her tears and nodded gently, "Okay, I believe you."
The two sat down to have dinner together, and the atmosphere gradually became relaxed.
Chi Lin asked cautiously, "By the way, what are your plans for Saturday?"
"The company has a project to deal with, so I may have to work overtime." Ji Wan answered briefly without mentioning Fu Qichuan's invitation.
Chi Lin nodded and said, "After work, let's go see your mother together. It's been a while since we last visited her."
Ji Wan looked at him in surprise, "Are you willing to go see my mother?"
"Of course," Chi Lin smiled, "She is my mother-in-law. I should visit her more often."
Ji Wan's eyes flashed with emotion, and he nodded gently, "Thank you."
After dinner, the two sat in the living room watching TV. The atmosphere was warm and peaceful, as if they had returned to the past.
Ji Wan leaned on Chi Lin's shoulder, feeling mixed emotions.
She knew that she shouldn't easily believe Chi Lin's promise, but deep down, she still hoped that everything could go back to the way it was before.
On Saturday morning, Chi Lin drove Ji Wan to the company. When the car stopped at the company gate and Ji Wan was about to get out, Chi Lin suddenly grabbed her hand.
"Wanwan, I have some things to take care of here. I'll go see your mother after I'm done, okay?"
Ji Wan looked at him and nodded, "Okay, go directly to the hospital. I'll be there when I'm done."
"Well, I'll be there around two in the afternoon," Chi Lin promised.
Watching Ji Wan walk into the company building, the smile on Chi Lin's face gradually disappeared.
