Chapter 416 Please Come for Tea
The more she thought about it, the more suffocated she felt. Every minute and every second here was unbearable for her.
Seeing Chi Wenyan leaning over to toast with someone, seemingly unable to get away for a while, Ji Wan bit her lip and quietly stood up. She didn't look at him again, not even a word of greeting. She gathered her shawl around her, lowered her head, and walked quickly towards the exit of the banquet hall.
Her high heels made no sound as they stepped on the carpet, just like her mood at the moment, heavy and silent.
She just wanted to escape, escape from those embarrassing looks, escape from those rumors that hurt her heart, and even temporarily escape from the man who made her anxious and worried.
Ji Wan's figure had just disappeared at the door, and Chi Wenyan had just finished talking with his partner. He smiled apologetically and immediately turned around and walked towards the corner he had just been in.
Empty.
Only the glass of cold warm water and the plate of almost untouched fruit lay quietly on the table.
"Wanwan?" Chi Wenyan's heart skipped a beat and he immediately looked around, searching for Ji Wan.
Where's the person? He was here just now.
He took out his cell phone and was about to call Ji Wan when it suddenly rang. It was an unfamiliar encrypted number.
Chi Wenyan frowned and answered: "Who is it?"
A serious, deep male voice came from the other end of the line, with an unquestionable official tone: "Is this Mr. Chi Wenyan? We are from the Municipal Economic Investigation Department."
Chi Wenyan's eyes instantly became sharp: "What's the matter?"
"We have received a report and have preliminary evidence showing that one of your company's projects is suspected of using shell companies to commit contract fraud, involving a huge amount of money and of a serious nature."
The other party's tone was very stern. "We need you to come here immediately to cooperate with our investigation. Mr. Chi, your status is special, and we have given you the utmost respect. Otherwise, we would have come to your house to invite you."
Scam? Shell company?
Chi Wenyan's mind was working rapidly, and he instantly connected the matter with the department manager who had embezzled public funds for gambling. Could it be that the idiot, in order to fill the hole, was desperate and forged his signature to sign some shady Yin-Yang contract?
A chill instantly ran up his spine. This was definitely not a trivial matter.
"Address." Chi Wenyan's voice was as cold as ice. As he spoke, he strode out, looking for Ji Wan.
The anxiety and this sudden crisis intertwined together, making his face terribly gloomy.
He didn't find anyone, so he had to go to where he wanted to go.
Municipal Economic Investigation Section.
The atmosphere was solemn and there was an invisible pressure in the air.
Chi Wenyan sat in a cold interrogation chair, facing two serious-looking investigators. The pale light made the lines of his handsome face look even colder and harder.
"Mr. Chi, this is some of the evidence we have about the Tianhong project using a shell company to commit contract fraud. Your signature is on it." The investigator pushed several documents in front of him.
Chi Wenyan's sharp eyes scanned the document. When he saw the familiar, yet subtly different, signature, his gaze suddenly darkened. It was indeed a forgery! Damn it! Who on earth had framed him?
"This is not what I signed." His voice was steady, with unquestionable certainty.
"We'll conduct a handwriting analysis," the investigator said expressionlessly. "But until the investigation is complete, according to regulations, you need to stay here and cooperate with us. You can contact your lawyer."
Half an hour later, Chi Wenyan's exclusive lawyer Lin Zheng hurried over.
"Mr. Chi!" Lin Zheng saw Chi Wenyan sitting there. Although he was dressed neatly, the fatigue and gloom between his brows still made his heart tighten.
"What's going on?" Chi Wenyan asked straight to the point.
Lin Zheng quickly understood the situation and his expression grew serious. "This matter could be serious or minor. Since they dared to invite you here directly, it means they have some 'evidence'. Even if it's fabricated, it will take time to verify and clarify. What I'm most worried about is that someone is deliberately setting this up."
Chi Wenyan certainly understood. He rubbed his throbbing temples. What he was most worried about at the moment was not the company, but Ji Wan.
"Lawyer Lin," he looked at Lin Zheng, his tone carrying a barely perceptible hint of fatigue and pleading, "I can only see you for now. There's something you must do for me."
"Please speak, Mr. Chi."
"Wanwan, don't let her know about this." Chi Wenyan lowered his voice, his eyes full of worry. "She is pregnant now, she can't get emotionally excited, and her body can't stand any stimulation. I'm afraid she will have wild thoughts."
Lin Zheng was startled for a moment, then nodded: "I understand. Then...how do I explain this to Miss Ji?"
"Just tell her that there's an emergency at our overseas branch. A very difficult project has gone awry, and I need to fly over immediately to handle it. My return date is uncertain." Chi Wenyan quickly made up an excuse. "The cell phone signal might be bad. Tell her not to worry, just stay home and take care of the baby until I come back."
"Okay, I'll definitely do it." Lin Zheng nodded solemnly. "At the company, I'll immediately activate the emergency plan and fully cooperate with the investigation to find the mastermind behind this."
"Yeah." Chi Wenyan closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, his eyes had regained their usual calmness and sharpness. "Go, comfort her. This is the most important thing."
He was temporarily placed in a room, saying he was cooperating with the investigation, but in fact it was no different from house arrest.
The night was deep outside the window, but he had no desire to sleep. All he could think about was Ji Wan's pale face and her lonely back as she left. Wan Wan, wait for me.
On the other side, Ji Wan returned to the empty villa, and the uneasiness in his heart grew like vines.
Chi Wenyan did not come back and the phone could not be reached. The response was always cold: "The number you dialed is temporarily unavailable."
She sat on the sofa, dialing the familiar number over and over again, and her heart sank with each failure.
The whispers at the banquet, Zhao Xiyue's name, the rumors about another child...
It coiled around her like a poisonous snake, making it almost impossible for her to breathe.
Did he go to find Zhao Xiyue?
Does he really have another child?
Countless terrible thoughts rolled around in her mind, making her uneasy.
A sleepless night.
The next day, sunlight shone through the gaps in the curtains, but it couldn't dispel the gloom in her heart. The phone still didn't go through.
Ji Wan couldn't sit still any longer. She needed to go out and get some fresh air, otherwise she would go crazy in this oppressive waiting.
She changed into loose clothes, took her car keys, and decided to drive out for a while. Driving aimlessly might help calm her chaotic thoughts.
The car was driving steadily on the road. Ji Wan looked at the street scenes passing by outside the window, but his heart was still in a mess.
