Chapter 457 The Culprit
She looked at the undisguised disgust and murderous intent in Chi Wenyan's eyes, her legs went weak and she almost collapsed to the ground.
"Wen Yan, you..." Ji Wan wanted to ask again. She could feel that Chi Wen Yan was deliberately hiding something.
Chi Wenyan didn't give her a chance. He was afraid that if he looked at Ji Wan again, he would not be able to help but tell her all those disgusting things, making her feel uncomfortable.
He now just wanted one of the culprits to disappear from his sight immediately.
"Get lost!" He growled at Zhao Xiyue. His voice was not loud, but it carried a thunderous pressure. "Get out of my sight right now. Don't let me see this disgusting face of yours again."
Zhao Xiyue trembled all over when he yelled at her, and tears burst out again. This time, it was real fear.
She knew that Chi Wenyan was truly furious, and she couldn't imagine what the consequences would be if she stayed any longer.
She staggered back a few steps, looking at Ji Wan desperately with tears in her eyes, as if she wanted to beg for mercy, but when she met Chi Wenyan's murderous gaze, she couldn't utter a word. She could only turn around in embarrassment and almost crawled out of the president's office.
She closed the office door in a panic, making a slight sound.
Inside the room, for a moment, the only sounds were Chi Wenyan's heavy breathing and Ji Wan's silent gaze.
Chi Wenyan's chest was heaving violently, and the veins on his forehead were throbbing. It was obvious that he was still angry.
Ji Wan walked over to him and gently held his hand again. This time, his hand was no longer so stiff, but still cold.
"Wen Yan," she said softly, her eyes filled with inquiry and deep heartache, "She's gone. Now can you tell me what happened? Why did you suffer so much?"
She used the word "wronged". She could feel that beneath his anger, there was a deep sense of humiliation.
Chi Wenyan looked at her, the violence in his eyes gradually subsided, replaced by a complex and indescribable emotion. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but in the end he just closed his eyes tiredly.
"Wanwan," he said in a hoarse voice with a hint of fatigue, "There are some things I don't want you to get involved in. They're too dirty."
He was afraid that those dirty calculations would make her have the slightest suspicion and resentment towards him, even though he knew that he was innocent and was being framed.
Ji Wan's heart suddenly tightened. A man as proud and arrogant as Chi Wenyan would actually describe something as "too dirty". It can be seen how dirty and unbearable what he encountered was.
She didn't ask any more questions, but just held his hand tightly, using her body temperature to warm his cold fingertips.
"Okay, if you don't want to talk about it, I won't ask." Her voice was soft but firm. "But Wen Yan, no matter what happens, I will be by your side. We'll find a way to handle Nian Nian's surgery later."
Chi Wenyan felt the warmth of her palm, and the rage and violence in his heart were strangely soothed a little.
He opened his eyes and looked at Ji Wan, a hint of warmth and guilt flashing in his eyes.
Because of Zhao Xiyue and Su Jiujiu's calculations, he couldn't even devote himself to solving Nian Nian's surgical problem at the moment, which made him feel full of apologies towards Ji Wan and Nian Nian.
"Niannian..." He repeated in a low voice, worry returning to his brows.
Su Jiujiu's disappearance was a fatal blow to Nian Nian.
As the night deepened, the tense atmosphere in the office eased slightly due to Ji Wan's gentleness.
However, the worry between Chi Wenyan's brows has not completely dissipated. Nian Nian's surgery is like a huge stone weighing on the hearts of both of them.
Ji Wan accompanied him to deal with some urgent matters, and discussed with him in a soft voice the various possibilities of finding Su Jiujiu.
Time passed by minute by minute. She tried to stay awake, but tears unconsciously filled her eyes. She couldn't completely suppress a light yawn, which was filled with fatigue.
Chi Wenyan keenly caught her tiredness at that moment, his heart tightened, and he looked at her with eyes full of pity.
"Wanwan, it's very late. I'll take you back to rest."
His voice was much lower than before, with a gentleness that brooked no room for questioning.
Ji Wan rubbed his eyes and nodded, "Well, you should also rest early and don't be too tired."
She knew that the pressure in his heart was no less than hers.
The two walked out of the office side by side, without saying a word, but with a tacit understanding.
After getting into the car, Ji Wan fastened his seat belt and turned his head to look at Chi Wenyan's profile as he concentrated on driving.
The man had a well-defined face and a taut jawline. Even in the darkness of night, his imposing aura remained undiminished. However, at this moment, there was a subtle softness between his eyebrows.
The thrilling events of the day, coupled with the tranquility of the night, gradually relaxed Ji Wan's tense nerves.
The heater in the car was on high, and Chi Wenyan had specially turned up some soothing light music. Her eyelids became heavier and heavier, and before she knew it, she fell asleep with her head tilted in the passenger seat.
At the red light, Chi Wenyan stepped on the brakes and turned to look at Ji Wan.
She was sleeping soundly, her long and curled eyelashes casting a small shadow under her eyelids, her breathing was even and long, and her sleeping face, with all her defenses removed, was peaceful and beautiful, making the softest place in his heart collapse.
He stretched out his hand, wanting to brush away a strand of hair from her cheek, but his fingertips stopped just before touching her skin, for fear of disturbing her sweet dream.
He turned up the heater in the car a little and lowered the music volume, his movements extremely gentle.
The car drove smoothly into the residential complex where Ji Wan lived.
Chi Wenyan turned off the engine and did not get out of the car immediately. He just looked at Ji Wan who was sleeping quietly.
He knew how exhausted she had been these days. Because of Nian Nian's surgery and for him, she had hardly had a good rest. An indescribable tenderness and heartache welled up in his heart.
He couldn't bear to wake her.
He leaned over and unbuckled her seat belt very gently to avoid making any noise.
The seat belt slid down, and he carefully extended his arms to her knees and back, then slowly applied force and lifted her up from the seat.
She was light, nestled in his arms, warm and soft.
He lowered his head, looking at her sleeping face, the faint fragrance of her body lingering on his nose, and his heart skipped a beat uncontrollably. At this moment, all the irritability and fatigue seemed to be dispelled by the warmth of her body.
He tightened his arms, holding her more firmly, and walked towards the building where she lived with his long legs.
The night wind was cool, but he didn't feel the chill. The warmth in his arms was his only sensation.
He walked very steadily, afraid of bumping her. After going upstairs, he found her door by memory, freed one hand, accurately took out the key from her bag, and opened the door.
The door opened, and he carried her in and closed the door behind him.
The air in the room was warm and familiar, carrying a scent that belonged to her.
