Chapter 474 Divorce at the Civil Affairs Bureau
Ji Wan's smile was a little forced: "He should be here soon. We made an appointment."
The staff nodded and motioned for her to wait on the side.
This wait lasted for an hour.
The people in the hall changed one after another. Ji Wan gradually became anxious from his initial anticipation, and in the end, only the familiar chill in his heart remained.
"Ms. Ji Wan," the staff member from before walked over, a professional and polite expression on her face, "Is your husband not here yet? Would you like to contact him?"
Ji Wan clutched her phone tightly. On the screen was the urgent message she had sent to Chi Wenyan half an hour ago. It had fallen on deaf ears, with no response at all. She shook her head, her voice a little dry: "I'll wait a little longer."
Another hour passed and the lunch bell rang.
The staff began to pack up and prepare to go off work.
"Ma'am," an older staff member walked up to her, his tone a little impatient, "Look, we're all about to get off work. I'm afraid the person you're waiting for won't be here today, right?"
Ji Wan stood up, his face pale: "We made an appointment for today, he said he would come."
Her voice was not loud, but it was filled with stubbornness.
"Hey, ma'am, there are so many people who change their minds at the last minute and deliberately don't show up for divorce," the older staff member sighed. "Don't just sit there and wait. Why don't you go back and confirm the time with the other party?"
Another younger staff member chimed in, "Yes, ma'am, our systems are about to shut down. It's no use sitting here any longer."
The few people around who hadn't left cast their gazes towards her, intentionally or unintentionally, with inquiry and a hint of indescribable sympathy. Those gazes were like fine needles, piercing Ji Wan's body.
The feeling of humiliation surged into my heart like a tide.
Why was she sitting here like a fool, accepting all these pity and scrutiny?
Chi Wenyan, he did it on purpose. He wanted to humiliate her and embarrass her in this way.
"Ma'am, please go back. We really have to lock the door." The older staff member urged again, and his tone was not so polite.
Ji Wan pursed her lips tightly, her chest heaving violently. She clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deep into her palms, the sharp pain allowing her to maintain a last glimmer of clarity.
She suddenly raised her head, her eyes cold and sharp as she swept over the staff members.
Without saying a word, she turned around and walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau with stiff but firm steps.
The sunlight outside the door was dazzling, but she could not feel any warmth, only bone-chilling cold and boiling anger.
Chi Wenyan, do you think you can trap me like this? Don't even think about it.
The humiliation of being fooled and the overwhelming anger turned into a raging sea of fire in Ji Wan's chest.
She did not go home, nor did she even stop for a moment. She stopped a car directly. The car shot like an arrow from a bow, heading towards the heart of the city, towards the headquarters of the Chi Group, the business empire built by Chi Wenyan.
The taxi stopped in front of the towering Shengyan Building.
Ji Wan paid the fare and pushed open the door. The biting cold wind enveloped her frail figure, but it couldn't blow away the ice in her eyes. She straightened her spine, like a female soldier about to go to the battlefield, each step steady and resolute.
The shiny marble floor reflected her pale yet unusually calm face.
The receptionist put on a sweet professional smile and was about to ask something, but she was intimidated by the cold aura that Ji Wan exuded, and her words got stuck in her throat.
"I'm looking for Chi Wenyan." Ji Wan's voice was calm, as peaceful as the silence before a storm.
"Excuse me, do you have an appointment?" The receptionist composed herself and tried to maintain her professionalism.
Ji Wan's lips curled up in a faint, cold arc: "He made an appointment with me today, but he broke the appointment. Now, I came to meet him to keep the appointment."
Without waiting for the receptionist to say anything, she walked straight to the CEO's exclusive elevator.
"Hey, ma'am, you can't..." The receptionist stood up hurriedly and tried to stop her.
"Let her come up." A steady male voice came from the intercom at the elevator entrance. It was Chi Wenyan's assistant.
He had obviously seen this unusual scene from the surveillance video.
The elevator door slid open silently, and Ji Wan walked in. The metal wall reflected her tense jawline.
Top floor, outside the president's office.
The assistant was already waiting there, with a somewhat polite but distant expression on his face: "Madam, Mr. Chi is in a meeting, you may need to wait a moment."
Ji Wan looked straight ahead, walked past him, and reached out to push the heavy wooden door.
"Madam." The assistant stepped forward and stopped her. "Mr. Chi is really busy. It's an important international meeting. We can't disturb him."
Ji Wan's gaze finally fell on his face, and that look was so cold that it made the assistant's heart shudder: "Get out of the way."
These two simple words carried a firmness that brooked no argument. No one could stop her today.
The assistant was about to say something when the office door opened from the inside.
Chi Wenyan stood at the door, wearing a well-tailored dark suit that made him look even taller. There was a hint of displeasure on his face at having his meeting interrupted, and his brows were slightly furrowed.
When he saw the two people confronting each other at the door, especially Ji Wan's face full of frost, a hint of barely perceptible surprise flashed across his eyes.
"What's going on?" He spoke in a low voice, his eyes sweeping over the assistants, finally settling on Ji Wan.
"I asked her to come up," Ji Wan answered for his assistant, his tone full of obvious sarcasm. "Mr. Chi is very busy, and noble people tend to forget things. I was afraid you forgot what day it was, so I came to remind you."
Chi Wenyan waved his hand, signaling his assistant to leave. The office door closed behind him, isolating him from the outside world.
He walked over to his desk and sat down, his posture calm, as if he wasn't the one who missed the appointment at the Civil Affairs Bureau. "I have an important meeting, and I can't leave on short notice. How did you find the company?"
Ji Wan walked towards him step by step. The sound of her high heels hitting the ground was particularly clear in the quiet office, and each sound seemed to hit people's hearts.
"Important meeting?" She repeated these four words, her voice full of sarcasm. "More important than our divorce? Chi Wenyan, are you telling me that in your heart, a meeting is more important than ending our marriage?"
She stopped in front of her desk, resting her hands on the polished surface. She leaned forward slightly, staring at him with a sharp gaze. "Or did you do this on purpose? Did you deliberately make me wait like a clown in the Civil Affairs Bureau for two hours, accepting everyone's sympathy and criticism?"
Chi Wenyan leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping unconsciously on the table: "I didn't mean that. The matter is indeed urgent."
