Chapter 504 Zhao Xiyue came to visit
When her eyes fell on Ji Wan standing outside the window of the sterile observation room, and the small figure lying quietly in the ward inside the window, her steps suddenly stopped, as if she was grabbed by an invisible force.
The sickly paleness on Nian Nian's little face faded a little, her brows relaxed, and her breathing became even and steady.
Although still thin, its tenacious vitality can be clearly seen through the thick glass.
"Niannian." Zhao Xiyue almost rushed to the glass window, her hands pressed tightly against the cold glass, as if she wanted to penetrate this barrier and touch the child she thought about day and night.
Tears burst out again, silently sliding down and dripping onto the back of her trembling hand.
"My child, my Nian Nian..." She murmured, her voice choked with sobs, and every syllable was filled with the love and pain of losing and regaining.
Ji Wan stood quietly by, watching Zhao Xiyue's near collapse. At this moment, all the resentment and estrangement were diluted by the scene of deep love between mother and daughter.
"She is very well-behaved and strong." Ji Wan spoke, his voice a little softer than when he faced Zhao Xiyue before.
Zhao Xiyue turned around abruptly and faced Ji Wan with a complicated look in her eyes, filled with gratitude, guilt, and a hint of imperceptible humility.
She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but in the end she just bent down deeply and her voice was hoarse.
"Ji Wan, thank you, thank you for saving Nian Nian, thank you for letting me see her..."
At the end of her speech, she burst into tears and her shoulders shook violently.
"It was Sun Zhou who saved Nian Nian. He was the one who donated the bone marrow." Ji Wan corrected her, looking at her with clear eyes, "I just did what I should do."
Zhao Xiyue raised her tearful face and choked up, "I know we can never repay Mr. Sun Zhou's kindness. But you. If it weren't for you persisting, if it weren't for you taking care of Nian Nian with all your heart, I really don't know what I should do."
She wiped the tears from her face vigorously, her voice filled with deep remorse.
"I'm sorry, Ji Wan. I did the most despicable thing in the world. I hurt you and almost hurt Nian Nian and Chi Wenyan."
"There's no need to talk about the past now." Ji Wan interrupted her, his tone calm, "Nian Nian's health is the top priority. She'll be very happy that you can come to see her."
Zhao Xiyue's eyes flickered. She understood the boundaries of Ji Wan's words. She nodded vigorously, tears blurring her vision again. "Yes, yes, Nian Nian is well. That's more important than anything else. Ji Wan, can I still come to see her in the future?"
She asked cautiously, fearing to touch Ji Wan's bottom line.
"You are her biological mother," Ji Wan said calmly, his gaze returning to Nian Nian in the ward. "No one can change this blood relationship. As long as your visit doesn't affect Nian Nian's recovery, I won't stop you."
"Thank you, thank you so much, Ji Wan,"
Zhao Xiyue seemed to have received a great pardon and thanked him repeatedly.
She looked at Nian Nian again, her eyes filled with love and pity, as well as a hint of indescribable regret.
Sunlight streamed in through the corridor windows, casting dappled shadows on the floor. Inside and outside the sterile ward, two mothers, for the sake of their child, temporarily set aside past grievances and shared the peace and hope of the moment.
The tranquility outside the sterile ward was soon broken by a steady yet chilling sound of footsteps.
Chi Wenyan's tall figure appeared at the end of the corridor. He was wearing a neat black suit, his face was stern, and his eyes were as sharp as ice blades, shooting straight at Zhao Xiyue.
Zhao Xiyue had her back to him, staring intently at Nian Nian in the ward, with a hint of cautious tenderness on her face.
However, the familiar suffocating feeling of oppression made her back stiffen suddenly, and the blood drained from her face in an instant.
She slowly turned around and lowered her eyes, not daring to look directly into Chi Wenyan's eyes that could see through everything. Her voice was as thin as a mosquito: "Chi...Mr. Chi."
Chi Wenyan didn't respond, but simply turned his cold gaze away from her and fixed it on Nian Nian in the ward. His gaze was deep and complex, revealing no emotion, but it made the temperature of the entire room drop sharply.
Ji Wan frowned, took a step forward, and quietly stood between Zhao Xiyue and Chi Wenyan, blocking the line of sight that could almost freeze someone. "What are you doing here?"
Her voice was calm, and no emotion could be heard.
Chi Wenyan then turned his gaze to Ji Wan, and said indifferently, "I'm here to see Nian Nian."
"Nian Nian is fine and doesn't need your visit. You have stayed here long enough before. You can leave now." Ji Wan refused to give in.
The atmosphere suddenly became tense.
Zhao Xiyue stood aside, feeling very uncomfortable, clutching the corners of her clothes tightly with both hands, her knuckles turning white from the force.
She looked at Nian Nian, who was sleeping peacefully, and then at the two people facing each other, feeling a mixture of emotions. She wanted to say something, but was afraid that if she spoke, she would upset this fragile balance.
She could only muster up her courage and turn her gaze back to Nian Nian in the ward. She whispered to the child, almost whispering, "Nian Nian, Mommy is here."
Her voice was nasal and her eyes were red again.
She reached out her hand and gently traced her daughter's small outline through the glass.
Chi Wenyan caught a glimpse of this scene out of the corner of his eye and frowned slightly.
He didn't look at Zhao Xiyue, but instead spoke to the air, his voice cold and expressionless: "Visiting hours are limited, please don't disturb the child's rest."
This order to expel guests couldn't be more obvious.
Zhao Xiyue's body trembled violently, and the last trace of blood on her face disappeared. She looked at Nian Nian greedily again, her eyes filled with reluctance and despair.
She knew she shouldn't ask for more. She turned around and bowed deeply to Ji Wan, her voice choked with sobs: "Ji Wan, thank you, I'm leaving now."
After saying that, she left quickly as if escaping, her back looking hurried and lonely.
Looking at Zhao Xiyue's embarrassed back, Ji Wan didn't feel happy at all. Instead, she felt an inexplicable irritation. She turned to look at Chi Wenyan with a cold look in her eyes: "Now, it's time for you to leave."
"Wanwan," Chi Wenyan took a step forward, trying to close the distance between them, "We..."
"Don't call me Wanwan!" Ji Wan suddenly raised her voice, her eyes filled with disgust and alienation, "Chi Wenyan, I'll say it again, leave here, I don't want to see you."
Chi Wenyan's face darkened, his eyes gazing at her deeply, his lips tightly pursed, as if suppressing something. He had no intention of leaving, but stood stubbornly where he was.
Just then, a rapid cell phone ring broke the deadlock outside the ward.
