Chapter 627 My Heart is Beating
Ji Wan's heartbeat became chaotic again for a moment.
She placed the cake box on the coffee table and tried to sound relaxed and natural. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming? Did you just get off the plane? Try this. It's your favorite flavor."
She opened the box and pushed the exquisite cake in front of him, like a little animal eager to please its owner.
Chi Wenyan's gaze moved from the cake to her face, and he accurately captured the flash of nervousness and uneasiness in her eyes.
He didn't move, but only slightly opened his thin lips, his voice as low as the strings of a cello: "Ji Wan, do you think I'm here to accuse you?"
Ji Wan froze, raised her eyes, and met his bottomless eyes.
"Using a piece of cake to shut me up?" He took a step forward, his tall figure looming over him, carrying a strong masculine aura. "Are you afraid that I'll blame you for staking your entire fortune on a man you don't know much about? Or are you afraid that I'll be angry, so you kept such a big thing from me?"
Each of his questions hit Ji Wan's heart precisely.
Her cheeks felt hot, she lowered her eyes and muttered softly, "I didn't..."
That lack of confidence pleased Chi Wenyan.
He suddenly reached out his hand, pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly.
The man's chest was broad and warm, and the familiar breath instantly enveloped her, causing her tense nerves to suddenly relax.
She only heard him sigh in her ear, using a complex tone mixed with helplessness, pride, and deep love, "My wife, in just two months, created a miracle that shocked the entire business world. How do you think I should feel?"
Ji Wan leaned in his arms in a daze, not saying a word.
"I'm proud of you." Chi Wenyan tightened his arms, almost rubbing her into his bones and blood. "I'm so proud... I'm even a little jealous of that man named Feng Lou, who was the first to share your vision and courage."
He is not a man who cannot distinguish right from wrong, nor is he a petty-minded man.
What he saw was her radiance, her dazzling appearance as she finally broke free of all constraints and stood at the top of the world.
Ji Wan's eyes suddenly warmed up, and all the uneasiness and anxiety in her heart were instantly replaced by a huge warmth. She reached out and hugged his waist tightly, burying her face in his strong chest.
"Chi Wenyan..." Her voice was choked with a barely perceptible sob, "You bastard, you scared me to death."
Chi Wenyan laughed softly, the vibration of his chest transmitting to her through the thin fabric. He let go of her, cupped her face, and gently stroked the corners of her slightly red eyes with his fingertips.
"So, this cake," he lowered his head, his eyes landing on the neglected dessert on the coffee table, "is it my hush money, or is it a reward for victory?"
Ji Wan was so amused by him that he burst into laughter and punched him: "This is a 'peace of mind pill' for you!"
"Oh?" Chi Wenyan raised his eyebrows, leaned over and pecked her on the lips, his voice hoarse, "A reassurance pill is not enough. I prefer you to feed me yourself."
His eyes were as hot as fire, making Ji Wan's cheeks flush.
This man always has a way of making the atmosphere ambiguous in an instant.
She picked up the small fork, scooped a spoonful of cake, and brought it to his lips with a hint of coquettishness in her eyes.
Chi Wenyan held the cake in his mouth, but his deep eyes were always fixed on her, as if she was the most delicious dessert.
"Very sweet." He swallowed the cream in his mouth and licked the corner of his lips meaningfully, "But you are still sweeter."
The early morning sunlight shines through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting mottled shadows on the smooth floor.
The air still seemed to be filled with the sweet aroma of last night's cake, interwoven with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee, creating a warm and lazy picture.
Chi Wenyan sat across from the dining table, wearing a neatly pressed shirt, but without any of the aloofness and coldness he usually displayed at the company.
His eyes were glued to Ji Wan, watching her sip the milk, with a light milk stain on her lips, and her eyes were as dark as the sea at midnight.
The tranquility was broken by a sudden ring of the doorbell.
Ji Wan put down the cup and frowned slightly. Chi Wenyan's brows also furrowed, showing obvious displeasure at the interruption of this uninvited guest.
As soon as the door opened, Feng Lou, dressed in a suit, was standing outside. His expression was professional, but after scanning Ji Wan, he glanced subtly at Chi Wenyan in the room.
"Mr. Ji, good morning." He nodded. "Let me report on the next phase of the promotion plan for the 'Companion Star' project."
"Come in and talk." Ji Wan stepped aside to let him in, his voice returning to his usual cold, aloof tone as a CEO. The soft, gentle woman in front of Chi Wenyan instantly disappeared, replaced by the decisive and ruthless CEO Ji.
Feng Lou sat down on the sofa in the living room and began to report the project's progress and market feedback in a clear and coherent manner. Ji Wan listened attentively, occasionally asking a few pointed questions.
Chi Wenyan did not come over. He was still sitting at the dining table, eating breakfast slowly and leisurely, like a lion guarding his territory. Although he seemed lazy, he actually exuded a strong presence, and his eyes were always fixed on the movements in the living room.
After finishing his report, Feng Lou showed no intention of leaving immediately. He paused in organizing the documents and adopted a more familiar, even slightly assertive, tone.
"By the way, Mr. Ji, I just got the news that Mr. Chi was discharged from the hospital this morning." He looked up at Ji Wan, his eyes as if saying that this was something they both needed to be concerned about. "Do you think we should get ready and go over there?"
The air in the living room froze instantly.
The last trace of politeness on Ji Wan's face disappeared, replaced by a layer of biting frost. She slowly raised her eyes, and her gaze shot towards Feng Lou like a sharp blade.
"Mr. Feng," her voice was soft, yet it carried a sense of pressure. "Who are you in to inform me of this?"
Feng Lou was stunned by her sudden change of attitude and subconsciously explained: "I... I just feel that as the daughter-in-law of the Chi family, in this kind of situation..."
"Chi family's daughter-in-law?" Ji Wan sneered lightly, without a trace of warmth in his laughter.
She stood up. Although she was much shorter than him, her aura instantly crushed him.
"Feng Lou, let me remind you that we are a business partnership. Between you and me, we only discuss projects and interests. Since when did my family affairs become part of our cooperation?"
Every word she spoke was like an icy bullet, hitting Feng Lou's face precisely.
His face instantly became stiff: "Boss Ji, that's not what I meant. I just meant well..."
"I appreciate your kindness."
