Chapter 15 In the evening, the food packed at noon could be used for a meal, but unfortunately, her room...
In the evening, she could eat the food she packed at noon. Unfortunately, there was no microwave in her room, only an induction cooker. So she had to go out and run downstairs to the convenience store to borrow a microwave.
This convenience store has a microwave oven simply because so many people in this neighborhood come here to buy instant noodles and fast food. Buying a microwave oven makes things convenient for everyone.
Moreover, the boss is quite generous; you can use whatever you want.
He Zhao came over to ask to borrow it, but the boss just told her to go by herself. After heating up her dinner, she ate it and then started playing games, waiting to start work that evening.
In the past, every day when He Zhao was about to start work, he would dawdle and procrastinate as long as he could, his face showing no sign of joy. But today was completely different. It seemed that just thinking about Qiao Yanyu's words to him when he closed up shop this morning, "See you tonight," filled He Zhao with energy.
The system clearly required her to be at her stall by 10 a.m. every day, but He Zhao always delayed leaving until 10. Today was different; she was off on her electric scooter before 10 a.m. She wore a newly bought scarf and wrapped herself tightly in her electric scooter helmet. The cold wind brushed against her face, but she didn't feel cold at all; even her heart felt warm.
Under these circumstances, He Zhao couldn't help but hum a song.
"We ordinary people are truly happy today!"
The system, however, didn't quite understand: [Host, do humans hum songs when they're happy?]
He Zhao could guess that the system asked this question because its other hosts had done the same thing. Instead of criticizing the system, He Zhao answered it directly: "Yes, when you feel happy, you can't help but hum something, right? A tuneless song, something you just made up, or a song you've heard before that you just hum to express your feelings."
"However, some people are more reserved. When they are happy, they will only secretly laugh to themselves. These people are too 'closet perverts'."
As He Zhao spoke, they arrived at the second streetlight at the park entrance. Under the adjacent streetlight, someone else had already arrived; Qiao Yanyu's motorcycle was parked there. Qiao Yanyu leaned against the motorcycle, and seeing He Zhao approaching, she straightened up: "You're here?"
Upon hearing this, He Zhao smiled and stopped humming: "I'm here!"
The system thought that even someone who wasn't reserved wouldn't hum a song every time they felt happy. Look at the host, her face was practically beaming with joy, but she wasn't humming a song. She simply stared at Qiao Yanyu with her eyes, her joy shining directly into his eyes.
He Zhao pushed the food cart to the location and then began his street vending career.
It was late at night, and the park was secluded; no one else was there except for the two of them.
He Zhao deftly unfolded the food cart. Although she was lazy and didn't want to work, she would still do it when it was time to work. Qiao Yanyu wanted to help, but just like yesterday when they were packing up, He Zhao refused.
After she finished packing up her stall and getting ready to set up, she called Qiao Yanyu over to sit with her and asked her in a low voice, "Have you eaten dinner? Did you get any sleep when you got home today?"
When faced with this question, Qiao Yanyu only answered the first one: "I've already eaten."
But the second question was avoided.
He Zhao understood; that meant he hadn't slept much at all. Qiao Yanyu was a very conscientious and responsible person. Such a person generally wouldn't lie, especially not about trivial matters. So even though she knew He Zhao might worry, she still didn't lie to him.
"You can't just not rest, what if you suddenly die one day?"
"..." Qiao Yanyu looked a little embarrassed, but she still explained, "I have rested, and a little rest is enough, it's okay."
"I can't rest easy with you like this, Sister Qiao. If you really die suddenly, I'll have no one to protect me."
"No, even if I were to die in the line of duty, the bureau would assign someone else to protect you."
Qiao Yanyu is sometimes too straightforward and doesn't understand the hidden meaning in He Zhao's words at all. She choked up for a moment, not knowing what to say to Qiao Yanyu, and just sullenly got angry. She's quite expressive when she's angry.
As a pampered rich girl who was spoiled since childhood, He Zhao was not the type to keep her anger to herself and then smile and comfort others when asked, saying, "No, I'm not angry."
When she gets angry, she does the corresponding thing. He Zhao crossed his legs, rested his elbows on his thighs, propped his chin up, and awkwardly twisted his body to the side, pointing half of the back of his head at Qiao Yanyu.
This posture clearly says: I'm angry, you need to coax me.
Qiao Yanyu hesitated for a moment. She hadn't really interacted with someone like He Zhao much. At work, she was always very professional and, due to her personality, she was usually alone. So, she didn't really know how to coax a "young girl."
But she also knew that He Zhao was angry because she cared about her. If she didn't care about herself, why would she care whether others had rested, how long they had rested, or whether they were tired?
So Qiao Yanyu chose to apologize first: "I'm sorry."
He Zhao is actually quite easy to coax. She wasn't usually like that, but she's even easier to appease than usual when it comes to Qiao Yanyu. When He Zhao heard Qiao Yanyu apologize, her ears twitched, and she even leaned slightly closer to Qiao Yanyu, but her words still weren't without their sharp edge:
“It’s not my body, what does it have to do with me that you’re staying up all day? If you ruin your health, if your kidneys or stomach are damaged, you’ll have to suffer the consequences yourself. If I say something, you’ll think I’m meddling and you’ll be unhappy.”
When facing Qiao Yanyu, He Zhao even restrained his cursing compared to usual. Qiao Yanyu could also sense the concern in her words, and a smile appeared on her face: "I know."
After that, Qiao Yanyu added, "I want to lie down and sleep for a while."
He Zhao paused for a moment before nodding, "Okay, you go to sleep. I'll call you if I need anything."
Qiao Yanyu fell asleep, but not long after, Gosinian arrived. It seemed to be in even better shape than yesterday, hopping and skipping along, its tattered clothes and skin bouncing with each step. It would have been adorable to do this while it was alive, but now that it was dead, it was a little frightening.
He Zhao's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly regained her composure. She looked at Ge Sinian and made a "shh" gesture, which Ge Sinian didn't understand and then "shh"ed back. Only when she saw Qiao Yanyu sleeping next to He Zhao did she nod to indicate that she understood.
It sat down in front of the food cart and whispered, "She's a person, a good person. Why is she asleep?"
"She's been a bit busy and tired these past few days, so she's just resting for a bit."
Upon hearing this, a hint of guilt flashed across Gossian's face: "Was she exhausted from helping me look for people all this time?"
That's definitely part of the reason, but there's certainly other work to do as well. He Zhao said, "Let's do half and half. Are you going to eat?"
"I'll eat it."
Neither Gossian nor He Zhao intended to wake Qiao Yanyu, but He Zhao knew that Qiao Yanyu definitely wanted Gossian to talk some more, so she decided to wake Qiao Yanyu up after Gossian finished eating.
He Zhao served Gosinian a bowl of white rice and, while she ate, whispered to her, "I went to eat osmanthus rice cake today."
Gossian's eyes lit up, and he stopped eating, instead asking He Zhao, "How is it? Isn't it delicious?"
"Not bad, sweet and delicious."
Upon receiving He Zhao's approval, a smile instantly appeared on Gosinian's face. He Zhao chatted with Gosinian as casually as if he were talking to an online friend. In He Zhao's eyes, the strangely-looking Gosinian was simply wearing a rather unusual, horror-themed game outfit.
It might even be a collector's item that sells for a particularly high price, or even the kind that could be given away in a lucky draw.
"It was too sweet because I ate too much. I ate a whole plate, and there were six of them."
Hearing He Zhao say this, Gossian disagreed: "You won't feel tired of good food. Look at me, I can eat twenty bowls in one go here."
He Zhao rolled his eyes: "That's because you're a ghost, so you don't need to be full. When I eat white rice here, I can only manage two bowls at most."
"Well, my mom makes it, and I love it too. I can eat as much as I want without getting tired of it. It really depends on how well the person makes it."
That's not wrong.
Their conversations were always this kind of pointless chatter, like two close friends catching up. He Zhao would even say that he encountered a terrible player in the game, losing even his promotion matches. Gossian, who must have enjoyed the game before his death, actually claimed it was He Zhao's own fault for being bad at it.
He Zhao was so angry that he almost couldn't speak, and rolled his eyes at Ge Sinian several times.
He Zhao was much more relaxed and able to act like a friend when she was with Gossian than she was with Qiao Yanyu. Perhaps this was because she harbored ill intentions towards Qiao Yanyu and had something on her mind, which made her act reserved and somewhat pretentious towards him.
The two chatted for a while, and Gossian also took the time to finish five bowls of rice. Just then, Qiao Yanyu next to him made a small sound, turned her head, and leaned against the other side to continue sleeping.
The moment Qiao Yanyu moved, He Zhao and Ge Sinian both fell silent. Ge Sinian even looked at He Zhao, afraid she might make a sound. Only when Qiao Yanyu lowered her head again and continued sleeping did the two breathe a sigh of relief.
After that, the two of them looked at each other.
"That scared me to death! I thought the person was about to wake up."
"If you don't speak, Sister Qiao won't wake up. She's sleeping soundly, isn't she?"
