Chapter 18 Hearing Qiao Yanyu's answer, He Zhao was finally satisfied. She actually...
He Zhao was satisfied with Qiao Yanyu's answer.
She actually had impure feelings for Qiao Yanyu. If possible, she would prefer to sleep with Qiao Yanyu when she rested. Of course, it was just about sleeping; she simply wanted to be close to Qiao Yanyu and had no impure thoughts about anything inappropriate for children.
Hmm, that would be a bit sleazy.
Qiao Yanyu drove He Zhao all the way to an old residential area before stopping. This old residential area looked to be ten or twenty years old, with very outdated facilities and the roads inside were full of parked cars. Driving in such a residential area was quite a skill.
Fortunately, Qiao Yanyu was riding a motorcycle, so it was easy for her to maneuver left and right and dart out of the side road.
Before long, Qiao Yanyu stopped in front of a building that looked charred black from the fire. Perhaps because it was a weekday, there were few people in the neighborhood, and no one saw He Zhao and Qiao Yanyu. The two got out of the car and walked into the charred building, and no one noticed them.
Standing in front of the stairwell, He Zhao could really feel the ghostly atmosphere.
The apartment building was blackened by the fire, and given that it's an old building, the interior was already dark. The yellow "No Entry" signs surrounding it further amplified the feeling of "no one is allowed in." Adding to the gloom, it was a cloudy and cold day, and as I approached the door, gusts of wind felt like they were piercing my neck.
That's really scary.
He Zhao unconsciously tugged at Qiao Yanyu's clothes. Qiao Yanyu glanced back but didn't seem to care, continuing to walk inside. He Zhao followed closely behind, afraid of accidentally getting separated from her.
Once inside the building, I discovered that the stairwell wasn't as dark as I'd imagined. The floor and steps were covered in a layer of whitish-gray ash. Looking up, I saw that even the walls above were mottled from the fire.
"Does Gossian live here?"
His voice echoed throughout the entire building, occasionally sending down bits of ash that were choking and made people feel uncomfortable. He Zhao covered his mouth and nose, not wanting to smell the odor inside.
Qiao Yanyu said, "Why don't you wait for me outside? The environment inside is really bad, and there's a lingering odor that's harmful to the human body."
"No, I want to go with you."
He Zhao was stubborn and wouldn't listen to reason. Moreover, when he said this, he gripped Qiao Yanyu's clothes even tighter. Qiao Yanyu had no choice but to say to He Zhao, "Then stay close to me and don't leave me. Although the system says you won't be affected by the Yin energy, there's a lot of Yin energy here. If the system can't withstand it, you'll be in danger."
The system couldn't stand such words and immediately refuted them in He Zhao's mind: [Qiao Yanyu is seriously underestimating the system. I am a legitimate system under the Time and Space Administration. If I say the host won't be affected by Yin energy, then I won't!]
He Zhao rolled her eyes; she still trusted Qiao Yanyu more. After all, the system could only guarantee that she wouldn't be affected by the yin energy, but it couldn't guarantee that the ghost wouldn't attack her.
In comparison, Qiao Yanyu makes people feel safer.
He Zhao followed closely behind Qiao Yanyu, feeling a sense of danger as they walked. After all, the building was old and had been damaged by fire; she was genuinely afraid that everything under her feet was dangerous. However, under Qiao Yanyu's protection, they successfully reached the fourth floor.
Standing in front of room 401, Qiao Yanyu explained briefly: "Actually, most ghosts don't leave the place where they died; they have an obsession with this place. Ghosts become earthbound spirits, and they are strongest in this place. However, the more powerful ghosts can break free from the restrictions of their location and wander around."
"There's something I've always found quite incredible: many little ghosts leave the place where they died and come to eat at your place."
Without hesitation, He Zhao shifted the blame to the system: "It must have been the system that did it. It claims to be a legitimate system from the Time and Space Administration Bureau, but who knows how many tricks it has up its sleeve."
[...] The system fell silent: No, it just told He Zhao something, how could He Zhao sell it out so easily?
It never wants to find a host like He Zhao again. There's no one like him. Other hosts are extremely careful after transmigrating, keeping their identities as visitors from another world and those with systems a closely guarded secret, for fear of being treated as an anomaly and dissected and studied by research institutions in that other world.
He Zhao, on the other hand, made a clean slate the moment he saw the officials, without any attempt to hide the fact that he was a time traveler.
To say that He Zhao is brainless doesn't seem to be the case; in fact, she gained a bodyguard.
Qiao Yanyu raised her hand and knocked on the door. Actually, calling it a door wasn't quite right. The door was made of wood, and being from an old neighborhood, its quality was questionable. It had warped from the fire and could no longer hang loosely on the door, looking like it was about to collapse.
She knocked twice, and He Zhao was afraid the door would give way and fall off the frame with a thud.
Fortunately, the main gate is still intact.
After Qiao Yanyu knocked twice, Gosinian's voice came from inside the door. But for some reason, Gosinian's voice sounded more ethereal and ghostly than it had been in front of the scalper's stall.
"Coming, coming, come in."
The door slowly opened, creaking and groaning. The door opening inwards seemed like a silent invitation, but one that inevitably sent chills down one's spine.
As the door swung open, the figure inside became clearer. He Zhao didn't know how to describe it, but Gossian was now at a level that would give her nightmares. Qiao Yanyu also noticed that something was wrong with Gossian; she shifted her feet slightly, shielding He Zhao behind her.
"What's wrong? Come in quickly!"
He Zhao took a deep breath, placed his hand on Qiao Yanyu's back, and silently conveyed his plans. Qiao Yanyu did not hesitate; she lifted her foot and went into the house.
After taking that step, the entire house changed. It was no longer a dark, menacing abyss that seemed to devour passersby, but rather resembled an ordinary residence. Gossian stood inside, and at that moment, the house was filled with sunlight. Yet, looking at it, there was a strange sense of incongruity.
He Zhao quickly discovered the source of the unease: it was a cloudy day, a very cloudy day, where would the sunlight be so intense? Although He Zhao didn't understand how Gossian had done it, it was enough to show that ghosts were indeed a very dangerous and terrifying existence.
Gossian, however, smiled and invited the two to sit down.
He Zhao, who was quite naive about the matter, was actually prepared to sit for a while as Ge Sinian suggested, but Qiao Yanyu stopped him: "No need, let's take you there quickly. If we wait until the sun goes down, even with the props, your yin energy might have a negative impact on ordinary people."
Since Qiao Yanyu had already said that, Gossian didn't say anything more, he just nodded to Qiao Yanyu.
Qiao Yanyu took a small message in a bottle out of her pocket. He Zhao had actually sensed it when she was on the motorcycle, since her hand had been in Qiao Yanyu's pocket the whole time, but she hadn't expected that the small bottle was actually a prop that Qiao Yanyu had borrowed.
“Gossian, don’t resist, relax, and then you can enter this bottle. Inside the bottle, you can see the outside world. I’m sorry, I can’t let you actually meet them.”
Gossian quickly waved his hand: "No need to apologize, you've done very well, I should be the one thanking you."
Next, just as Qiao Yanyu had instructed, Gossian offered no resistance and was sucked into the transparent glass bottle. He Zhao leaned closer to take a look and discovered that inside the glass bottle was a very miniature Gossian.
He Zhao's hands were itching, and she wanted to reach out and touch it again, but she refrained from doing so.
Qiao Yanyu temporarily covered the bottle with a talisman. After that, the room, which was originally bright and full of sunlight and a sense of incongruity, immediately shed its disguise and returned to its original state.
This was a house completely destroyed by fire, with blackened and mottled marks on the walls and white-gray ash on the floor. The sofa where Gossian had once entertained them was now just a few pieces of wood burned away.
He Zhao glanced at it and sighed with relief that he hadn't sat on it, otherwise, he would have been ruined by sitting on a pile of dust.
With a sense of relief at surviving the ordeal, He Zhao followed Qiao Yanyu out the door. They got back on Qiao Yanyu's motorcycle, and she twisted the throttle, setting off with He Zhao and the glass bottle containing Gossian. They didn't go directly to the hospital, but instead went to another neighborhood first.
Qiao Yanyu took two work IDs out of her bag, went to a nearby supermarket to buy some milk, and then tossed the glass bottle to He Zhao. At that moment, He Zhao was still looking at the work IDs, and he almost missed catching the glass bottle when it was thrown.
She held it with both hands to prevent the glass bottle containing the Gossian from falling to the ground.
"Let's go. This family suffered the least damage initially. They even had insurance and received two million in compensation, which allowed them to buy a new house." Qiao Yanyu briefly explained the situation, and then led He Zhao to the family's home.
She was carrying two milk cartons in one hand. He Zhao wanted to help her carry them, but Qiao Yanyu avoided him, saying, "It's okay, they're not heavy."
This family is quite cautious; instead of opening the door directly, they asked through the smart doorbell, "Who is it?"
Qiao Yanyu briefly explained, "Hello, we are community workers. This is my work ID." She held the ID around her neck closer to the camera, and continued after the other side could see it clearly, "Our superiors know that your family was a victim of the 715 fire. It's almost the end of the year, so we've come to express our condolences on behalf of the community."
Qiao Yanyu delivered her speech very smoothly, clearly she's used to saying this a lot.
