Chapter 55 Suppressing the Rebellion
I quickly went back to my room to pack my things, then grabbed the dog and headed out of the city.
When we arrived at the city gate, we found that there wasn't a single pedestrian in sight, and the surroundings were eerily quiet.
In broad daylight, I tiptoed out of the city gate with my dog on my leash.
"Where does this young lady intend to go?" A voice suddenly came from behind me, and then a gleaming broadsword was held horizontally in front of me.
There was a rustling sound in his ear, and Che Zhou said, "Look."
I forced myself to look up, then opened my mouth wide and stared blankly at my portrait. It was so lifelike and vivid that even the tiny cinnabar mole on my left earlobe was included.
“It was drawn by the Prime Minister himself. Do you think I could mistake it?” Che Zhou looked at me, clasped his hands and said, “The Prime Minister has already sent this portrait to all the prefectures. Whoever finds Miss Pei will be richly rewarded. Even if the girl leaves Xuzhou City, she will still be sent to the Prime Minister.”
My lips twitched a few times, and I gritted my teeth inwardly. Cao Cao, you win!
"Protect Miss Pei well!" Che Zhou ordered, turning around, then looked at me. "Miss Pei, I have military duties to attend to, so please bear with me for now."
Several guards came forward and led me to the city tower to the side.
The dog stirred slightly, and I quickly gripped his hand to keep him from causing trouble.
“Sister…” Gou’er frowned as he looked at me.
I shook my head and looked at the guards standing outside the door.
"May I ask what brings the general here?" I asked tentatively as I stepped forward.
The guard stood at the door, like a pillar, without uttering a sound.
I gritted my teeth and sat back down in my original seat.
There was no movement at the city gate, and the sky gradually darkened.
Meanwhile, Che Zhou didn't forget to have someone bring me food, and the dishes were quite exquisite, so he probably didn't dare to neglect me.
As night fell, the area around the city gate remained quiet.
Around midnight, a commotion suddenly broke out outside the city gate.
"I am Zhang Wenyuan from Prime Minister Cao's camp! Please open the city gate!" A troop of soldiers was calling for the gate from the city wall.
I stood atop the city wall, gazing at the soldiers below. In the darkness of night, I couldn't make out who they were.
A short while later, Che Zhou also climbed up the city wall. After hesitating for a long time, he ordered his men to shout, "It's getting late, and the city gates are locked. It's not too late to enter the city tomorrow!"
"Liu Bei's troops are still nearby. General, please open the city gates immediately! If there are any casualties, I'm afraid you will have a hard time explaining to the Prime Minister!" the messenger shouted.
Che Zhou paced back and forth several times, still hesitant.
"Open the gate quickly!" Shouts rang out from outside the city gate.
Che Zhou gritted his teeth, turned around and ordered, "Protect Miss Pei well!" After speaking, he went down from the city tower and led a thousand soldiers out of the city to welcome her.
I stood up and looked down at the bustling scene below, where everyone was holding torches and had opened the city gates wide.
"Wasn't it supposed to be an ambush on Liu Bei? Why did the Prime Minister send Lord Zhang instead?" Someone whispered in confusion nearby.
Extremely curious, I stepped closer and asked, "What happened?"
"His Majesty dispatched troops to order Liu Bei to intercept the traitor Yuan Shu. Now that Yuan Shu has been eliminated, Liu Bei has secretly left troops stationed in Xuzhou, deceiving the emperor. Today, Liu Bei went out of the city to recruit people. We are ordered by the Prime Minister to deploy our troops and lie in ambush by the city. We will wait for Liu Bei to return to the city and then kill him under the city walls."
I sat down and pondered to myself, realizing that all this mobilization was for the purpose of killing Liu Bei.
He felt much more relaxed. How could Liu Bei be a short-lived man? Judging from the scene downstairs, it was clear that Liu Bei was pretending to be weak while actually being strong, setting a trap for Che Zhou to fall into.
I brushed the dust off my skirt and sat down calmly.
"Sister, should we take advantage of the chaos and leave?" Gou'er whispered to me.
I winked at him approvingly. We can just sit back and wait for Liu Bei to return to the city, annihilate Che Zhou, and then we can make a quick getaway!
Sit on the mountain and watch the tigers fight.
"Where is Wen Yuan?" Che Zhou spurred his horse onto the suspension bridge and shouted.
Where is Wen Yuan?
Amidst the firelight, a man carrying a Green Dragon Crescent Blade rode straight up from the other end of the suspension bridge, his cold and stern face carrying a murderous intent.
"Guan Yu?!" Che Zhou was shocked when he saw who it was and immediately turned his horse to turn back.
Guan Yu drew his sword and stepped forward, and in just a few rounds, he beheaded Che Zhou.
I watched as he raised his knife and severed Che Zhou's head in one stroke, dark blood gushing from the severed neck...
I stood atop the high city tower, looking down at the lives below, as insignificant as ants, vanishing in an instant. The smell of blood and fire filled the air, creating a pungent and strange odor.
"The rebels have been eliminated, those who surrender will be pardoned!" Holding up the severed head, Guan Yu coldly shouted.
The guards who were watching over him were already in a daze and had disappeared without a trace.
"Doggy, let's go." I said softly, my voice calm without a tremor.
The dog gripped my hand slightly tighter, and I felt a touch of warmth in my icy palm.
A slight smile appeared on my pale lips, and I realized that I couldn't move an inch.
"Sister, it's alright now." Holding my hand, Gou'er led me step by step down the city wall.
Carefully stepping over the corpses scattered on the ground, we fled from the crowd.
"Miss Pei." A gentle voice suddenly came from behind, "Long time no see."
I turned around and looked into a pair of ordinary yet imposing eyes.
The ground was littered with mutilated corpses and thick blood, but the man stood among the wreckage with his hands behind his back, strolling leisurely and calmly, as if he were just taking a walk in his own backyard.
"Long time no see, Lord Liu," I greeted him with a smile.
