Chapter 98 Leaving Danyang
The people of Danyang had been waiting for a long time, eagerly anticipating the news that the manager of Chunfeng Deyilou had become a divorced woman while heavily pregnant. However, they had not heard anything about the manager jumping off a building, drowning herself, hanging herself, or taking poison, and were greatly disappointed.
Finally, perseverance pays off (heh, this phrase can also be used here...), and on this day, something happened.
"Have you heard? The manager of Chunfeng Deyilou is leaving."
"Oh? Why is the restaurant doing so well?"
"Heartbroken, she must not want to see that heartless man again."
"Sigh, I knew it. What woman doesn't react at all when she's dumped... See?"
Rumors stop with the wise.
So, after a few twitches at the corner of my mouth, I decided to completely ignore it.
The next morning, I instructed the servants to prepare the carriage, and then asked Xiao Tao to help pack my belongings. I temporarily entrusted the restaurant to Yan Zhi to manage, and after explaining all the big and small chores, I, heavily pregnant and carrying a heavy bundle, accompanied Baozi to find his father.
"Madam Pei, when will you be back?"
"Madam Pei, the soup and tonic have been prepared and placed in the carriage. Remember to drink them."
“Madam Pei…we will take good care of the restaurant. Please come back soon.”
"Madam Pei..."
The girls in the building stood at the entrance of the restaurant, their eyes red, staging a deeply moving farewell scene.
"Alright, alright, I'll be right back, and I'll bring you gifts." He reached out and lightly pinched Zi Yan's rosy cheek, earning her an angry glare; her beautiful eyes were already as red as a rabbit's.
Qiaolan, who was standing to the side, had already started sobbing.
“Madam Pei, let Xiao Tao come along. Xiao Tao is used to serving you…” Xiao Tao stepped forward and gently took my hand. “Besides, Madam is pregnant. What will happen if no one takes care of you along the way…”
I smiled with my eyes narrowed, feeling a warm glow inside.
"Relax, who am I? I'm Baozi's mom!" I patted my chest and assured her with a smile.
As I spoke, I looked around but didn't see Zhao'er. I hadn't seen him since he said he was leaving for a while yesterday. Could he be having another tiff?
But would he compromise so easily? I doubt it.
"Rouge, have you seen Zhao'er?" I asked, still feeling uneasy.
“Young Master? I don’t know. I haven’t seen him since yesterday.” Rouge shook her head.
"Well, I'll leave the restaurant to you. When you see Zhao'er, please tell him I'll be right back." I turned and climbed into the carriage, then thought for a moment and added.
The carriage drove out of Danyang City. I sat comfortably in the carriage, and Qiaolan and the others had made soft cushions under the seats, which made it very comfortable.
Just as I was resting with my eyes closed, the car suddenly stopped.
"What's wrong, Uncle Li?" Uncle Li, the coachman, was a handyman at Chunfeng Deyilou. He was a skilled driver and a kind and honest man, which is why I had troubled him to take me out of Danyang this time.
“Madam Pei, young master…” Uncle Li’s hesitant voice rang out from outside the carriage.
I paused for a moment, then lifted the curtain with one hand.
The sky was ablaze with the colors of dawn. A young man stood before a carriage, his moon-white robe fluttering in the wind. He pursed his lips slightly, looked at me, and remained silent.
"How long have you been waiting?"
He remained standing, his lips pursed, saying nothing.
"Did you come last night?" I raised an eyebrow and asked again, noticing the glistening dewdrops on his hair.
"Mmm," he responded softly.
I was both annoyed and amused. I was wondering why he was being so agreeable this time, but it turned out he had been lying in wait all along.
"Aren't you getting in the car?" I said, seeing him standing there with a look of grim determination on his face.
"Huh?" He opened his beautiful eyes wide and looked at me.
"Hey what? Didn't you want to come along?" I waved and saw him obediently walk to my side. I raised my hand and lightly flicked his forehead in an annoyed tone.
Zhao'er rubbed her head, then laughed and climbed onto the carriage.
The car bumped along again. I glanced at Zhao'er, then wiped the dew from his brow with my sleeve. "If you want to talk, just go together. Why are you waiting here like an idiot?"
Zhao'er lowered her head, "I'm afraid my sister won't take me."
"So you simply ran out of Danyang City overnight?" After thinking for a moment, I raised my hand and tapped his head again. How far is it from Danyang to here! He actually walked all night, just because he was afraid I wouldn't take him with me.
Zhao'er obediently accepted the tap, only smiling, "Sister, next time Zhao'er wants to follow you, all I have to do is tell you, right?"
"Hmm." I nodded without thinking, then glared at him. This cunning little devil actually schemed against me. But seeing the smile on his face as if he had found gold for free, I had no choice but to give up. Anyway, women and villains are always the hardest to deal with. Hehe, I'm not exactly a gentleman of my word either. Someone chuckled shamelessly.
Traveling westward along the Yellow River for several days, we gradually came to see traces of war; amidst the broken walls and ruins, the remnants of war were faintly visible.
They rode in the carriage the whole way, with Zhao'er taking care of everything. Although they were traveling, it wasn't tiring.
After traveling for several days, the signs of war became increasingly pronounced. Sitting in the carriage, I suddenly smelled the stench of blood, and my stomach churned. I lifted the curtain and vomited.
After vomiting until my stomach was empty, I finally felt much better. Just as I was about to look up, a pair of cool hands suddenly covered my eyes.
"Zhao'er?" Feeling a sudden darkness before my eyes, I instinctively tried to push his hand away.
"Don't look," Zhao'er's voice rang in my ears.
As I was wondering, I suddenly heard the sound of horses' hooves.
Who is it?
"Who goes there?!" A loud shout came from afar.
I quickly pulled Zhao'er's hand away. My eyes were slightly unaccustomed to the sight. I blinked, but before I could even see who it was, my stomach started churning again. The surroundings were a mess, with bloodstains, mutilated corpses, and abandoned chariots...
The scene was one of devastation.
This is the real ancient battlefield, where people died on the battlefield... it was so cruel.
When I felt Zhao'er gently stroking my back, I realized that he had covered my eyes earlier because he didn't want me to see this scene.
"Who goes there?!" The voice grew louder, carrying a chilling and menacing tone.
"Just passing by! Just passing by! We're just ordinary people!" I quickly snapped out of my daze and loudly declared my innocence. I didn't want to become a lost soul on this ancient battlefield.
"What brings you here?!" A general, holding a long sword upside down, rode forward on horseback.
"Zhao'er, Zhao'er, what do those words say on that flag?" I noticed a large flag being held behind the other person, but unfortunately, the characters of this era were different; it recognized me, but I didn't. If it were Cao Cao's troops, things would be much easier. We could find out if their prime minister was alright, and then retreat at our leisure.
Zhao'er glanced at it, then uttered a single word in a low voice: "Yuan".
OMG! Cao Cao's archenemy!
