Chapter 15 A Big Mistake
The dog, who had been standing silently to the side staring at its toes, suddenly raised its hand, snatched the money pouch from Huifeng's hand, grabbed my hand, and walked out without looking back.
His hands were slightly cold, but his palms were damp with sweat. I didn't pull my hand away and let him lead me downstairs.
As we went downstairs, the fat old woman glared at us menacingly, but out of respect for Huifeng, she said nothing and let us out.
The dog walked very fast, but kept its head down and walked silently.
"Don't you really want to see her?" I asked, looking at his silent back.
He didn't answer, but instead turned around and stuffed the bag of money into my hand.
"If you don't acknowledge her, why take her money?" I sighed.
"Why not take it if it's free? Isn't your sister short of money?" He looked up at me and actually laughed.
I pinched his cheek and laughed, "Yeah, why not take it?" But looking at his smiling face, I felt a little uneasy.
When they returned to the pastry shop, the door was open, but Aman was nowhere to be seen.
I searched everywhere, but I couldn't find it.
"Doggy, you watch the shop, I'll go look for it." With that, I rushed out the door again.
What a mess! I can't even have a moment's rest.
"Grandma Wu, have you seen Aman?" Just as I stepped out, I bumped into the old lady who lived next door.
"Ah Man? Hehe, he helped me sell wheat at the market," the old woman said.
"What?" I was stunned.
Ah Man's identity is so dangerous; if he's recognized, it'll be disastrous. Also, he has amnesia; what if he forgets the way back? What if he's bullied? What if he's mistaken for a thief again?
All sorts of terrifying fantasies lunged at me, baring their fangs and claws; I never knew my imagination could be so vivid...
"That young man Aman is quite good, Miss Pei should really seize the opportunity..." The old woman grabbed my arm and nagged, "He should have come back a long time ago, why has he been gone for so long..."
I could only manage a forced laugh. Having finally managed to escape, I hurried off to the market.
There were people everywhere, and I was sweating profusely. My heart was in my throat; I just hoped nothing bad had happened to that guy.
As I walked, I saw a crowd gathered ahead.
"How pitiful."
"Yes, he was so young when he was hit and killed by a carriage."
"Sigh, who told him to risk his life for a jade pendant..."
Jade pendant? Did he die in the accident?
I suddenly stopped in my tracks, my mind went blank for a moment, then I snapped back to reality and gritted my teeth to squeeze into the crowd.
"Aman... Aman..." My throat tightened. I saw a pool of blood on the ground, and a man lay in it, his face mangled beyond recognition...
Ah Man...
“Aman…” I rushed to the body, choking back tears, “Aman… you were so foolish… the jade pendant was gone… why did you have to go and pick it up… I was wrong, I’ll never be a burden to you again… don’t die, Aman… Aman… I’ll never bully you again…”
"My husband... my husband..." A cry even more pitiful than mine pierced the sky.
I was stunned for a moment, then turned around and saw a plump woman lying on the corpse, wailing and crying so hard that the sky seemed to change color, a truly heartbreaking sight.
"My husband..." she cried out, her lung capacity was astonishing.
After a while, she stopped, turned her head, and looked at me.
"Who...are you?" I asked softly, looking at her tear-streaked face, sounding somewhat abrupt.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" The woman stood up, her eyebrows furrowed.
"Huh?" I shrank back and looked at the corpse on the ground. Its size... seemed a bit fatter than Aman's... and its height... seemed a bit shorter...
"You vixen! What do you have to do with my husband!" she said in a high-pitched voice, hands on her hips.
I covered my ears, feeling guilty.
"I knew that damned man had a woman outside! Today, heaven has finally opened its eyes and brought him retribution!" Gritting her teeth, the woman glared fiercely at the man on the ground, whose face had been run over by the carriage and was now unrecognizable. The heartbroken expression she had just shown had completely vanished.
Indeed... a woman's jealousy is the most terrifying thing.
While she was busy cursing and had no time to pay attention to me, I quickly turned around and quietly slipped away.
"Heaven has eyes!" Behind him, the woman's incessant cursing could still be heard.
I quickly quickened my pace.
But thinking about that man... he was truly wronged; he died while still being blamed for something he didn't do.
As the culprit, I felt extremely guilty, but I was relieved that Aman was alright.
After walking a few steps, I suddenly saw a very familiar figure... Cao Cao?
Looking up again, is that the Fengyue Tower?
What was Cao Cao doing in front of the brothel?
"Let me go... let me go..." Aman struggled.
"Wait, please, young master, come in and sit down..." A sweet, seductive voice swayed her to the bone as several women with bare shoulders dragged Ah Man along.
"No, no, Xiaoxiao will get angry." Aman shook his head desperately.
I chuckled; this guy is quite thoughtful.
"Who is Xiaoxiao? Your wife? Young master, are you perhaps afraid of your wife? Hehe... It's alright, it's alright, your wife won't know..." The women giggled and tugged at each other. (69)
"I...I have no money..." Aman said urgently, his face flushed.
"Why talk about such vulgar things... Young master is so handsome, we sisters would gladly pay him to be our servants..." The women's laughter grew louder and louder.
As she spoke, a red lipstick pressed against Aman's cheek.
"What... what are you doing, young lady..." Aman stared wide-eyed in shock.
"Oh dear, this young master is so joking. Of course I like you..." the woman said coyly, and then the group of women giggled.
Cao Cao was pushed and pulled from both sides, his clothes were even torn off, and a silver hairpin fell out of his arms.
"Oh, what's this?" A woman picked it up and smiled. "Is it a gift for me?"
"No, it's not for you!" Aman panicked and quickly reached out to snatch it back. "This is for Xiaoxiao."
All the women laughed. "Is Madam so beautiful that your young master is so interested in her?"
"Of course," Aman said, raising his head with obvious pride.
I couldn't help but laugh. This guy was really giving me face, not caring at all about my bullying and exploitation.
"Xiaoxiao?!" Turning around, seeing me standing there, Aman quickly broke free from the women and ran over.
"What are you doing here?" Thinking back to the terrifying moment just now, I deliberately put on a dark face and asked.
"I...I..." He lowered his head for a long time, then hurriedly showed me the silver hairpin in his hand as if it were a treasure.
"What?" I glanced at him sideways.
He raised his hand and inserted the silver hairpin into my hair.
"I bought it, it's a gift for you." He smiled at me, his white teeth shining through, a pure smile.
"Where did you get the money?" I glared at him.
He shrank his neck slightly, looking a little scared. "Grandma asked me to help her sell wheat, and Aunt Fu's family on East Street is building a house, so I went to help move things."
I sighed and looked down at his hands. They were hands that used to hold a sword, but now, because of the rough work, there were fine scratches on the back of his hands.
"You ran all the way here and haven't gone back yet, and this is what you're giving me?"
"Yes." He nodded obediently.
"Don't buy these useless things anymore," I said softly. "Also, don't wander off."
He nodded, looking somewhat aggrieved.
Seeing the red lipstick mark on his cheek, I laughed and reached out to wipe it away for him. "Also, thank you."
"Hmm!" He nodded, then shook his head and laughed.
"Has the old lady sold all her wheat?"
"Um."
"Let's go home then." I pulled him back.
"Okay." He nodded, smiling.
