Chapter 13 Specialties

Big Baby's eyes moved around, but he didn't look at Shen Lie.

Shen Lie sneered and patted his little butt, "Go ahead, don't eat all the lard by yourself, share some with your brothers and sisters."

The eldest boy ran out with the bowl in his arms and only answered after he ran out of the kitchen.

Shen Lie was not bluffing when he told Da Wa that, in order to welcome Ning Tang, he actually prepared a table of delicious food.

So when Ningtang was eating, she saw four dishes and one soup, including stir-fried pork, sweet and sour fish, duck with ginger and scallions, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and a pot of fish ball soup.

Ning Tang took a bowl of soup and handed it to Shen Lie, "Did you get your salary today?"

Shen Lie took the bowl and said, "No, we get paid on the 8th of every month. Today is the 15th, so it's still a little early for that."

"Then why cook so many dishes?" Ning Tang said.

Shen Lie was too embarrassed to say that he did it to welcome her, so he just laughed it off and said, "I was in a good mood, so I did a little more."

Ning Tang was happy, "Then I hope you will be in such a good mood every day."

It’s no wonder that Shen Lie is a big man but his cooking skills are really good. Every dish he makes is delicious and tasty.

Could it be that Shen Lie was the one who cooked for the Shen family in the past?

Ning Tang took a bite of the ginger duck and asked him tentatively, "Did you always cook in your family before?"

Shen Lie glanced at her and said, "Big Boy's mother is in poor health, so I was the one who did most of the housework."

No wonder, Ning Tang thought Shen Lie looked like he was very skilled at everything he did.

After several days, Ning Tang and Shen Lie got used to this distribution pattern.

Ning Tang cooks lunch and washes the dishes. Shen Lie comes back in the evening to cook and wash the dishes. They even wash their clothes separately, Ning Tang washes her own, and Shen Lie washes his and the three children's.

Two days later, Ning Tang finished her meal and was about to take a nap when she heard someone calling her outside the house, "Xiao Ning, are you home?"

Ning Tang stayed at home for a few days, taking care of her three children every day, or going to the market to deal with fishermen and vegetable vendors. For a moment, she really couldn't figure out who was calling her.

It didn't sound like Ning Xue's voice, and Ning Xue would never call her Xiao Ning.

Ning Tang trotted out of the house, opened the gate, and saw Mrs. Luo's friendly smiling face.

Mrs. Luo was still wearing the blue and white checkered cotton top she wore on the beach that day, with a small basket slung over her arm. "I took a walk here and came to see you. How are you? Are you getting used to it here?"

"Very good." Ning Tang wanted to welcome Sister Luo into the house, "Sister Luo, come in and talk."

Mrs. Luo waved her hand and declined, "I have something to do later, so I won't go in." She handed the small basket on her arm to Ning Tang, "These are vegetables I grew myself. There aren't many, but I'll give them to you to add some flavor."

"Sister Luo!" The voices of Da Wa, Er Niu and San Wa suddenly came from behind Ning Tang.

The three children crossed Ningtang and circled around Sister Luo, saying in unison, "Sister Luo, why didn't you come to see us these few days?" "That's right, we missed you so much, Sister Luo."

Mrs. Luo was surrounded by the three children, her mouth wide open with laughter. She patted the heads of the three children one by one, took out a bag of candy from her pocket and gave it to the three children, "Go over to the side and share the candy. I'll talk to your mother."

The eldest child took the candy and shook his head, "It's not mother, it's stepmother."

Mrs. Luo was stunned and looked at Ning Tang.

Ning Tang waved his hands, "It's okay, I told them to call me that."

Mrs. Luo didn't ask any more questions and changed the subject, "When Shen Lie went to your village, no one was at home, so I helped take care of Da Wa and the others for a few days, so the children are closer to me."

So that's what happened. When Shen Lie asked the guards to deliver the meal, Ning Tang was thinking that the guards left after delivering the meal. Shen Lie was really generous, leaving the three children alone at home. It turned out that he asked their political commissar's wife, Mrs. Luo, to take care of them. This made sense.

"Let's not talk about this anymore." Mrs. Luo stuffed the basket into Ning Tang's hand, "Take it."

Ning Tang didn't bother to be polite with Sister Luo and took the basket. "Then I'll give it to Sister Luo."

Mrs. Luo smiled contentedly and pointed to a two-story building not far away. "That's where I live. Come find me if you have any questions."

Ning Tang looked in the direction of her finger at Mrs. Luo's house, which was only four or five two-story buildings away from the Shen family. The two houses were very close, just a few steps away.

It seems that what Mrs. Luo said about taking a detour to her place and bringing her some food were all excuses. She came to see her specifically.

Sister Luo achieved her goal and prepared to leave. She waved to Da Wa, Er Niu and San Wa and said, "Sister-in-law, I'm leaving."

The three little kids had candies in their mouths, stuffing them full. "Goodbye, sister-in-law."

Ning Tang stopped Sister Luo and said, "Sister-in-law, wait for me."

Mrs. Luo didn't know why Ning Tang stopped her, but she still waited as she was told.

Ning Tang went into the house and searched for a while, then took out a bag of red dates. "Sister-in-law, this is a specialty I brought from the northwest. Take it home and eat it."

Mrs. Luo looked down at the dates. The dates Ningtang gave were all dried dates, and the portion was large, estimated to be around two kilograms.

Red dates are very precious, selling for 70 or 80 cents per pound, and they are in short supply on Hailang Island.

Hailang Island has no shortage of seafood, but it lacks dried goods from the mainland.

She quickly declined, "No, this thing is too expensive."

Ning Tang stuffed the red dates into Luo's wife's hands and said, "It's not expensive at all. When I first arrived, you gave me a bag of rattan pots, and then a basket of vegetables. All in all, you are still at a loss."

Not to mention the matter of giving food, just because Sister Luo has taken care of three children for several days, this bag of red dates should be given to her.

Mrs. Luo waved her hands repeatedly, "You say that, rattan pots can be picked up everywhere on the reef, and the vegetables are grown by me, they are not worth much."

Ning Tang gave the red dates to Sister Luo and crossed his arms, "Sister-in-law, please be polite to me. I won't accept this basket of vegetables either."

Mrs. Luo also saw that Ning Tang really wanted to give her the red dates, so she thought for a moment and said, "Okay, then don't be polite to me in the future. If you want to eat any vegetable, just come to my yard and pick it."

Seeing that Luo Saozi accepted it, Ning Tang said with a smile, "That's right, take the red dates back, they are great whether you use them to make soup or eat them dry."

These red dates are planted in the Ning family's yard. Every year when the dates are ripe, Ning Weiguo will bring Ning Weidang and Ningde to harvest the dates, and then Sun Aiju and Zhou Yin will dry the dates.

This time when they came to Hailang Island, Sun Aiju forced Ningtang to eat several big bags.

Ning Tang and Mrs. Luo stood at the gate of the yard and talked for a while about how to eat red dates. Then Mrs. Luo left excitedly with the red dates in her pocket.

Ning Tang watched Mrs. Luo go away before closing the door.

She didn't know that as soon as the gate was closed, a pair of eyes fell on the door.
