Chapter 106 First Day at Work

"Comrade Lu Wei, if you take back what you said, I can let it go." Tian Tian's face flushed. Her father was a worker, her mother was bedridden all year round, and her family was very poor, which made Tian Tian very proud.

"......I didn't say anything. You worked hard and I pay you. Forget it. I won't look for you anymore." Lu Wei didn't mean to humiliate Tian Tian. She just wanted to pay someone to do the work for her.

Li Jiawei glared at Lu Wei's back, "Tiantian, don't be angry. Let's not bother with her. This kind of person has a little princess's temper and should be dragged out and criticized! This is simply the style of "family"!"

After Lu Wei left, she happened to run into Wang Qiang washing clothes in front of the water tank in the yard. It was the shirt she had soiled. She had a good impression of Wang Qiang, so she walked over and squatted beside him. "Wang Qiang, can you help me carry my luggage in? It's really heavy."

Wang Qiang paused and said, "It's not easy for me to enter your room. There aren't many things. Comrade Lu Wei, you should take them in yourself."

After being rejected one after another, Lu Wei could no longer bring herself to ask for help. She moved the luggage one by one with red eyes. When she finished, Tian Tian and Li Jiawei had already lain down and fallen asleep, but her bed was not yet made.

Lu Wei had never done such a job before, so she had to wake Tian Tian up and ask her for help. Tian Tian was almost out of temper. Facing Lu Wei's tearful eyes, she got up without saying a word and made the bed. If she refused again, she and Li Jiawei would probably not be able to sleep tonight.

The next morning, several people were awakened by the crowing of chickens in the village. At around four o'clock, Qingshan Village had already become lively, with the crowing of chickens, the cawing of geese, and the barking of wild dogs, which made these young educated youth who had just arrived feel a little uncomfortable.

"It's so noisy." Li Jiawei muttered, turned over and fell asleep again.

Tian Tian quietly got up, put on her clothes, folded her quilt, and took her things to go outside to wash up. She was used to getting up early. Her mother was sick at home and her father was a worker in a brick factory. It was very hard for him to move and unload bricks every day. When he had time, he would secretly do some hard labor for others. In order to help share the burden of the family, Tian Tian usually did housework and took care of her mother besides going to school.

After cleaning the yard, Tian Tian went to the kitchen to light a fire. Their home was in an urban village, and they also used these things, so the operation was effortless. Chen Zhifang had already delivered their food rations yesterday, 45 kilograms per person per month, including cornmeal, sorghum flour and sweet potatoes. The only vegetables were radish and tofu.

Tian Tian made a few corn cakes, went back to the house to get out the pickles she had brought and cut them, then went to wake Li Jiawei and Tian Tian to get up.

Li Jiawei put on her clothes, stretched, rubbed her eyes and went out to wash up. She happened to meet Wang Qiang who had just got up. Li Jiawei blushed and realized that she was now an educated youth and there were male comrades living in the yard.

Wang Qiang pretended not to notice the other party's predicament and took the initiative to greet him with a smile: "Good morning, Comrade Li Jiawei!"

"Good morning, just call me Jiawei." Li Jiawei looked around the yard and said with some surprise, "Hey, this yard is quite clean. I remember when I came here last night, there were still some debris piled there."

"Someone must have gotten up early to clean it." Wang Qiang thought he was diligent enough. "I wonder who got up so early."

Tian Tian came out with a smile, "I cleaned up a bit. There are some baked pancakes in the kitchen. You can eat them after you wash up. Secretary Chen said yesterday that today is our first day of work, so we should not be late."

Li Jiawei took Tian Tian's arm and smiled, "Tiantian, you are so nice. Next time, remember to ask me to get up with you. I will do it with you!"

Tian Tian blushed, feeling a little shy about Li Jiawei's intimacy, but she liked this girl very much, "Okay, let's do it together from now on."

After the three of them finished their meal, the rest of them had not gotten up yet. Wang Qiang called them a few times, and the three male educated youth reluctantly got up. As for Lu Wei, Tian Tian didn't want to call them again after calling them once, because Lu Wei had a very bad temper when getting up.

When Wang Youtian rang the gong to start work, Li Jiawei and Tian Tian had to go and grab Lu Wei again. Lu Wei was completely different when she was angry than when she was crying. She would throw things at the slightest provocation.

Li Jiawei was not a good-tempered person either. She pulled Tian Tian away. When everyone in the yard had left, Lu Wei realized that she had been left behind.

She dressed slowly, brushed her teeth, washed her face, applied cold cream, and braided her hair neatly. Lu Wei went to the kitchen to look at the corn cakes and curled her lips in disgust. She had brought her own egg cakes, so she could just make do with a bite.

When Li Jiawei went out, there were no villagers outside. She didn't know the way and was getting anxious when she saw a boy of about twelve or thirteen coming out of a house not far away. "Hey! Kid! Take me to the fields. I don't know the way."

Shen Sui came back to get medicine for his grandfather. He thought he had it in his pocket when he went out in the morning. When he heard someone calling him, he subconsciously turned around and said, "Oh, okay, come with me."

Lu Wei looked at Shen Suizhi and thought he was quite good-looking, even better looking than the children in their Qicheng. "What's your name? Why don't you go to school? Isn't the middle school class in session?"

She heard that even in rural areas, boys in the family were allowed to go to school.

Shen Suizhi also wanted to go, but his grandfather said that it would be better not to cause trouble for the team leader and secretary. They had a bad background, and even if they went, it would be a problem if others found out. It would be better for him to take a small class with Fu Baoer at home. Anyway, his grandfather knew all the knowledge.

"Sister, you are a newly arrived educated youth, right?" Shen Suizhi decided to remind her, "My grandfather and I were sent down from the countryside and lived next door to you. According to the policy, we are not allowed to go to school."

Lu Wei was stunned. "Are you from the family or are you bad guys?"

Shen Suiyi didn't say anything. Lu Wei slowed down her pace. No matter what it was, she just had to keep her distance and draw a clear line. Her family was a glorious descendant of workers and should not have anything to do with such people.

Shen Suizhi didn't care about Lu Wei's behavior. He just took her to the field without saying a word. "It's right here. Just tell the team leader and the secretary."

Chen Zhifang guessed that someone must be late today, but he didn't expect it to be only Lu Wei. "It's you again, female comrade! It's almost lunchtime, and you're just here. I'll deduct a day's work points!"

Lu Wei thought, "Let it be." Her parents knew this would happen and had already given her enough money and food coupons. "So what should I do next?"

Without even looking up, Chen Zhifang pointed towards Tian Tian and Li Jiawei and said, "Go weed over there. Here are the gloves."

Lu Wei glanced at the blackened gloves with disgust, wondering who had worn them before: "Forget it, I don't need this."

Chen Zhifang took it back immediately. It’s up to you whether you want it or not. If you cry in pain later, don’t come to complain to him!
