Chapter 128 Farewell

"Dumplings on the bus, noodles when you get off," Zhao Li said, holding back tears as she handed two bowls of dumplings to her son. "Eat them all, don't leave any."

Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie's throats seemed to be choked by something. They ate the dumplings very slowly. Zhao Li's face became increasingly blurred in their eyes. A few tears fell into the bowl. They could no longer hold back. They put down the bowl of dumplings and knelt on the ground together: "Mother! Your son is unfilial!"

Zhao Li had been holding back her tears and reluctance all morning, and now all of them burst out, "My sons! Mother can't bear to leave you!"

Fu Tianyun squatted on the ground, not daring to look back at his wife and son. He was the head of the family, how could he cry so easily?

"Children, take good care of yourselves outside. Chengru, you are the older brother, so you should protect Chengjie. Your younger brother is not as steady as you, so you should give him more advice on everything, okay?" Zhao Li touched the faces of her two sons. This was her pride.

Chengru was choked with sobs and couldn't speak. He just kept nodding and said he would take good care of his brother.

When I went out, many fellow villagers had already gathered outside, all holding gifts as a token of their appreciation.

"Okay, Zhao Li, don't cry when your son goes out! Look at Chengru and Chengjie, wearing military uniforms and big red flowers, they look so energetic!"

"Zhao Li, your son has made great progress. You can't let him worry about you outside. Hurry up and wipe your tears. Don't let Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie worry about you."

Zhao Li quickly wiped her tears and stopped crying. "Okay, I won't cry anymore. It's a great thing for my son to join the army. I'm so happy!"

Fu Xiuzhi took out a bundle and said, "Here, I made this this morning. Eat it on the way."

"Thank you, aunt." With so much to offer, my aunt must have gotten up very early.

Fu Manshan and Jiang Fengxia didn't say anything else, but just smiled at their grandchildren, waved goodbye and told them to go without worry. Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie looked at their grandparents' healthy but still haggard faces, and felt very sad. When they were young, they were ignorant and made their grandparents unhappy, but the two old people still accepted them without any hesitation.

Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie looked at each other, knelt down in front of the two elders tacitly, and kowtowed three times without saying a word. They could not settle the grievances of the previous generation, so they could only try their best to make up for it.

Jiang Fengxia turned her back, not wanting to cry at this moment.

The farewell procession was very long and went all the way to the assembly point for the new recruits. They would get on the bus here and go to the train station together. Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie looked back and saw that their parents had a lot of white hair. Zhao Li leaned on Fu Tianyun and covered her mouth to prevent herself from crying.

Cheng Jie searched for Fu Baoer in the team. Fu Baoer took the initiative to stand up and walked in front of the two of them: "Brother, if you have anything to say, just say it."

"Little sister..." Cheng Jie forced a smile, "I can't hide anything from you..."

Fu Baoer rubbed Cheng Jie's big head like when he was a child: "Don't worry, I won't pick a fight with your mother unless she messes with me!"

Cheng Jie hugged Fu Baoer and said, "Thank you, little sister. I knew you were the most generous."

Last night, Chengru and Chengjie seriously warned Zhao Li and Fu Tianyun not to go near their grandparents for no reason and not to provoke Fu Baoer. As long as they behaved themselves, their lives would get better and better.

Considering that her son was going on a long journey, Zhao Li had no choice but to agree. She had suffered so much at the hands of Fu Baoer and was unwilling to get involved again.

Fu Baoer hugged Cheng Jie back tightly, then hugged Cheng Ru, "Be sure to keep the amulet safe."

As the car started, a group of new recruits waved to everyone. Fu Baoer was searching for the familiar figure, but his vision suddenly became blurred.

Zhao Li couldn't stop crying, leaning on Fu Tianyun, watching the car go away without blinking.

"Don't cry, the children are grown up, you can't keep them forever." Fu Tianyun comforted his wife. Although he was very reluctant in his heart, seeing that his two sons still stood out even among a group of new recruits, Fu Tianyun was only proud.

Zhao Li watched the car leave, and her heart was already filled with longing. For eighteen years, her son had never left her side. From the moment he was born, to the time he learned to walk, and then to when he became sensible and filial, she had never been absent.

The villagers gradually dispersed, leaving only the Fu family. Fu Baoer took Jiang Fengxia's hand and said, "Grandma, let's go back."

Jiang Fengxia wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and nodded, "Go home, let's go home."

The two old people were gathered in the middle, with their daughter and granddaughter surrounding them on both sides, chattering to make them laugh. Zhao Li and Fu Tianyun looked at each other and thought of what their son said last night.

"Mom and Dad, I don't ask for your forgiveness. You just need to not disturb me."

"We are here to pay back what you owe grandpa and grandma. Remember to talk less and do more in the future. Don't interfere in the affairs of grandpa, grandma, aunt, and sisters."

Zhao Li was very angry at first. Before her son left, he didn't tell his parents what was in his heart, but only remembered to criticize them. However, Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie looked serious, and it was obvious that they were serious.

Zhao Li had no choice but to agree. She felt aggrieved. In the past few years, she seldom went near them. Isn't that enough?

Fu Tianyun, as a father, felt embarrassed when his son said that. Did he think he didn't regret it? Everyone in the village knew that since the Fu family split up, the two sons' lives had gone from bad to worse, while the two elderly people, with their daughter and granddaughter, were living a prosperous life. Especially that Fu Baoer, the team leader and the secretary obeyed her every word!

Rather than repenting, Fu Tianyun was more unwilling to give up. He was unwilling to not get any benefits and unwilling to not be able to hold his head up in the village. In the past, everyone was about the same, but now everyone has become rich, leaving only their family and the third brother's family, who can do nothing but farming.

But Fu Tianyun also understood clearly that his parents had given up on paying any attention to them. If they still cared about them, he would not be able to help but be angry with them. But any discerning person could see that Fu Manshan and Jiang Fengxia did not care about the life or death of their two sons at all.
