With the "thump, thump" sound of the generator starting up, the field suddenly became quiet.
Whether it was the women who were just cracking melon seeds and peanuts and discussing non-stop, or the men who were bragging and joking, they all stopped at the same time.
Fu Baoer was patted by his grandfather and woke up rubbing his eyes: "Has it started, Grandpa?"
Fu Manshan nodded and handed his granddaughter a piece of shrimp cake. "It's started, come and see."
The projectionist adjusted the angle of the projector and the white screen was illuminated. Fu Baoer only felt a flash before his eyes, and then the sound of people talking sounded in his ears.
A girl with pigtails and a white shirt was passionately introducing to everyone how much the harvest was last year and how much the country's economy had grown. Then the scene changed, and pictures of people working and workers appeared. In the photos, everyone was full of energy, and their faces showed the love of life.
Then came tens of thousands of young men and women, wearing red flowers in front of them, waving goodbye to their loved ones at the train station. A voice introduced that these were the people's soldiers and the guardians of the country's prosperity and strength.
Finally, the picture flashed and the curtain darkened again.
"Grandpa, is it over?" Fu Baoer looked at Fu Manshan with his big eyes full of curiosity.
Chen Zhifang on the side whispered, "Shh! It's just begun!"
Fu Baoer turned her head and looked over. The curtain was shining again, and several people wearing white turbans appeared on it. Accompanied by the passionate music, three bright big words "Guerrilla Warfare" kept flashing.
It turned out to be a short news briefing, which is played before a movie.
Fu Baoer stared intently at the big screen. This thing was like the shadow play she had seen in her previous life, only more vivid, more flexible, and more real! Fun!
The sound quality of today's movies is actually not that good. It is always accompanied by a "rustling" sound, and sometimes the sound will suddenly disappear. Everyone can only see the picture but cannot hear any movement. The projectionist needs to be on duty all the time to adjust the sound.
But Fu Baoer still watched with great interest, as this was something she had never understood before.
It turns out that before she was born, China had experienced countless artillery fires and wars, and was so devastated. The leaders led the people to stand up tenaciously from the suffering. Our soldiers sacrificed countless lives in exchange for the current peace and tranquility.
Fu Baoer looked up at his grandparents and Chen Zhifang.
Why are they crying?
Fu Manshan wiped away his tears. He was born in 1912. When the war broke out, he was only 25 years old and his eldest son Fu Tiancheng was 6 years old. How did he and his wife survive in the war-torn era?
He forgot everything.
I only remember hiding again and again, going hungry again and again, and being thankful again and again that when I opened my eyes the next day, my wife and children were still alive.
New China is great. Even if I just follow everyone step by step to try and make mistakes, to reflect and explore, it is better than those twelve years.
Compared with death, what is hunger and cold?
Compared with the invaders, what are the conflicts among compatriots?
Fu Manshan and Jiang Fengxia looked at each other tacitly and held each other's hands tightly.
Fu Baoer also put his little hand on them and wiped away his grandparents' tears with his other hand.
Fu Manshan smiled with relief.
The movie has shown the fierce battle between the two sides. The sound of gunfire, artillery fire, and roars shook the earth and sky. The people present felt that they could not see enough and their hearts were in a knot.
Sometimes they were infuriated by the enemy's cunning, and sometimes they applauded our own cleverness.
When the lost ground was finally recovered, cheers broke out in the arena, getting louder and louder.
Many people present had actually experienced that period personally, which was far more tense and dangerous than what was shown in the movies. Yet, they were the calmest ones, and even felt a little heavy-hearted when they recalled the unhappy years.
Mainly young people and children are more excited.
Fu Baoer's little hands turned red from clapping.
It's amazing! In this era, there are such magical things that can record or interpret everything.
When the movie ended, Fu Baoer still felt that he had not had enough.
It would be great if I could watch a different movie every day.
When we got back, it was already past nine o'clock. This is very late in the countryside, and the children would usually have fallen asleep.
But now, everyone is in high spirits.
Several boys were running around, imitating scenes from the movie and making shooting gestures to each other. Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie were among them. When they passed by them, they aimed their hands at Fu Baoer's little head.
"Little sister! Look at the gun!" Cheng Jie ran while making an aiming gesture.
Fu Baoer also made a few "biubiubiu" sounds at him.
Zhao Zhao pulled up her two sisters and said, "Let's go! Let's go fight these two enemies too!"
Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie fought back, "We are the Eighth Route Army! You are the enemy!"
Seeing that it was getting dark, Jiang Fengxia was a little worried: "Don't run too far, just play near us, otherwise we won't be able to find you when it gets dark!"
"Got it, grandma!" Fu Baoer saluted Jiang Fengxia, "Forward!"
Jiang Fengxia was amused. These kids had learned everything in a short time. "If I had brought Heiwa earlier, it would have been safer."
"There are a lot of people here, and there are people from other villages too, so it won't be a big deal. There are so many people watching, don't be afraid," Fu Manshan said, but his eyes were always on the children who were fighting and playing, "Don't worry, I'm watching them."
Jiang Fengxia was no longer worried.
On the way back to the village, there were fewer people than when we came.
Maybe some young men and women who are dating or have feelings for each other would take this opportunity to talk for a while and fall behind.
But the overall atmosphere was very harmonious. There were only a few flashlights on the dark night road. In order to give themselves courage, everyone kept talking and discussing other people's affairs. The air was filled with laughter everywhere.
Except for Liu Shengli and Jiang Yiquan.
Liu Shengli was a little anxious: "Why didn't I see Xu Shuzhen? She was still there when the show ended."
"Don't make a fuss. We'll be waiting here the whole time. She must still be behind us," Jiang Yiquan was very confident in his eyesight. "Maybe she doesn't want to squeeze in with so many people and wants to come out last."
"What if she has someone with her?" Liu Shengli remembered that she came with a girl from the village.
Jiang Yiquan was very impatient. "I told you to observe more. The woman with Xu Shuzhen has a boyfriend. I found out that he's from the neighboring village. I must have taken advantage of today to meet him. I'm really impressed. Are you the one pursuing her or am I?"
"I'm sorry, it's my fault. I, I, I... I was too nervous." Liu Shengli's heart was pounding when he thought about what happened next.
The two of them were at the back of the crowd, waiting patiently.
Just when the two thought they really didn't see Xu Shuzhen and she had left, Jiang Yiquan saw a figure turning around.
"Here she comes! It's Xu Shuzhen, it's herself!"
