Why are you pretending to care now, Chapter 23?

Chapter 23 Why are you pretending to care now?

Before Nanxia could refuse, her mother had already answered the call. Because the phone was connected to the car's Bluetooth, a clear and magnetic male voice echoed in the car:

Why didn't you come to Ruifeng?

"Oh my, is this your colleague? His voice is so nice!" Nan's mother asked her daughter with a soft laugh. Just hearing the man's voice, she was already smitten.

"What's so nice about him? He's got a really sharp tongue. Just hang up and ignore him," Nan Xia said with a cold snort.

“That’s so rude. Keep driving, I’ll talk to him.” Since she was practically dying of boredom sitting in the car, Nan’s mother cleared her throat and asked in a high-pitched voice:

"Hello handsome, I'm Nanxia's mother. She's driving right now and can't talk easily. What can I do for you?"

"...Auntie, hello. Lawyer Nan didn't come to work today. Is there something wrong?" Song Yanzhi had overheard the conversation between the mother and daughter.

Her mother was very easy to talk to.

Just as Nan's mother was about to answer, Nan Xia tapped the car screen, hung up the phone, picked up her own phone, and turned it off.

I don't want to hear him talk, nor do I want him to know my whereabouts.

Song Yanzhi frowned as he looked at the phone that had been hung up. It must have been that woman who hung up, right?

He dialed again, but the phone was switched off.

What exactly did she go about?

"Your attitude towards your colleague seems a bit off. Come on, what's your relationship with her?" Who would treat a colleague like that?

Nan Xia froze for a moment, not expecting her mother to be so sensitive. She could only make up an excuse, saying, "I have a grudge against this colleague and I just don't want to talk to him. Don't overthink it."

“But you just said that the people at the law firm are all very nice.” Nan’s mother clearly did not believe her.

“I just didn’t want you to worry,” she continued, making up a story.

Seeing her unnatural expression, Nan's mother was even more skeptical. There must be something going on between this girl and that man!

I absolutely must go to her law firm and check it out when I have time.

After driving for a short while, the car stopped at the foot of the mountain.

The mother and daughter each carried a black umbrella, along with a large bouquet of white chrysanthemums and some offerings, as they got out of the car.

The temperature here is much cooler. Nanxia was wearing denim shorts and a loose white t-shirt today, and she felt the chill as soon as she got off the bus.

"Why is there no one here? It's so eerie. Should we not go up? Your dad won't blame us." Nan's mother looked around at the foggy surroundings, feeling a little scared.

"It's normal for it to be dark when it rains. Don't be so paranoid. There are no ghosts in the world. Since we're already here, let's go." Nanxia comforted her mother and walked up the stone steps.

The air was filled with the damp smell of earth. This rain, though gentle and unhurried, soaked the entire city thoroughly.

It took almost half an hour to reach her father's tombstone. Nanxia placed chrysanthemums and various offerings in front of the grave, and said only one sentence to her father:

"Dad, you're not allowed to reincarnate until I get justice for you. You have to see with your own eyes how those people go to hell..."

Nan's mother glanced at her daughter, who was more mature and composed than herself, and felt sorry for her. She was only twenty-five years old. Hmm, she would have to use less of her daughter's money in the future!

"You damned devil, you must protect our daughters from below! If anything happens to them, don't expect me to come and pay my respects to you again!"

"Oh, and please pray that Xiaxia will buy me a luxury house soon! I'm so suffocated living in that place right now..."

Yeah, once we buy the house, we'll use less of her money.

"Oh, and... never mind, I'll just burn the list for you. Take a look yourself, and make sure you fulfill all of them for me!"

As she spoke, Nan's mother took out several folded pieces of paper from her pocket, unfolded them, and found them covered with neatly written words.

Nanxia glanced at the list in her mother's hand, a row of black lines appearing on her forehead—

"Dad is dead. He's not some turtle in a wishing well that can grant you anything."

“Your dad has always spoiled me, and besides, he’s helped me achieve quite a few things over the years,” Mrs. Nan said proudly, taking out a lighter and trying to light it several times before she could.

Afternoon work hours.

Nanxia arrived at Ruifeng, pushed open the door, and saw the man standing with his back to the door in front of the French windows answering a phone call. She looked away from him.

Walk to your seat.

Hearing the door open, Song Yanzhi glanced back, then turned back to chat with the client for a few minutes before hanging up. He then turned back to her and said:

“Attorney Nan, you took half the money for this case, so you should complete your half of the work. I have no reason to do the work for you.”

Nan Xia looked up from the document, her voice thick with nasal congestion and hoarseness, "I will make up for the four hours I spent this morning. You don't need to finish it for me."

After saying that, I couldn't help but cough a few times because my sore, dry throat was itchy. I had caught a cold that morning.

Is she sick?

Song Yanzhi looked at her, his sword-like eyebrows furrowing slightly. Her voice was fine this morning. Did she get sick because she went out and had too much fun?

After working all afternoon, Nanxia felt dizzy. Hearing footsteps outside, she glanced at her watch and realized it was time to leave work.

She ordered a light takeout meal on her phone, planning to work overtime tonight to make up for the time she missed in the morning.

To avoid someone saying she took the money and did nothing.

"It's raining today, let's go home early," Song Yanzhi said suddenly, glancing at her.

"You can leave now." She replied coldly with just three words. Why is she pretending to care now?

He frowned again, his voice cool as he asked, "...Did you bring the medicine?"

"No need for Attorney Song to worry about this. You should leave now and not disturb my work." Nan Xia said to him, then got up, took her water glass, and went to the tea room.

Song Yanzhi glanced at her, his expression somber, but he didn't leave. He picked up his phone, ordered takeout, and then called the servants at the villa, asking them to come and feed the dogs.

Hearing the increasingly loud patter of rain outside, he went to the French windows and looked down. The neon lights on the street were already lit up, and long lines of cars were stuck in traffic.

The sidewalk was crowded with brightly colored umbrellas, like giant moving mushrooms.

Nan Xia came in with water and saw that he was still there. "Aren't you leaving, Attorney Song?"

“…There’s a traffic jam outside now,” he said.

Nanxia ignored him, sat down, took out the cold medicine she had brought, and took it one by one. Because of the rain, the streets outside were congested for more than three hours before the congestion eased up a little.

Around 10 p.m., Song Yanzhi called to her again in a deep voice: "You don't need to work overtime. If you're sick, go home early."

She glanced at the man opposite her and said indifferently, "Go on your way. I didn't ask you to stay here with me. Go back and be with your little assistant."

"If you're jealous, just say so. Don't be sarcastic."

He leaned back in his chair with his long legs crossed, pushed up his frameless glasses, and a barely perceptible smile played on his lips.

"Don't be so narcissistic, I'm not jealous of you." Nan Xia snorted.
