Chapter 8: Get Twenty Taels
"San'er, Gu Yan, Dad wants you to go back." In the afternoon, Gu Yan was tidying up the wooden house in front of the cave when his second brother Gu Bei came to call him.
Today, his father took him and his eldest brother to the city to sell game. When they came back, his mother found that the third brother had brought back a girl.
He also said that he would spend ten taels of silver to marry the girl, but his mother said that the family did not have that much silver. As a result, the third son got angry and took the girl back to the cave where he lived.
And he said that he doesn’t want his parents to interfere with his marriage in the future.
When they came back, their mother was sitting in the cave crying.
He said that it was just right for the third son to marry without his parents' interference. It just so happened that his wife wanted to live in the village at the foot of the mountain.
It would be a good idea to keep the money to build houses for them.
But this was just his inner thought, and he didn't dare say it in front of his father.
His mother knew that he wanted to move down the mountain to live, and she had been saving money for him these days.
He was afraid that the third son would get married and spend all the family money, and he didn't know when he would have enough money to build a house.
But he guessed that his father would not ignore the third son, so his father asked him to call the third son back.
When I got home, Gu Chongshan was sitting there smoking, and Gu Nian was weaving a backpack at the door.
Gu Yan called out, "Dad, big brother," and sat on the small bench next to Gu Chongshan.
Gu Chongshan nodded, took two more puffs of his cigarette, and then knocked on the pipe and said, "I heard from your mother that you brought back a girl?"
Gu Yan nodded honestly: "Yeah."
"What is the origin of that girl? Do you know?" Gu Chongshan asked again.
"She used to be a maid in a wealthy family. Now she has been redeemed, but her family has moved away.
She couldn't find her relatives and got lost in the mountains. When I met her, she was almost bitten by a poisonous snake. I killed the snake and saved her.
Dad, I like her and I want to marry her." Gu Yan emphasized the last sentence.
"You can only believe half of what your daughter says. No one knows her real situation. I'm afraid there will be trouble in the future." Gu Chongshan was more considerate.
"I'm not afraid. Besides, in our deep mountains and old forests, we haven't seen any outsiders for a year or two. Even if there is a problem, others can't find me." Gu Yan said confidently.
Gu Yan is not a fool. Li Wanqing’s words are full of loopholes, but he just doesn’t want to delve into them.
He liked Li Wanqing, and as long as she was willing to marry him, he wouldn't care what she did before or why she was in the mountains and forests.
Seeing that Gu Yan had thought everything through, Gu Chongshan stopped talking and simply nodded, saying, "It's all right once you've thought it through. Your mother said you'll give your daughter a betrothal gift of ten taels of silver?"
"Yes, I can't let my wife be worse off than others. But my mother said that there is no money at home, so she wants to get the girl to marry me out of nothing." Gu Yan said at the end, with resentment in his tone.
Gu Chongshan knew that Zhang Dahua didn't have much money, so all the money he earned over the years was divided into two parts.
One was given to Zhang Dahua, and the other was kept by himself.
"Don't worry about your mother, I will find a way to get the money. Are you sure your daughter is willing to be with you? If she is, we will get you married in two days." Gu Chongshan said.
"Okay, I get it. Besides the ten taels of silver, do we also need to prepare other things? Wanqing doesn't have a family, so I want to buy her two sets of clothes.
Also, I remember that my second brother gave a silver hairpin to my second sister-in-law, and my eldest brother gave a silver bracelet to my eldest sister-in-law.
It's not good to come to me and not give anything, right? Also, I'm not engaged yet, so shouldn't I give the engagement gift to my wife as well?" Gu Yan said the same thing, insisting that he couldn't suffer any loss.
Gu Chongshan looked at Gu Yan deeply for a while, and Gu Yan looked at him without flinching.
Finally, Gu Chongshan looked away: "I understand. Your family will give you everything you deserve."
Finally, when Gu Yan returned, he took away twenty taels of silver.
After Gu Yan left, Gu Bei was the first to get restless. He knew that he was not as influential as his elder brother in front of Gu Chongshan. So he moved to his elder brother's side, nudging him and winking at him to make him speak.
Although Gu Nian was also dissatisfied, he knew that since his father had given the silver to the third brother, it would be useless for him to say anything, and he would also offend the third brother.
So he looked at Gu Bei and shook his head.
Seeing that his elder brother refused to step forward, Gu Bei had no choice but to give up. He knew clearly that if there was anyone in the family who could make Gu Chongshan change his mind, that person must be his elder brother.
He doesn't have such great face with his father.
Since his father didn't work, he could only ask his mother Zhang Dahua for help. After all, Zhang Dahua really loved him.
Zhang Dahua was planting vegetables in a vegetable field not far from the cave. When she saw Gu Bei coming, she stopped what she was doing.
"Second brother, what's the matter with you coming here?" Zhang Dahua asked.
"Mom, my dad just gave the third child twenty taels of silver. Didn't you say there was no silver left at home?
"Mom, didn't you promise to build me a house at the foot of the mountain? When will you build it for me?" Gu Bei said deliberately pretending to be aggrieved.
"What? Your father gave the third brother twenty taels of silver? Where did he get the money? No, I have to go back and ask." Zhang Dahua hurriedly turned around and ran home.
"Mom, talk to my dad nicely and don't quarrel." Gu Bei looked at Zhang Dahua's hurried back with a smile on his face, but he also gave her some advice.
The vegetable garden was on the hillside not far from the cave, and Zhang Dahua quickly ran back home.
Seeing Gu Chongshan smoking in front of the cave, he shouted anxiously: "Boss, did you really give the third brother 20 taels of silver?"
Gu Chongshan looked at Gu Bei behind Zhang Dahua, and he was still confused. The second brother had gone to complain to his mother.
But he didn't want to hide it, and he couldn't hide it: "Yes, I gave it to him." Gu Chongshan nodded in admission.
"You...how do you have so much money? You..." Zhang Dahua didn't expect that Gu Chongshan actually had so much silver.
She knew that Gu Chongshan always kept some silver when he sold his prey, but she didn't expect that Gu Chongshan had so much silver in his hands.
"Okay, I know what you want to say. I'm only responsible for finding them a bride. As for what they'll do in the future, that's not my business.
The third son is getting married in two days, so you should hurry up and arrange it for him." Gu Chongshan instructed directly.
"That twenty taels is too much. The second son only spent ten taels, and that's because my in-laws favor boys over girls.
Head of the family, the girl that the third son likes is an orphan, so there is no need to give her so much silver.
It would be better to use this money to help the second son build two houses in the village, and then ask his second uncle to find him a job as a waiter.
The second son is in poor health, and it's impossible for him to support the family by hunting. We, as his parents, must always make more plans for him," Zhang Dahua whispered.
