Chapter 25: Gifts from the Dead
Only two family members can visit each bed at a time.
Under the complex gazes of Xiaohe's grandparents and mother, which contained expectation, worry, and reluctance, Qi Gu changed into a blue disposable isolation suit, entered the second door with Huang Hongyuan, and came to Xiaohe's bedside.
Huang He was eight years old, a lively and cheerful little girl. Now she was lying on the hospital bed with a pale face and disheveled long hair. However, when she saw Huang Hongyuan, she subconsciously wanted to liven up the atmosphere so as to reassure her father, whose face was full of worry and whose eyes were swollen like walnuts.
"Dad, I feel much better today... When can I be discharged from the hospital? I miss my grandparents and the little flower dog at the aunt's house downstairs." The little girl's eyes were clear and full of anticipation.
She actually vaguely guessed that her condition was somewhat serious, but she didn't want her family to worry too much.
"Okay... when Xiaohe recovers, Dad will take you to play with the aunt's little flower dog downstairs." Huang Hongyuan had a smile in his eyes, but his nose under the mask was sobbing secretly.
"Hello, Xiaohe." Qi Gu waited until the father and daughter finished their private conversation before speaking.
Huang He twisted her neck slightly and saw Qi Gu standing next to her. His appearance was very unfamiliar, but his eyes were extremely beautiful.
He is a good-looking boy, Huang He thought.
Her whole body was in pain, as if countless blenders were working on her at the same time, but she still smiled at this strange little brother.
"Xiao He, I want to ask you something. Can you please think about it and answer me seriously?" Qi Gu's usually calm voice became slightly gentler.
Huang He: “Okay.”
"Where did you go and what did you do before you fell ill? Did you bring anything home of unknown origin?" Qi Gu asked.
The little girl thought about it seriously: "I go to tutoring class every day. My grandma picks me up in the afternoon. We play with the little flower dog downstairs and wait for mom and dad to get home from get off work... There is nothing else. I didn't pick up anything at home. Mom said that if I pick up something, I should give it to the police uncle and police aunt."
Her voice was childish, but she spoke every word seriously.
"Well... Xiao He, did you feel anything strange before you felt unwell? You can tell me anything strange." Qi Gu reached out and rubbed the little girl's soft head, temporarily dispelling some of the black air that was causing her pain.
Huang He felt that her head didn't hurt as much anymore, and her thoughts became clearer and more coherent: "I was playing with building blocks at home. My father promised to play with me on Saturday, and he asked me to try it myself first... When I was playing with the building blocks, I suddenly felt someone touching my head. I thought it was grandma, so I called out, but when I turned around, I didn't see anyone behind me, and then I remembered that grandma was cooking in the kitchen at this time. It should be windy, right?"
Qi Gu answered seriously: "Yes, it is the wind."
Then, he said to Huang Hongyuan: "I need to go to your house."
Huang Hongyuan understood what was going on, and hurriedly fed Huang He a few bites of her favorite fruit. He then tucked in the quilt for her and told her to tell the doctors and nurses if she felt uncomfortable or had any problems, and not to endure it on her own.
Only then did he leave the ward reluctantly, looking back every few steps.
In the changing room, the two people quickly took off their isolation suits and changed them for other family members.
"Master Qi, how is our Xiaohe? Is there any way?" Wang Li, who had not changed her clothes, held Qi Gu's hand, with tears sparkling in her eyes.
"It can be cured, but we have to find the thing that hurt her first." Qi Gu said, "Both of you should think about whether there are any extra objects in the house recently... Xiao He is so weak now because something is seducing her soul. This kind of soul seduction often happens to young children. Young children are easily frightened, and their souls are more likely to be taken away by evil things."
Wang Li racked her brains to think of something, and finally shook her head seriously: "Xiao He would never bring anything of unknown origin home. Last time, this child saw a butterfly hairpin downstairs in the community and shouted that she wanted to hand it over to the police. It was only after I persuaded her that she handed it over to the property management."
In the end, the couple took Qi Gu with them to their home on the Fourth Ring Road.
They live in an old community where the house prices are not low and the property is good. Although the community facilities are a bit old, it still looks clean and fresh, and the feng shui is also good.
When they entered the community, the sanitation worker and security guard talked to them and asked how Xiaohe was doing, with concern in their words.
It can be seen that Huang Hongyuan's family is well-liked in the community.
The couple walked in front, leading Qi Gu.
When passing by the lush green bushes under the building, Qi Gu keenly caught a glimpse of red dots mixed in the bushes, which looked like the debris left after firecrackers.
Huang Hongyuan's house is on the eighth floor. It is elegantly decorated and has a strong atmosphere of life. It can be seen that it is a very warm home.
Qi Gu walked around the two floors, meeting the expectant gazes of the couple. He shook his head and said, "Everything in the house is normal. I didn't see any evil things."
Wang Li's body suddenly went limp. She seemed to have lost all her strength in an instant, like a deflated balloon: "What should we do now? How about you take another look, take a closer look? Maybe the thing has been hidden?"
For Wang Li now, finding the evil object that took away Huang He's soul is the hope of finding Huang He's recovery.
Thinking of this, she dragged her heavy body, which seemed to weigh several thousand pounds, and rushed straight to the TV cabinet, rummaging through the drawers and started looking for it again.
She threw the things out in a mess, scattering them all over the floor.
A round wooden sculpture of a puppy rolled to Qi Gu's feet and stopped.
Qi Gu lowered his eyes and saw a smear of bright red paper scraps on one of the eyes on the wood carving.
Holding the puppy in his palm, Qi Gu asked, "Where did this thing come from?"
Wang Li turned around, frowned and thought for a moment: "This should be a set. It was given to Xiao He by a friend my mother made when she was doing square dancing. The old lady liked Xiao He very much and would bring Xiao He a new one every time she came to my house."
"However, she passed away some time ago. We didn't dare tell Xiao He because we were afraid that she would be sad." Huang Hongyuan continued, "Is there anything wrong with this puppy?"
"No problem, but... there are still five minutes until the time comes. Xiao He's grandparents should still be in the ward. Can you call and ask them when was the last time Xiao He saw that old lady?"
As Qi Gu finished speaking, Wang Li and Huang Hongyuan both stiffened and broke out in cold sweats at his sudden words.
