Let go

Let go

"Qiuqiu, you're already 27. If you don't get married soon, you'll become a virgin..." This was the tenth time Song's mother had called to urge her to get married.

Song Huan said somewhat helplessly, "Mom, I have no plans to get married right now..."

"I'm just worried that when you get old, your parents won't be around to take care of you." Song's mother paused, "This way, at least you'll have someone to rely on."

Song Huan was stunned for a moment: "Mom..."

"Go and meet Jiang Rangshi next week, and try to get along with him first."

Song Huan pursed her lips and then said, "Okay, I'll go."

"Qiuqiu, have you not forgotten that boy?" Song's mother asked.

There was a few seconds of silence on Song Huan's end, and then Song's mother heard a voice trembling with tears: "Yes."

How could you so easily forget the boy you dream about?

He's already married; it's time to let go.

——

The day before the meeting, Lin Xing sent a text message.

[Song Huan, can we talk?]

Song Huan stared at the message in a daze for a long time.

She thought about it and finally agreed.

Try to let go of yourself and find another young person.

She changed into her favorite outfit from high school, put on a white bracelet, applied light makeup, and went out.

They still arranged to meet at Chen Lao Restaurant near Xuqiu No. 1 Middle School.

Several years later, Chen's Restaurant still looks exactly the same as it did back then.

It's as if nothing has changed.

Song Huan first found a place to sit down, and then looked around.

"Young lady, how old are you this year?" The proprietress handed the menu to Song Huan.

“I’m 27,” Song Huan replied.

"You're 27 already. There used to be a guy who was about your age who would come to my place every day to eat osmanthus cake, and he never got tired of it."

"I think her name is something like Lin Xing."

"Whoosh—"

The menu slipped from his hand. Song Huan paused for a few seconds, then smiled at the proprietress and said, "You can go ahead and get busy. I'll give you the menu in a bit."

The proprietress nodded in confusion and then left. Song Huan bent down, picked up the menu, and quickly wiped away her tears with her arm.

Ashin, can you please stop doing this? Otherwise, I'll think of you every time I want to, and I won't be able to let go.

I can't be soft-hearted anymore, can you please stop?

......

A few minutes later, Lin Xing arrived.

The waiters who pass by him will greet him with a smile: "Young man, here for osmanthus cake again?"

Lin Xing smiled but did not answer.

At times like these, Song Huan would feel a pang of conscience.

He's been so good to you, how could you let him down?

"Long time no see, Song Huan." Lin Xing sat down opposite Song Huan.

"Long time no see, Lin Xing," Song Huan said politely.

Lin Xing paused for a few seconds, then laughed and said, "That sounds too formal. How about I just call you A-Qiu?"

Song Huan replied in a hoarse voice, "Alright, Ah Xing."

Lin Xing asked, "What would you like to eat? It's on me."

"Sweet and sour pork." Song Huan blurted out.

Lin Xing did not speak.

They ordered a few more things casually, and after handing the menu to the waiter, an awkward atmosphere ensued between them.

"Are you doing alright?" Lin Xing asked cautiously.

Song Huan chuckled, "That's great. How about you?"

"It's not bad."

"Actually, I wanted to ask you about that book."

Song Huan unconsciously clenched her fist.

“That’s not me, you’ve mistaken me for someone else,” Song Huan said hoarsely.

But Lin Xing firmly stated:

"No, that's you, I can't mistake you."

No matter how much time has passed, I will still recognize you at a glance.

Song Huan just smiled and didn't answer.

"That book was really good; I read it all in one night," Lin Xing commented.

“It is quite beautiful,” Song Huan said, going along with his words.

It was a teenage girl's unrequited love, encompassing so many emotions.

I'm sorry about what happened before, I didn't want you to—

“Ah Xing”.

Lin Xing looked at Song Huan with a puzzled expression.

"Let bygones be bygones, there's no need to apologize. We both have new lives now, let's forget about those unpleasant things."

Finally, I wish you a smooth life and a bright future.

——

It was already past one o'clock when we finished eating.

After saying goodbye to Lin Xing, Song Huan strolled alone through the streets.

The trees along the road were bare from the snow, and the snow clinging to them was being baked by the one o'clock sun.

Suddenly, Song Huan glanced into the alley.

It's a young couple kissing.

The kiss was sweet yet awkward.

Song Huan withdrew her gaze and continued her stroll.

The corners of her lips were turning down.

If it were a different ending, would we be kissing like that young couple now, Ah-Xing?
