Let go
Friday evening.
The night sky was strewn with scattered stars, twinkling like fireflies. A cool evening breeze whistled past the window.
Lin Xing sat at her desk, diligently working on her craft.
Tomorrow, Saturday, is Song Huan's birthday.
It was the first birthday I spent with her.
He was making something like a star lantern: the outside was a large star made of bright yellow paper, decorated with some gold flakes, and inside was a small light. When turned on, the whole star would light up, and most importantly, there were dozens of small stars inside.
Lin Xing spent an entire night folding and making these little stars.
Lin Xing picked up a pen and drew a smiley face on it.
"Ring ring ring." A series of ringtones sounded, and the caller ID showed: Lin Zhisong.
Lin Xing clicked her tongue and answered the phone with disgust.
"Hey, Lin Xing." Lin Zhisong's voice made Lin Xing feel disgusted.
"What is it?" Lin Xing asked calmly, without a trace of emotion.
"I'll leave in January."
"No way!" Lin Xing said angrily.
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone: "July, the latest possible date, no discussion."
Lin Xing wanted to say something more, but the call had already ended.
Lin Xing chuckled softly and tossed her phone aside.
He didn't want to leave; he wanted to see Teacher A-Qiu again.
Sweat beaded on Lin Xing's forehead. He tilted his head back and swallowed hard.
He caught a glimpse of the unfinished star lantern out of the corner of his eye.
After pausing for a few seconds, he stood up, picked up a pen, and wrote on the lantern:
Teacher A-Qiu, would you be willing to become a bright star and light up the night sky for A-Xing?
—Lin Xing
Lin Xing wrote in very small handwriting, hoping that Song Huan would see it, yet also not wanting her to see it.
——
On Saturday morning, soft sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on Song Huan's desk.
It was just past 7 o'clock, and Song Huan's family was already busy.
Song Huan is choosing clothes in front of the mirror.
"Qiuqiu, have you made your choice?" Song's mother asked from outside the room.
Song Huan picked out a short sweatshirt that her aunt had bought for her. It was mostly white with a few English letters etched on the front. It had two thin straps that swayed slightly. There were also small lace trims on the sleeves.
She wore a cherry-pink mini skirt that reached her thighs, with light flowers embroidered on the hem. She paired it with white stockings and black boots, which gave her a youthful and energetic look.
Today she wore her hair in two braids, the two fish-like braids hanging down to her chest. In the mirror, her dark brown pupils were slightly glossy, and her lips were as delicate as water, as if they could be broken with a flick of a finger.
Song Huan smiled and called out to her mother outside the door, "Mom, I've made my choice."
When Song's mother came in and saw Song Huan's outfit, she patted Song Huan's shoulder and said, "You've grown up and become so beautiful."
Song Huan smiled shyly.
After giving a few instructions, Song's mother left the room, her footsteps fading into the distance. Song Huan picked up her phone and dialed Xu Han's number.
A moment later, the call connected, and Xu Han seemed even more excited than Song Huan: "Happy 19th birthday, Huanhuan! I'll be coming to your house later, I brought you a gift."
Song Huan chuckled: "We've known each other for so long, why bring a gift?"
"Oh dear, you seem as old-fashioned as those other parents. This is what makes it feel special."
Song Huan remained silent, which was taken as agreement with Xu Han's idea.
"By the way, do you have Lin Xing's phone number?" Xu Han didn't know why she brought this up.
Song Huan paused for a few seconds before slowly uttering a single word: "No..."
To be honest, I've taken at least four or five days of extra classes, but I still don't have their contact information...
Song Huan closed her eyes weakly: "I hope he can arrive before noon."
At this moment, Lin Xing was carrying a lantern and pressed the elevator button to go to the 21st floor.
He now regrets not asking for Song Huan's contact information.
"I wonder what A-Qiu is doing..." Lin Xing leaned against the corner of the elevator, pondering this question.
The 21st floor was reached quickly. Lin Xing stepped out of the elevator and carefully checked the apartment number. After confirming it was number 28, he knocked on Song Huan's door.
Who is it?
"It's me, Lin Xing."
Song Huan slowly opened the door, saying as she did so, "Why are you here so early?"
"It's getting late, it's almost 9 o'clock."
At this time, he would have already gotten up and started his daily tutoring.
Lin Xing stuffed the lantern into Song Huan's arms: "A gift for you."
Song Huan was surprised that Lin Xing would give her a gift, so she quickly thanked him and got him slippers.
After entering the room, Lin Xing looked around and asked Song Huan, "Where are your parents?"
"Oh, they went to buy groceries. Xu Han is already on her way. I also invited some classmates. You won't be lonely." Song Huan poured Lin Xing a glass of water. "You can watch some TV first."
"I'll go downstairs for a bit," Lin Xing suddenly said.
Song Huan didn't object and told him to go and come back as soon as possible.
After Lin Xing left, Song Huan began to examine the star lantern that Lin Xing had made for her.
The lantern is made of high-quality material and looks like it was made with care.
It can be said that this is the most beautiful lantern Song Huan has ever seen.
Priceless treasure.
Song Huan wrote these four words on the star.
After a while, Xu Han skipped and hopped to Song Huan's house, followed by some classmates.
They all offered their blessings in turn, creating a lively atmosphere.
"Huanhuan, look." Xu Han took out a box from her bosom, inside which were a pair of bracelets.
"One for you, one for me, bestie bracelets!"
Song Huan just kept smiling and staring at her.
A series of footsteps echoed down the corridor.
The door opened, and there were three people in front of me.
Song Huan's parents, and Lin Xing...
Lin Xing was carrying meat and several cups of milk tea. He placed the milk tea on the table and took the meat into the kitchen.
"I bought some milk tea, one cup for each person," Lin Xing said casually.
There were 12 people in total, and Lin Xing bought 14 cups. After the others got theirs, Lin Xing handed the milk tea to Mr. and Mrs. Song: "Uncle and Aunt, thank you for your hard work."
Mr. and Mrs. Song thanked them and praised the child for being sensible.
The two exchanged a few words and then went into the kitchen.
At this moment, Xu Han whispered to Song Huan, "Boss Lin is so generous today, 14 cups of milk tea, that's quite a lot of money, enough for me to have several big meals."
Song Huan nodded.
Lin Xing picked up the remaining cup of milk tea on the table and sat down next to Song Huan.
Song Huan glanced at her casually and noticed Lin Xing's Adam's apple moving slowly as she swallowed.
She immediately looked away, as if nothing had happened.
"Let's play Truth or Dare." Jiang Siye, who had just transferred to another class a few days ago, held up a water bottle and asked for everyone's opinion.
Everyone agreed.
"Okay, I'll start now." Jiang Siye raised the horizontal bar high, then quickly lowered it and spun it around.
The water bottle gradually came to rest in Lin Xing's direction.
"You're the one. Truth or Dare." Jiang Siye said to Lin Xing.
"The truth," Lin Xing replied.
"Question: Do you have someone you like?"
Lin Xing pondered for a while, while Song Huan kept her eyes fixed on Lin Xing.
"have."
The group exchanged knowing smiles and then began the next round.
“Huanhuan, I have someone I like~” Xu Han said with a mischievous smile, “You’d better hurry up.”
"Stop messing around," Song Huan said with a laugh.
Who is the person he likes? She really wanted to know.
——
Noon, 12 o'clock.
"Dinner's ready," Song's mother called out, carrying a plate of dishes.
People got up and started looking for places to sit.
Song Huan sat in the main seat, and Lin Xing sat next to her.
The dishes on the table were very plentiful; one look was enough to make you swoon.
Some people were offering toasts, while others were chatting with Mr. and Mrs. Song, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
The meal took about an hour.
Considering that everyone had things to do in the afternoon, Song's mother decided to have the cake at noon instead.
When the cake was taken out, Song's mother put a crown on Song Huan's head, while Song's father handed out plates.
The cake was ordered by Song Huan. The cream was white and glossy, and it was decorated with various shapes. The cake had two layers: the first layer was pink, and the second layer was blue. It was also decorated with star-shaped decorations around the edges.
The candles were lit, and the small flames rose as everyone sang "Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You..."
Song Huan closed her eyes, clasped her hands together, and made a wish.
She made two wishes:
Everyone around is safe and sound.
Ah Xing has a bright future ahead of her.
Her eyes sparkled.
Lin Xing, standing behind him, may have made a wish:
Teacher A-Qiu
May everything go smoothly for you.
This was the first birthday he spent with her.
