Chapter 140 Adjutant
There are a lot of things to do in the new territory. The troops and manpower need to be redeployed, the clues left by the Evil Eye Moon need to be investigated, the new veterans need to settle down, and Little Bone needs to set up a new factory... All the things are piling up on Andre's desk, and I'm afraid he won't be able to finish them even if he works for three days and three nights without sleep.
Since it couldn't be finished, there was no need to be too anxious. Andre picked out the most urgent matters, selected a few adjutants to handle the affairs, then happily put down his burden and went home to eat.
Being a local lord's trusted aide has always been a lucrative position, and anyone with connections would fight tooth and nail for it. In the past, nobles had their own personal guards, and outsiders couldn't squeeze in. A commander without any support, like Andrei, had to find his own adjutants.
Andre did not hide this matter. Whether it was civil or military, he selected one person from each side from the soldiers given by their parents and the "old employees" in the west city of Eston, making up a total of four adjutants.
On the Kingdom Knights' side, the highest-ranking individual, chosen from among the hundred, was Nolan H. Hoffman. He had messy brown hair, strikingly bright blue eyes, a handsome face, and a sturdy physique. At only thirty-four, he had already risen to the rank of centurion, suggesting he was both intelligent and courageous.
Nolan's partner was a former member of the Order, a shadowy detective who had long collaborated with Winston, taking turns as Winchester's chief clerk. Now that the lord had changed, the Order's membership had been disrupted, and he had taken advantage of this opportunity to "parachute in" under a new identity: Buster H. Pukinson, taking over the position of chief clerk.
This Clerk Buster is very young, only in his early twenties, with gray-black hair and golden-green cat eyes. He looks like a tabby cat incarnated as a human. When he smiles, he reveals two cute fangs, and seems to have an approachable personality.
In this way, the 'Winchester Clerk' who seemed to know too much about Baron Neumann could retire and return home, and be replaced by a young man who seemed to know nothing but actually knew everything. This would make the opponents in the dark relax their vigilance and perhaps reveal their flaws more easily.
As for the management of the territory, Angris H. Bryman, an employee of the municipal office, was inexplicably appointed to be one of the adjutants; the other was Livland, the son of Dresden's old butler, whom Andre borrowed from his mother.
This man is simply a replica of the old butler. He wears a butler's uniform all year round and knows everything that the nobles need to know. He can help Andre take care of all the things that he doesn't like to take care of.
The four lieutenants, working in pairs, began to work immediately after taking office: Nolan was responsible for managing the veterans, reorganizing the Kingdom Knights and city security in the west city of Eston; Bast was responsible for continuing to track down clues about the Evil Eye Moon and the Drodana Chamber of Commerce; Angris was responsible for finding various suitable locations for factory construction in and outside the city; and Livland was responsible for the preliminary processing of all matters reported by the territory, and after integration, he submitted them to Andre for decision.
The transition of power between the old and new in this territory was completed so smoothly and calmly that it stunned many who had been waiting to witness the spectacle. Meanwhile, in a noble mansion in the royal capital, upon hearing the news that Viscount Andre had returned to the territory, a delicate hand angrily threw a silver wine glass.
"They escaped so quickly!" Elenor... or rather, Dresi said dissatisfiedly. She reclined on the chaise longue, ignoring the thrown cup and spilled wine, biting her nails in annoyance. "It's ridiculous! How can they always escape my arrangements so perfectly?!"
What initially struck Dresi as unsettling was the loss of contact with Leila. The supposedly loyal puppet hadn't sent any messages. Dresi finally unearthed the old master-servant contract in the netherworld, and with her spiritual power, she traced that mysterious connection downward, only to discover that the thread connecting master and servant had inexplicably snapped mid-flight.
Dresi was furious after losing a priceless alchemical doll in vain without getting any information, when she heard news from the royal capital that Baron Neumann's territory was going to be given to Andre.
To be honest, although it was Dresi herself who gave the order to deal with Neumann, the traitor, she did not expect the king to hand over the territory to Andre so quickly. She had not yet taken advantage of the chaos to transport the property she had snatched back from Neumann out of the territory!
She hurried all the way from Baron Chand's territory to the capital, only just making it to the enfeoffment ceremony. She had assumed, as was customary among the nobles, that Andrei and the little lich would remain in the capital for a month or two, establishing themselves at the endless dances and receptions. Unexpectedly, after the enfeoffment ceremony, the two quickly vanished from public view, now opening a restaurant in the capital with Baron Lothar's daughter, and now a snack bar on the grounds of the Royal Academy of Magic.
It's definitely not a proper job!
"That bastard Andre is such a problem," Deresi muttered. "The High Priest's bloodline is my natural nemesis... Tsk, I was planning to attack that little lich from her side, but she's as slippery as a loach... There's no way I could catch her!"
A perfectly normal lich, she'd spend her days hanging out with the Moon Worship Cult's high priest, or cooking in a small shop kitchen with a line stretching three blocks across... She couldn't even squeeze into a crowded place like that! Not to mention that she was a vegetarian, and if she showed up at a fried chicken shop and was recognized, it would be unacceptable.
Listening to her complaints, Countess Durand de Canberra calmly sipped her red wine, the sapphire brooch on her chest gleaming with a dreamy brilliance: "Don't worry, I still have a date with her."
"That's true, but they've already returned to their territory before Camberus arrived. The next time we meet, I'm afraid it'll be in that bastard's territory..." Dracy bit her nails. "Damn it! If I'd been given more time to make arrangements in advance, I wouldn't have been so late for everything..."
The problem with transportation in this era is that it is too inconvenient. If the distance between two parties is too far, it will take several days to communicate and pass on messages. It would take her three to five days just to call people over. Now the little lich has run away, and the 'lich expert' she invited is still on the way!
...I don't know how Maybury manages to deliver news so quickly thousands of miles away. Now the pigeons in the palace are idle, but Maybury can let the soldiers far away in the border and the shadow army lurking throughout the country get the latest military orders in a moment, always catching her people off guard. It's really hateful.
