Chapter 2: The Lich's Failure
Although he didn't know why he could understand the earthworm language of this world, Jiangyou read the chapter on "Lich Transformation" carefully with the mentality of "make the best of it".
Even though she knew nothing about magic before, when she closed the book, Jiangyou felt that she had become a quick-learning genius in the art of lich transformation. She also understood the causes of many strange phenomena that happened to her.
The so-called lich is actually an undead creature that is accidentally produced by magical accidents. Although the reasons for their appearance vary, the effect of the "finished product" is always quite gratifying - liches will not age or die naturally.
In reality, as long as the lich's soul-holding phylactery remains intact, no matter how its body deteriorates, it cannot lead to its death. The body is merely a shell, capable of replacement and repair... though this requires a specific, tedious process and a significant investment of cost and materials, it is, at least, a viable method of achieving immortality.
The short-lived ghost craftsman You could very well understand this pursuit of immortality. She herself had hoped more than once that she could obtain eternal life... or at least a longer life.
Now, she really has become an immortal creature, but her appearance is a little weird... The good news is that her body can be replaced; the bad news is that she doesn't know how to replace it for the time being.
Whether it is a successful lich or a failed lich, both will gain eternal life, but the former is a complete life form, while the latter has its own failures... The good news is that mistakes can be remedied and weaknesses can be repaired; the bad news is that Jiangyou also doesn't know why he is a failure and where the failure lies.
Liches are products of magic. Their bodies—or for Jiangyou, their skeletons—are all generated by magic, not from any actual living creature. This attribute gives liches a wonderful racial talent—[Magical Affinity].
Liches with [Magic Affinity] can easily understand all magical knowledge. All unknown magical languages can be easily deciphered in their eyes, and all magical elements can be keenly perceived and captured by them... Liches are born to be future masters of magic, no matter which world their souls come from or whether they have ever been exposed to magic.
"Wow, that's great." Takumi said sincerely, "It seems this is why I can understand these earthworm characters and these seemingly difficult magic tomes... Then the next key point is to figure out why I traveled through time and space as a lich, and a failed work at that."
She searched the desk again and found a journal in a drawer, clearly a record kept by the homeowner. Honestly, the journal was haphazardly written, with no dates or order. It was obvious the homeowner had scribbled it down to vent his emotions. Even just a glance at a few lines made Jiangyou deeply concerned about the original owner's mental health...
But then again, as long as it's a story-based exploration puzzle game, there will be more or less clues like diaries and journals...
The craftsman sighed quietly, "Who would keep a diary these days?"
I failed again!
My mentor was right, I have no talent at all in black magic!
But what can I do?
Failure! Failure! Repeated failure! Materials and money are almost gone! And my lifespan is almost over. If I can't become a lich in time, I will die...
I tried not to think about this painful fact, but it still weighed on me... I tried hard to trace the runes according to the instructions in the book, but my hands couldn't stop shaking...
I think this is the last chance to try...
If I fail, this will be my last words. I will leave all my property, including this brewing workshop, the Crucible of Time left by my mother, my few remaining coins, the magic books I have collected over the years, and all magical materials, to my dear mentor, Mebucha Huntington.
I thank him for doing his utmost to obtain the "Charter of Dark Arts" from His Majesty the King for me, a useless disciple. However, I am a fool and may very likely let down my mentor's efforts and kindness!
I know that my mentor does not need these meager assets of mine, but if I really fail, let these assets help me repay my mentor’s kindness!
...Alas, I wonder who will collect my body, and who will discover this will...]
There was also a small piece of paper on this page.
[No matter who you are, please promise me to destroy my treasured box of "The Most Beautiful Men in Huntington" albums! Please! Promise me! Save the last of this poor man's reputation! It's hidden under my bed!]
Jiang You: "..."
She suddenly remembered the browser history that she had not cleared before she died, and the fan art collections piled under the bed, and suddenly felt a little like a heart attack - fortunately, she no longer had a heart, so she would never die from a heart attack again!
"It hurts so much, sister, it hurts so much." She murmured, picking up the note with her bony claws: "I will definitely fulfill your last wish!"
Putting aside the inexplicable suicide wish commission, Jiangyou figured out a few things from this log: the unlucky owner of the house was obviously not good at black magic and was on the verge of death. Becoming a lich was her last chance - Jiangyou subconsciously guessed that the other party should be a girl - but it was obvious that she failed for some reason.
Next, Jiang You returned to the outer room to continue checking the coffin and soon discovered the reason for the failure.
"...The name of the soul is written wrong." The white skeleton squatted on the ground and used her bone claws to brush across the crooked and clumsy magic words written in the center of the magic circle. The moment her claws touched the words, the faint light of the soul lit up on her bones.
Her instinct told her that it was the code name of the soul. Every soul in the world had such a magical symbol that corresponded to itself one by one.
This symbol, or rather, the name of a soul, could be placed within a magic circle to cast spells and curses upon the corresponding soul... Jiangyou scratched her skull with her claws, thinking it was similar to her birth chart.
In the center of the magic circle was written the soul symbol of her, Takumi Yuu, from another world. Judging by the handwriting, the squiggly earthworm characters seemed to have trembled a bit, perhaps simply a typo caused by the owner's trembling hands.
Unfortunately, in the world of magic, a single typo can lead to vastly different results.
