Chapter 10

From Zheng Gang's brief narration, Lin Man learned about what happened yesterday.

There were more than a dozen people who started the riot yesterday. They robbed and killed several people who were still able to have enough food to eat. Those people were relatives of the base management and had connections. They ate well, lived well, and had good things to do.

All the management have left, but it is impossible to take away all the connections. Although those who stay are also waiting to die, the conditions are still the best.

Being fat but not strong, and having been the subject of envy for a long time, it seems not surprising that such a disaster has occurred.

Such incidents stimulated others, and more and more people joined the gang. They became more and more rampant, hacking and robbing people everywhere, and even started a fire just to roast a few potatoes, burning down the base.

"There were more than fifty people who caused the riot, and only these eight are left." Zheng Gang said lightly. The others were naturally dead.

But the damage had already been done. No one knew how many people had been killed or burned to death, and no one knew where those who were still alive had fled to. The base was considered to be disbanded.

After hearing this, Lin Man asked, "What should we do next?"

Zheng Gang smiled bitterly: "What else can there be in the future?"

Lin Man wanted to say, why are you still trying so hard to protect these elderly, weak, women and children when you know there is no future?

But she didn't ask. Even if she really had to die, dying quietly and honorably was better than dying in humiliation.

She felt heavy-hearted as she looked at the faces of those who had survived, their joy barely lingering for a few minutes before returning to numbness and despair. Without food and water, these people had no way to survive. So what if they had defeated the villains? There was nothing to be happy about.

And what can she do in the face of all this?

If everyone died, except for her, her mother, and the three people from the Wu family, would they be able to survive in this place full of dead people? But where could they go if they left here?

From any perspective, she hopes that as many people as possible who will not do evil can survive.

These people did not stay in the warehouse for long. They wanted to go back to see if their houses were still there and to find out if their lost relatives and friends were still there.

Lin Man also followed.

The base was in a mess. Large areas of houses were burned down. There were some corpses in the ruins, some charred and some not. There were a lot of dried black bloodstains on the streets. There was no sign of a living person.

Lin Man also went back to take a look at the area where her home was. Most of the houses there were burnt down, and her house was also burned down with only the earthen walls left.

Looking at the house where he had lived for more than ten years, Lin Man felt sad.

She quietly circled back to the slope of the plantation and turned the soil over. The sun was still strong, so she only needed to keep doing it for a few hours.

Then she stood on the slope, looked into the plantation, and suddenly realized a big problem.

The fields in the plantation were dug up by her. The people just now didn't pay attention to this, but if someone became suspicious and found out that it was her who was digging the soil, they would wonder where she dug up all the soil and what she was going to do with it.

Because of this, Lin Man was so nervous that he didn't even feel hungry. He originally wanted to test the awakening of his superpowers, but he no longer had the energy to do so.

She counted the time and waited until two o'clock in the afternoon. She asked the space and it finally said that the soil was almost disinfected.

Lin Man quickly started to clean up.

After working for more than half an hour, we collected 16.4 cubic meters of soil, exceeding the task target.

There was still some soil on the slope, but it was no longer needed. She collected it and piled it in the wasteland below the slope. Then she left without stopping and took away everything.

Hoes, shovels, baskets, and buried casseroles.

Leave nothing behind that would reveal yourself.

After running to the mountains, she finally had time to ask the space: "How is it?"

"The 100 cubic meter mission was completed ahead of schedule." The voice of the space echoed in her mind. "I am very satisfied with your serious and diligent attitude. Are you willing to sign a contract with me?"

"contract?"

"You can understand that there will be a close and stable relationship between us. From now on, I will give you three kinds of food or other things every day. As long as I have them, you can choose them. But you cannot reveal my existence and you need to work for me." Space said.

"What kind of work?" Lin Man asked.

"Well, just some farm work." In the space, the little fat chicken stood on the soil that had covered every corner.

"Farm work?" Lin Man's eyes lit up. "You need so much soil to grow something, right? What? Edible crops?"

Lin Man's heartbeat quickened again, as if he saw hope.

"They are edible crops." The main reason is that there are only a few kinds of seeds now, and they are all crops from this world. There is no choice at all.

"I am willing, I am willing!" Lin Man said immediately, farming. She didn't know about other places and other people, but she only knew that in the past year, farming was the most beloved and desired activity of the people in the Peace Base.

But I just can’t plant it.

Even if the things grown in the space have nothing to do with her, Lin Man is happy! This activity itself represents harvest, hope, abundance and stability.

"Sign the contract! I'm willing to sign!" Lin Mandu couldn't wait any longer, fearing that this space would go back on its word.

The little fat chicken said, "Don't worry, I need your blood to sign the contract."

"Blood?" In a time when starvation could kill people at any moment, blood loss often meant death. Lin Man hesitated for a moment, "How much do you need?"

"Not a lot, maybe half a bowl."

Lin Man smiled: "Okay, sign it." She was grateful for this space, but she still hoped to survive in it, so she had to agree to this condition. It was just half a bowl of blood, wasn't it? She wouldn't die if she lost this little blood.

"Then enter the space."

Lin Man's mind moved, and the next moment she appeared in the space. However, this time she was no longer at the table, but on a piece of land. And this land... wasn't it the soil she brought in?

She opened her mouth and looked around in wonder. The land was not very big, about a hundred square meters. It was still surrounded by fog, and she couldn't see what was behind the fog. In a corner, there was a shabby-looking cabin.

"Let's sign the contract and stretch out your hand." A childish and crisp voice came.

Lin Man lowered his head and saw a white thing that looked a bit like a chicken.

Lin Man was shocked: "Who are you?"

"I am who I am, the steward of this space." The white fat little chicken puffed out its chest. It was smaller than it was nine days ago and didn't look as fat anymore.

"Are you the butler? But your voice..."

"Oh, I was pretending to have that voice before, this is my real voice." Now that we are all family, there is no need to use that voice to scare people anymore.

Lin Man never imagined that such a cold and majestic voice would come from such a little thing. No wonder she sometimes always felt that the voice was full of childish arrogance.

"Um, what should I call you?"

"What's your name?" The little fat chicken seemed to remember something and became a little depressed. It said, "Just call me Guan Guan."

What a sloppy name, is it a temporary pseudonym?

But Lin Man had no objection. It was just a name after all: "Hello, Guanguan, you can call me Xiaoman from now on. I'm ready." Lin Man stretched out his hands.

Guan Guan looked at it and said, "Just the left hand will do." It jumped onto Lin Man's left hand, and pecked her palm with its sharp beak that looked like a marshmallow. It hurt so much. This beak looks like a marshmallow, but it turns out to be so sharp!

Blood slowly flowed out and dripped into the soil under his feet, and then a circular formation-like figure gradually appeared under the soil. Lin Man opened his eyes wide and watched all this almost holding his breath, even forgetting the pain in his hand.

After a long while—mainly because Lin Man had less blood in his body and the blood flow was slow, which prolonged the time—Guan Guan suddenly said, "The contract is done!"

The red light array suddenly lit up, then retracted back into the ground. At the same time, the wound on Lin Man's palm began to heal. She felt a little dizzy and felt much more tired than before.

She swayed and sat on the ground.

"Oh, you're too weak." Guan Guan, who was running around on the ground, saw this and hurried over. "You signed a contract like this and you can't stand it."

Although this guy was muttering, he still jumped onto Lin Man's shoulder, opened his sharp mouth and blew a breath at Lin Man.

A ball of white mist rushed towards Lin Man's eyebrows and disappeared.

Lin Man felt a chill between his brows, and then he instantly became alert. The dizziness, fatigue, weakness and even hunger were all gone. Even the low fever that was still lingering seemed to have improved.

She said in shock, "What was that just now?"

After exhaling the mist, Guan Guan's fluffy white body seemed a little wilted, and its figure shrank a little. It jumped from Lin Man's shoulder, lost its balance and rolled on the ground.

Lin Man subconsciously reached out to catch it, and touching its body felt like touching a ball of marshmallow, so soft, so fluffy, so cool and so comfortable!

Guan Guan shook his head and stood up, saying proudly, "Humph, you're lucky. That was my spiritual energy just now!"

"Spiritual energy?" Lin Man had never heard of this word before. It sounded so mysterious and powerful.

"Spiritual energy is something very important. I won't give it to an ordinary person."

In fact, the Broken Soil had been drying up for a long time, and Guan Guan was almost unable to hold on. Especially in the past nine days, it had allowed Lin Man to enter and exit nine times, and it had also collected so much soil. Each time it consumed spiritual energy, its spiritual body was becoming increasingly thin. If it didn't replenish its spiritual energy, it would dissipate! Therefore, the spiritual energy it gave was truly important to Guan Guan!

However, the contract has been formed. With this person's blood and essence as the traction, this piece of broken land can produce spiritual energy by planting things on it. Thinking of the endless spiritual energy in the future, the white chick, which has become smaller and not so fat anymore, feels that it is still worth it.

It excitedly announced: "Okay, let's start farming!"

"Okay, let's get started!" Lin Man was also full of energy and stood up. "Uh, Guan Guan, should we water the soil first to make sure it's thoroughly soaked?"

When the chick heard this, he looked at the ground and was dumbfounded. Why was the soil so dry?

Can anything be grown in this kind of soil?

It stared at me with its two small black bean-like eyes and protested: "Didn't I say I wanted the most suitable soil for planting?"

Lin Man was also dumbfounded: "But you didn't say you wanted soil that can be used for planting right away." Disinfection and sterilization rely on the sun, so of course what you get in the end is dry soil. Who would have thought of adding water?

She stared at the chick, a bad feeling forming in her heart: "Are you out of water?"
