Chapter 4

Lin Man understood: "Thank you, I will go and help you with the soil right away." As she said that, she thought about going out, and sure enough, she disappeared on the chair.

After Lin Man left, the hazy fog around the table shrank and turned into a white, fluffy, misty ball the size of a basketball. It fell on the table like a marshmallow, bounced twice, and then fell to the ground.

It continued to shrink and deform, becoming the appearance of a chicken, except that its small wings were tucked behind its back, its head was small, and its beak was short and small, so it was obviously still a chick.

A fat chick the size of a basketball, fluffy white, and as fat as marshmallow.

"Chirp." It chirped twice, took two slow steps, looked around with its little head, and its two black bean-like eyes, the only part of its body that was not white, rolled around, and then it lay down weakly.

After losing its cover, the situation outside the table became clear. It was a piece of dry land, about 100 square meters in size. The land was cracked, and there was a ditch in the middle that divided the land into two pieces. Originally, there should have been a small stream there, and the land on both sides was very fertile, growing all kinds of magical herbs.

Not only that, this is just a piece of broken land. It should have been very big. After the great change, the chicks drifted here with the broken soil. It took many years to gather their spirits, and they were ugly.

You know, it was originally a very slender and cute fairy bird!

In short, how prosperous and majestic it was in the past, how miserable and desolate it is now. The fat chick chirped in disappointment and rubbed its white beak on the hard ground. Now it could only hope that the mortal would get some soil, clean up this place, and then plant some things to help this piece of broken land slowly recover.

Lin Man was prepared when she left the space, so when she woke up, she immediately put her hands flat, especially the bowl of rice, without letting it spill out at all.

Mother Lin had been keeping an eye on her, praying silently in her heart. Seeing her suddenly wake up with two bowls of food in her hands, she breathed a sigh of relief and helped her take the bowls: "Xiaoman, you're awake. What's going on?"

Lin Man sat up excitedly and recounted what had just happened in the space: "As long as I can get some soil, we'll have something to eat every day!"

Mother Lin was happy and worried: "Is this really reliable?" It was all too bizarre.

"Now we can only believe in that space. Even if that voice is lying to me, the worst that can happen is that we die together. At least we can have a few days of good food before we die!" After having the threat of death hanging over his head for more than ten years, Lin Man has basically lost all fear.

Mother Lin glanced at her. This child kept talking about death every day, but her words were true. They really had no other way to make a living. "So you want to go dig in the plantation?"

"Well, that place has been abandoned for a long time. Now people are thinking about leaving, and few people will pay attention to it. I will go there quietly and will not be discovered."

"Then where should we put the excavated soil to dry?"

"Isn't there a slope of earth next to the plantation? I can take it there to dry. If that doesn't work, I'll move it to the mountain. There's always room." Lin was full of confidence. In her opinion, as long as the soil over there was qualified, the rest would be physical work. She didn't believe that she couldn't do it.

It was the only way. Mother Lin looked at her legs and said, "It's a pity I can't get out of the ground. Aren't we supposed to be picking up bugs and rocks? How about you carry the soil back and I'll pick it up... No, it's easy to be discovered carrying it around like this. If I go out with you and someone sees me, it'll be an eyesore."

With Lin Man's strength, he could carry her on his back or in his arms, but she hadn't been out for many years, and if she suddenly went out and was seen by someone, it would inevitably attract attention.

"Mom, don't worry. I'll be busy first. If I can't handle it, we can find another way." Lin Man was not too worried. At worst, she could just work day and night. "Mom, let's eat together. Smell it. The rice smells so good. And the egg is still hot."

"Mom just ate. I'm not hungry. You can eat."

Lin Man knew his mother wanted to save all the food for him. After thinking for a moment, he saw that it was still dark outside and said, "I'm not hungry now. Before daybreak, I'll go to the plantation and let the voice see if the soil there is suitable. How about we save the rice and eggs for now?"

After all, this is food that will last the entire day, so you can eat it when you're hungry. It's cooler now, so it can be stored. Mother Lin nodded, "Then take the lunch box, pack it up, and put it in the box. We can't let anyone find it."

The pots and pans in their house were all broken, except for a stainless steel lunch box that had been used for more than ten years and was still in good condition, although it was quite deformed.

Lin Man poured the rice into the lunch box. There was actually not much rice in this bowl, just enough for one person. There was still space in the lunch box for three eggs. He closed the lid tightly, wrapped it in cloth, and stuffed it into the box.

"Mom, I'm leaving now."

"Be careful."

Lin Man opened the door, looked carefully, then slipped out and closed the door. Mother Lin locked the door from the inside and moved back to the bed with crutches.

It was past three in the morning and it was dark everywhere, but it was not quiet. Lin Man walked past many houses and heard noises from inside: the cries of hungry children, the cursing of adults, the sounds of rummaging through boxes and drawers, the sounds of luggage being packed, and the sounds of people gathering together to discuss leaving.

Everyone was struggling, those without abilities waiting to die like zombies, while those with abilities were anxiously seeking a way out. The entire base was filled with a suffocating despair and panic.

Lin Man was also one of them in the past, but now she has escaped from the quagmire because she has encountered a miracle.

The plantation is in the northeast corner of the base. There used to be rows of dormitories for the plantation workers and a food processing plant. However, since a few years ago, the plantation's output has been declining year by year, and the number of people here has also been decreasing year by year.

This year, the garden had no harvest and was completely abandoned.

Lin Man ran over quietly. In the dark night, there was not even a ghost here. It was so quiet and a little creepy, but Lin Man just felt happy. It was good that there was no one around.

The plantation gate was not locked, so she went in through the big iron gate, followed her memory to the field, squatted down and dug a piece of soil.

It hasn't rained for a long time, and the soil is dry. It breaks into powder when crushed.

Lin Man was worried that he wouldn't be able to pass the test, so he took out the iron spoon he usually used to dig wild vegetables from his backpack and dug down with force.

Lin Man's only advantage was that his strength suddenly increased when he was ten years old. He was as strong as two adult men. After digging for only one or two minutes, he dug a funnel-shaped pit about half a meter deep. At this point, he could feel the dampness of the soil.

She dug a little deeper and dug out a ball of soil. She picked out the stones and grass roots inside, leaving the most delicate and soft ball. She looked around. It was all pitch black and there was nothing to see. She just thought silently about the dream space in her heart.

This time she was unable to enter the space, but instead heard the voice in the space: "Have you found the soil?"

Lin Man realized that the voice was ringing directly in her mind. She whispered, "I found it. Do you think this kind of soil is suitable?"

After she finished speaking, the lump of soil in her hands disappeared.

She clenched her fist and held her breath, waiting. After a while, the ball of soil returned to her hand, and she said with a hint of disgust, "It's dry and lacks nutrients, but it's okay."

Lin Man was overjoyed: "Then I'll make something like this for you? If it's not nutritious enough, how about adding some human urine and feces..."

The base used to do this, collecting people's excrement to fertilize the fields. But this year they didn't do that anymore, and the sanitation at the base is terrible...

Before she finished speaking, the voice in the space jumped up and said, "Don't even think about it. If you do that, you won't get food from me anymore!"

Lin Man quickly shut up. It seemed that this place had mysophobia.

She stopped talking and started working.

Since she wanted to dig the soil properly, an iron shovel would definitely not work, so she ran to the warehouse where the farm tools were stored and started searching in the dark.

The warehouse was dark and smelled of mildew, but Lin was full of energy and hope, leaving no room for fear. He lit a torch with a lighter and rummaged around inside for a long time, only to find a hoe with a broken handle and a tattered shovel.

This was a pleasant surprise, as she was worried she wouldn't be able to find it. In addition to these two items, there were also a few broken baskets stacked together, which were perfect for storing soil.

She happily took these things out and started digging in the place where she had dug the soil before.

It was late at night and she was the only one here digging the soil. If someone saw her, they would probably be scared.

Lin Man worked until dawn.

At this point, she had already dug up a lot of soil. At first, she was very honest and dug it up from the bottom. But then she thought, wouldn't the soil need to be exposed to the sun to sterilize it? Once it was exposed to the sun, it would dry out. So what did it matter whether it was wet now?

She is really stupid.

So after obtaining the consent of the space, she didn't bother digging so deep.

When it was daybreak, she hurriedly collected some materials to mend the broken baskets. She couldn't find any ropes anywhere and had no time to twist hemp ropes, so she just shoveled the soil into the baskets with the broken shovel.

When the shovel was full, she would use both hands to lift the basket up and walk away.

There was a slope next to the plantation, so she put the basket up there. The slope of that half of the slope faced the sun, so the sunlight was particularly good. There was also a cement slope that had been built when conditions were better, which was used to dry rice and other things. Now that Lin Man had cleaned it up, it was just right for drying the soil.

After moving one basket up, she hurried down to shovel the second basket, and then continued moving.

After moving thirty baskets, the sun was already high in the sky and the noise in the base was getting louder.

For fear of being seen, she stopped digging and transporting the soil and ran to the other side of the slope to flatten the soil. She picked out and threw away the big rocks, plastic papers, grass roots, tree roots, etc., and broke up the big clods of soil.
