Chapter 116 In-depth Talk in the Car

Chapter 116 In-depth Talk in the Car

"Since I can't stop your investigation, I can only follow behind and protect your safety," Chu Zhen said calmly.

“When you were in the alley, I saw someone walking that way. I deliberately walked over there and looked inside. Luckily you were smart. Later, you went into that person's house. I followed you until the older sister saw you off to the car. I only overtook you when we were almost in the city. I followed you the whole way, and you didn't even notice. What if I were a bad guy?”

"There's no such thing as 'what if,' is there?"

From Chu Zhen's words, I could tell that he was both blaming and worried.

"Master Chu, it's been so long since we had a late-night snack! How about we go get some skewers?"

Even though he had a dark expression, I knew he would definitely do as I said.

Sure enough, the car stopped in front of the skewers restaurant.

"It's been so long since you've been here, you two are such busy people." The proprietress greeted us warmly as soon as she saw us.

"You're here today, same as always~"

Now Chu Zhen almost always cooks at home and rarely eats out. However, she still misses the taste of skewers from time to time. I've also tamed Chu Zhen so that she no longer only eats mushrooms; she can also enjoy lamb kidneys and other similar dishes.

Having been in the windy area for so long, I felt a chill and dampness creeping into my body. After eating a few spicy dishes, I felt warmer instantly. I ate more than a dozen skewers in a row, until Chu Zhen finally couldn't stand it anymore and took away the dipping sauce in front of me.

"The broth is already spicy, so don't add any more dipping sauce."

"Then it won't taste good anymore~"

"It's bad for your stomach and intestines. You can't afford any accidents right now. If anything happens to you, it will only make things worse for Huang Yanyan."

That's true. I can't afford any mistakes right now. Whenever I'm in trouble, it's either Chu Zhen or Huang Yanyan who always protect me. Now, although I can't stand in front of Yanyan to shield her from anything, I still have to do a good job behind the scenes.

"Oh, you've got quite the refined taste, eating skewers and kidneys. Looks like you're just putting on an act, aren't you? I know a doctor, want me to introduce you?"

He Feng's sudden appearance made me lose my appetite, and he sat down next to me without our permission.

“I’m in great shape, come with me. You know what, Chu Zhen has good taste. Even with a scar on your face, it doesn’t affect your looks at all.” He Feng said, reaching out to hit my shoulder. Chu Zhen hit He Feng’s hand with a chopstick. When He Feng cried out in pain, he promptly pulled me to his side.

"Chu Zhen, don't think you're so high and mighty. To put it bluntly, you're just a lousy producer at a TV station. If I want you to leave, it's a piece of cake." He Feng, feeling hurt, lost his temper.

"Really? Then you can try and see if I lose my job first or you lose everything you have now." Chu Zhen didn't even glance at him, said this, and pulled me away.

"Chu Zhen, we'll see. Let me tell you, unless you keep a close eye on your woman, another scar will appear on the other side of her face." He Feng said madly from behind. We ignored him completely and left.

In the car, Chu Zhen held my left hand tightly with his right hand the whole time, without saying a word. When we arrived at the underground parking garage, Chu Zhen stopped the car, leaned on the steering wheel, and after about ten minutes, he looked up at me with a complex emotion in his eyes that I couldn't decipher. In all the years I've known Chu Zhen, this was the first time I'd seen such a look in his eyes, and I felt a little nervous.

"Honey, what's wrong?"

"Lin Dang, do you believe me?" Chu Zhen's voice was a little hoarse. Had he been crying for the ten minutes he had been burying his head in his hands?

"I believe you. Maybe I had doubts before, but that's all in the past. Now I believe you unconditionally." I gave him a sweet smile, the kind of smile he liked.

Chu Zhen remained silent, then reached out and gently placed my head on his shoulder. His emotions seemed unusual; could it be because of what He Feng had just said?

"Chu Zhen, do you remember when I was an intern, I rescued a little girl from a fire?"

"Hmm~"

"Being a journalist has always been my dream. From the moment I chose this major, I was fully prepared. I'm lucky to have met you. You've always been there for me during my adventures, but that also means I've never been able to independently follow up on a news story. Actually, what I've accomplished the most over the years is teaching in mountainous areas. I went deep into the lives of those left-behind children and elderly people, experiencing their lives firsthand. It was because of that that I wrote that report, which is my greatest achievement in my career so far. But you know what? I want more than that. I want to report on more positive social energy and expose the hidden cancers. I want to be a part of all of this, instead of always being under your protection."

"Just like that little girl, even though I knew it was dangerous, I would do anything to save her. That's a positive energy transmission, don't you think? So, I'm prepared to face all possible dangers. Without you, I would have to face all of this alone, right?"

"Lin Dang, but all the suffering you've endured is because of me." Chu Zhen touched the scar on my face, her eyes filled with heartache.

"It's not because of you. Even without you, I would still have done the investigation on food safety. Besides, this investigation was a task assigned to me by my supervisor when I was at the newspaper. You were assisting me, so don't blame yourself."

Chu Zhen had a heavy burden on his heart. I saw a long-lost smile on his face the day Li Guoqiang was sentenced. But when I learned that Amy had returned to China and was hanging out with He Feng, he reverted to his aloof demeanor, making it impossible to read his emotions.

"I have you to protect me, and I will protect myself. Nothing like what happened before will happen again." I looked at Chu Zhen firmly. He seemed to understand my thoughts and kissed my scar.

Yes, I've always been an independent person, but after meeting Chu Zhen, I became overly dependent on him. I always felt that Chu Zhen would appear out of nowhere in times of danger, and these seemingly dramatic scenarios often actually happened. He did appear when I needed him most. I shouldn't be like this; this excessive emotional dependence has made me increasingly stray from my original intentions.

Back home, I don't know if the lamb kidneys really worked, or if it was because of our deep conversation in the car, or if I didn't refuse Chu Zhen's repeated requests. We hadn't been intimate for a long time due to the intense tension we'd been under. But I felt that Chu Zhen wanted me to understand his heart, his heart that wanted to protect me, support me, and stand by my side to fight alongside me forever.
