Chapter Seven: Incompatible Birth Dates

Chapter Seven: Incompatible Birth Dates

"What would you like to eat? It's on me."

"Large fries, large popcorn chicken, extra packets of ketchup, and a hot milk, please!"

"You're not being polite at all!"

"The boss is treating, I can't refuse." I smiled.

"Sharp-tongued." After saying that, Chu Zhen went to order food. There were some people sitting in KFC at this time, but most of them hadn't ordered anything.

"What are they doing here in the middle of the night?"

"So, these are your interviewees."

Speechless, I dug a hole for myself.

I looked around and a little girl caught my attention. She might be older than me, but in my eyes, I like to define any girl as a little girl, as it makes me seem more mature.

"Hello, may I sit across from you?" I went up to greet him and suddenly noticed that his eyes were swollen like walnuts.

"Excuse me, is something wrong?" Out of professional ethics, I continued to ask, though I didn't want to use this as material.

"What a jerk!" the girl muttered angrily. "He just left without looking back. Doesn't he worry about me getting into trouble in the dark?"

It was obvious that she was going through a breakup, while I had absolutely no experience with that.

"Since he's a jerk, try to think positively and stop crying. Some people are gone and not worth remembering. You might find that someone better will appear the next time you look up."

"What love, what feelings, it's all a fucking lie." The girl tore the tissue in front of her into shreds. If the "scumbag" she was talking about were here, he would probably be torn to pieces.

"The milk's getting cold, come and drink it!" Chu Zhen walked up to me and lifted me up like a puppy. Hearing her voice, the girl looked up, and I saw a glint of light flash in her eyes.

"Hello, handsome, is this your friend?" The girl rubbed her eyes, probably trying to cover up the traces of her recent crying.

"No, I'm his subordinate, this is my boss," I explained. I was certain that my previous, weak words of comfort had come true; in that instant when she looked up, the girl seemed to have fallen in love again.

I quietly returned to my seat, giving them enough private space. The milk was delicious; I realized for the first time that KFC wasn't just good at making soy milk.

"You think you've gotten away with this?" Just as I was smugly eating my fries, the cold voice came again.

"I'm sorry, this really can't be used as material. We can't just make other people's relationship issues public!"

Do you know what I mean?

What do you mean?

"Lin Dang, go to work as usual during the day tomorrow, and wait for me at the same place at midnight. If you are late, you will bear the consequences."

"Chu Zhen, your working hours are completely in violation of the labor law."

"So, do you want a salary?"

"You're ruthless." I tore open a bag of ketchup with my mouth, wanting to squeeze it all over his face, but I was too forceful, and the ketchup gushed out, spraying right onto my glasses.

I've concluded that Chu Zhen and I are simply incompatible. At this moment, I've completely given up any hope of a relationship, and all my fantasies have vanished.

"Let's go to work together after breakfast." We sat in KFC in relative silence until four o'clock. At this time of summer, it was already getting light outside.

"I have to say, it's a bit chilly going out this early in the morning!" I shivered.

"Are you cold?"

"No, it's not cold!"

City A is a city with a strong sense of life, quite suitable for retirement. I happen to be a person with no desires or ambitions, and I just want to live a carefree life in this city until I die. Not long after I went out, I saw a long line in front of the breakfast shop, mostly elderly people, and people jogging along the street from time to time.

One ordered a bowl of soy milk, two fried dough sticks, and a poached egg, while Chu Zhen ordered two steamed buns and a bowl of porridge.

Do you like soy milk?

"Yes, my family was poor when I was a child, and we could only drink soy milk when we made tofu during the Chinese New Year. But the soy milk now tastes different from what I remember; it has a metallic, machine-like flavor."

"Poor? I can't tell. That little bag of yours is worth at least two months' salary for a white-collar worker these days."

"You mean this bag? My best friend gave it to me. She's a rich kid, but a different kind of rich kid. Oh, you know about these things? Do you often give your girlfriends gifts?"

"I don't have a girlfriend."

"Really? You're not exactly young anymore, and you're good-looking and wealthy, how come you don't have a girlfriend?" What I really meant was, "A weirdo like you, it's no wonder you don't have a girlfriend."

Do I look big?

"No, but he's older than me, and the colors of your clothes are too dark. Although I would say they're mature, they make you look older." These were her true feelings.

"Eat quickly, then you can go to work!"

"Teacher Chu, it'll be at most 5 o'clock after we finish eating. It's only a half-hour walk to the radio station. Isn't that too early?"

"It's not early; even a slow bird has to fly first."
