Chapter Seventy-Six: Unexpected Joy
Do you remember the first New Year's Eve of the year we met?
"Yeah, that was the first time I didn't spend New Year's Eve with my family, but now that I think about it, I was with my family back then." I snuggled up to Chu Zhen's shoulder.
"At that time, I thought this girl had a good attitude. She could spend the New Year alone and still be so optimistic."
"And now, what do you think of the girl back then?"
"As long as you're by my side, you'll always be that little girl, running like a kangaroo. I used to think I was a bit too tall, but I'm actually quite glad I have long legs, otherwise I really wouldn't be able to keep up with you. Tell me, why did you run away as soon as you saw me back then?"
"I'm a student, and you're a working professional, plus you're too handsome. Men with your looks are usually labeled as scumbags, especially since you always seem to be haunting me." I thought back to the time when I first met Chu Zhen. The coincidences made me wonder, but now I realize it was all fate. Even without that instant attraction at the hospital entrance, we would have met in some other situation.
The elders were playing cards and couldn't stop for a while. Chu Zhen and I chatted for a bit and got a little carried away, so we said goodbye to the elders and went upstairs to rest.
"Lin Dang, are you on your period?" Halfway through making love, there was a sudden smell of blood. Sure enough, there was blood on the bed, the bright red blood standing out against the silver-gray sheets.
"Do you have any of those at home?" I never expected to get my period; I don't think I've had it since I was discharged from the hospital.
"Then I'll go buy it. You wait for me at home." Just as Chu Zhen was about to leave, I experienced a sharp, sharp pain in my lower abdomen.
"Chu Zhen, it hurts." I pressed my hand against my stomach. Although I had experienced menstrual cramps before, I had never felt this way before.
"No, we have to go straight to the hospital." Without saying a word, Chu Zhen dressed me, carried me downstairs, and my parents became anxious when they saw my pale face and the sweat on my forehead. They all went to the hospital with me.
"How can you young people be so impatient? No sex for three months! Do you think this is just a joke? Didn't the doctor tell you?" After looking at the test results, the doctor immediately started scolding Chu Zhen, while Chu Zhen and I were both completely bewildered.
"Doctor, how is she now? Is it serious?" Even after being spoken to like that, the usually arrogant Chu Zhen still asked the doctor about my condition, putting away all her haughtiness.
"Thankfully, the baby is safe. But you must rest in bed after you get home. In your case, you may need to rest even after three months. I'll prescribe some medication to help maintain the pregnancy. Just take it on time. Remember, you absolutely cannot have sex."
"The child?" Chu Zhen and I exclaimed at the same time.
"What? You didn't know you were pregnant?"
"My period has been late for a while, but I thought it was because of the medication I took when I was hospitalized. Since I didn't feel anything unusual, I didn't pay much attention to it."
"I've never met such clueless parents before. You didn't even know you were pregnant." The doctor rolled his eyes at us.
"Doctor, please tell me about the medication you prescribe, and any precautions you may have. Also, by the way, do I need to have a prenatal checkup? Are there any other related matters? Could you please tell me all of that?" Chu Zhen's initial surprise turned into excitement, and she couldn't hide the smile on her face.
"Oh, how foolish of you! Didn't you have any unusual symptoms before? Like, drowsiness? Vomiting?"
"I do feel a bit sleepy, but I think it's just because I'm too tired. I haven't been vomiting though." If I were vomiting, I might really start to wonder if I'm pregnant, but I don't seem to have any other symptoms.
"Everyone's pregnancy symptoms are different. Go downstairs to get your medication. Come back for regular prenatal checkups. And please, absolutely no sexual intercourse."
"Okay, thank you, doctor!" Chu Zhen's mouth was practically stretched to her ears in a wide grin.
I had just stood up from the consultation chair when Chu Zhen picked me up in his arms.
"Put it down, this is a hospital." I felt a little embarrassed; the doctor was still there.
"The doctor said you need to rest more. From now on, I'll be your legs, and you can do whatever you want with me." Chu Zhen said, then kissed me.
"Honey, what happened? What did the doctor say?" As soon as I stepped outside, everyone was waiting at the door.
"I'm a dad now!" Chu Zhen suddenly exclaimed loudly. It was New Year's Eve, and there were almost no people in the hospital, so his voice echoed in the corridor.
"Really? I'm going to be a great-grandmother! Oh my, Dang'er, you're such a great contributor to our Chu family!" Grandma excitedly reached out to touch my belly.
It was clear that my parents and Professor Huang were also very happy, but they didn't show it too obviously here. However, they kept asking Chu Zhen to hold me carefully, and I suddenly became the darling of the group, the national treasure.
Originally, I was supposed to be on duty in the first year of junior high, but I couldn't go. Chu Zhen made a phone call to the director, and it was the first time I realized that the director and Professor Huang were classmates. He got my vacation sorted out.
"Ugh, I'm so frustrated with my job. I have to take leave every few days!" Today, I went straight to bed. Chu Zhen, taking advantage of the fact that he was taking care of me, also stayed in bed and kept touching my belly, feeling the new life growing inside me.
"Resign from your job at the newspaper!" Chu Zhen suddenly said.
"Why?"
"Go to the TV station. You performed very well during your internship there, and I have the final say in hiring for my program. I can take care of you at all times."
"Let me think about it!" Actually, I was a little hesitant. I could work in journalism, whether it was print media, television media, or even online media. But taking leave every now and then was really inconvenient. Besides, Amy was still working at the newspaper. I'm not good at interpersonal communication, and working with Amy always made me uncomfortable.
"Don't think about it anymore, have some fruit~" Chu Zhen peeled a grape and put it in my mouth.
"How come there are grapes in this world?"
"I'll always find a way to get you what you want to eat. Eat up, I've heard that if pregnant women eat grapes, their babies will have big eyes."
"Lin Dang, your blood sugar is high, so you can't eat too much. Here are some cherry and cherries, which I just bought this morning. They're very fresh. By the way, what would you like for lunch? I'll make it for you." Professor Huang brought up more fruit.
"Auntie, no need." I felt genuinely embarrassed, as someone had come up to me every half hour all morning to offer their concern.
"Mom, please don't keep coming up here. I'm right here. I can do whatever Lin Dang wants to eat or do."
"Alright, you guys rest now. Just call me if you need anything."
"Chu Zhen, I'm so lucky!"
"I'm lucky to have met you, and now we're having our daughter." Chu Zhen kept insisting that the baby in my belly was a girl.
