Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Night of the First Snow
The first snow this year came exceptionally early. On Christmas Eve, Huang Yanyan and I were enjoying the romantic artificial snowfall outside the mall when the sudden snowfall excited everyone in the square. In recent years, celebrating Western holidays has become a trend, and businesses have used this day as an excuse for discounts. The mall was mostly filled with young couples. Chu Zhen was supposed to accompany me, but she had an interview and couldn't come, so Huang Yanyan and I went out to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
"Let's go back and have some fried chicken and beer," Huang Yanyan said on a whim.
"good!"
We immediately agreed to go, so we ordered a large portion of fried chicken and two pitchers of draft beer. However, both places were packed with people. Korean dramas have truly brainwashed a generation.
"I must eat fried chicken and drink beer with my loved one when the first snow falls," Huang Yanyan said thoughtfully, gazing out the window.
"Aren't you with the person you love right now?"
Sitting on the balcony, gazing at the lights of thousands of homes outside, watching the snowflakes fluttering in the sky, accompanied by fried chicken and beer, is truly a romantic experience.
"You are the person I love most." Yan Yan pressed her oily lips against my face.
"Yeah, you're someone I cherish too." I sensed something was off about Huang Yanyan's tone. I was having a beer and a few pieces of fried chicken, while she was having a beer and a piece of fried chicken. I had a feeling this girl would get drunk again today.
"It's snowing! I miss you!" Chu Zhen sent a message with a picture of snow falling under a streetlamp.
"I miss you too!" I texted a drunken Huang Yanyan, actually telling him that even though I missed him terribly, I couldn't abandon him right now.
Yan Yan was quiet and didn't say anything. She just looked out the window and drank her beer. I regretted it now. Why did we open the first bottle of beer? Now Yan Yan is practically an alcoholic.
"Is that Chu Zhen?" The doorbell rang, seemingly pulling Huang Yanyan out of her drunken stupor.
"Maybe!" I got up to open the door. Besides delivery drivers, only Chu Zhen comes over here.
"What brings you here?" To my surprise, Chen Weiqi was the one who greeted me when I opened the door.
"Chu Zhen is downstairs, I've come to keep Huang Yanyan company." Chen Weiqi's words were not as gentle as before, and contained some of Chu Zhen's coldness.
"Okay, she's drunk. Get her some honey water to drink," I said, and left immediately.
Downstairs, Chu Zhen stood outside the door with his back to me, arms outstretched, snowflakes falling into his palms, seemingly waiting for them to slowly melt. This side of Chu Zhen captivated me; I quietly watched his retreating figure.
"What are you doing? What are you spacing out for?" Chu Zhen turned around and saw me, and said.
"How can you be so handsome? I'm suddenly afraid someone will steal you away." I ran over, hugged Chu Zhen, and looked up at him, saying in a coquettish tone.
"Then you should keep a close eye on yourself. Aren't you cold wearing so little?" Chu Zhen looked at me with tender eyes.
"It's not cold, I'm not cold at all when I'm with you." I rarely act coquettishly, and I seldom say sentimental things. I don't know if it's because this is the first snowfall I've experienced with Chu Zhen, but I actually took the initiative to say it.
"Did you drink too much too?"
"No, I only had a few sips. By the way, did you send Chen Weiqi over?"
"Of course, he has to make up for the bad karma he created himself. I don't want anyone to affect my date with my woman."
"No wonder his face was colder than this freezing weather." I smiled.
Chu Zhen held my hand, and we walked aimlessly. We seemed to have gotten used to this kind of strolling around the streets. Walking in the snow, that's exactly what we were like!
"Achoo~" I finally couldn't hold it in and sneezed.
"Are you cold? It's the dead of winter, and you're wearing a woolen coat. How can you not be cold?" Chu Zhen pulled me into his arms.
"With this heavy snowfall, how many people do you see wandering around outside like us?" I said.
"Lin Dang, can't you be a little more romantic? This is just aimless wandering around. Isn't it romantic?" Chu Zhen looked at me with a questioning expression.
"Romantic?" To be honest, I've never thought that snow is a romantic thing, unless it's a thick layer of snow combined with a snowball fight, then that's the meaning of snow.
"Indeed, you're single by choice," Chu Zhen said with a hint of helplessness.
"Christmas Eve abroad must be very grand, just like Chinese New Year in China!" I started a conversation, since today is Christmas Eve. I remember back in college, apart from me and Huang Yanyan, my other two roommates were always in relationships, and we would start thinking about what gifts to give them a month in advance for this kind of holiday.
"I don't feel anything. I rarely stay outside. Do you know how unsafe it is abroad?"
"I've never been abroad, how would I know all that? But I do have quite a few personal shoppers on WeChat, and the Christmas promotions are the best."
"I'm not sure. Just tell me what you need next time. I have a lot of friends in the US who can help you buy it."
"Chu Zhen, I suddenly thought of a way to get rich! I can become a personal shopper and have your friend buy things for me. We can split the profits."
Chu Zhen probably didn't expect me to think so fast, and he was a little stunned.
"Lin Dang, you're such a spoilsport. First of all, you described such a romantic stroll in the snow as just aimless wandering. Secondly, I wanted to use my connections to do you a favor, but all you were thinking about was how to make money. Can't you even consider your boyfriend's feelings?"
"What do you think Chen Weiqi and Huang Yanyan are doing now?"
"Don't change the subject, I don't care what they're doing." This tactic was no longer working on Chu Zhen.
"Hmm~ Actually, this is quite romantic. Look, the snowflakes are falling, isn't it romantic~"
"Can you stop being so perfunctory?"
I turned around and stood on tiptoe. Who said height difference is cute? It's a fatal flaw. I wanted to kiss Chu Zhen, but I ended up kissing his chin. This is really embarrassing.
"I can handle this~" Chu Zhen grinned lecherously, lowered his head, and kissed me. The kiss was deep and domineering, as if he wanted to devour me. I cooperated, enjoying the thrill Chu Zhen brought me. Snowflakes kept falling on us, and we stood like snowmen under the night sky.
"Was it romantic?" After a long while, Chu Zhen pulled away from my lips and asked me softly.
"Mmm~" I nodded shyly. Since I met Chu Zhen, this kiss seemed to have exhausted all our skills. If I could, I selfishly hoped that this kiss could last forever.
"Finally, I feel the conquering desire of a boyfriend!" Chu Zhen's wicked smile was like the boasting after a successful conspiracy.
"Boring~" I said, but my heart was fluttering. This kiss on a snowy Christmas Eve is something I'll cherish for a lifetime.
Chu Zhen wanted me to go to his place, but considering that Huang Yanyan was drunk, I was still a little worried about her relationship with Chen Weiqi. Sometimes this guy talks a lot when he's drunk and can complain about Chen Weiqi from beginning to end.
Back at their lodgings, Huang Yanyan was already lying on the sofa, while Chen Weiqi sat in a rocking chair beside her.
"Thank you for your hard work~" I greeted him awkwardly. Chu Zhen's actions were indeed a bit unkind.
"Don't ask me for these kinds of jobs again." Chen Weiqi said and left. This was the first time I had seen Chen Weiqi so impolite and cold. It must have been difficult for Yan Yan to accept such an attitude.
