Chapter Twenty: Happy New Year
That night, we counted down together and went downstairs to set off fireworks. It was the most special New Year's Eve I'd ever had in my twenty-odd years. Chu Zhen was no longer aloof; he revealed a boyish smile.
"Don't you need to go home to visit relatives?" If he had eaten his family reunion dinner last night before coming to keep me company, then there's no reason for him to stay here on the first day of the new year.
"I don't like visiting relatives."
"Yeah, I'm actually quite grateful to my parents this time. They went on vacation, so I had a legitimate reason not to go home. Otherwise, I would definitely have to face all sorts of questions from my aunts and uncles, like, 'Do you have a boyfriend? When can we get your wedding candy?'"
"How old are you? Why are your family so eager for you to get married?"
"Girls, their families always hope they can find a good home as soon as possible. In the countryside, most girls my age are already married. Luckily, my parents were farsighted and bought a house in the city when I was young. You're so old now, your family must be urging you to get married too!"
"More or less!"
Have you ever had a girlfriend before?
"No, I don't really like foreigners. I'd rather find a pure-blooded Chinese person." That's true. He's been living abroad all his life. Even if there are international students, there probably aren't many, let alone someone he likes.
"What about you? Have you ever been in love?"
"Of course, how could a girl like me not have been in a relationship? But we all broke up." I smiled.
"They've all been divided up? Looks like quite a few!" Chu Zhen's tone was somewhat sarcastic.
"Of course, I remember when I was around ten years old, I fell in love with Song Seung-heon, but later I gradually fell in love with Hu Ge. There were some others in between, but I don't remember them very well. Oh, right, recently I've become obsessed with William Chan. He's pretty handsome, isn't he!"
You mean a celebrity, right?
"You've never heard of any of these names?"
"Besides Hu Ge, I don't know much about the others."
That makes sense. How could a grown man possibly be a fan of celebrities? Besides, like repels like, so the only goddesses he knows are probably Liu Yifei.
"How do you plan to spend today?" Chu Zhen switched to her tender side again.
"Let's just wander around. It's my first time spending Chinese New Year in another city. Let's see what it's like to celebrate here."
"Then I'll go with you and be your tour guide."
"You'll be my tour guide?"
“I’ve lived in this city for over ten years, and I can’t be your tour guide anymore.”
"Brother, do you know how much things have changed over the years? In the four years I've been at university in City A, everything has changed dramatically."
"Hmm, that's a good title. I'll give you a red envelope later!"
"Great! Happy New Year, brother! Wishing you prosperity and good fortune! Give me a red envelope!"
"I haven't been a big brother for many years, but if you call me 'brother,' I'll give you a big red envelope."
"Don't make me yell at you during the New Year!"
"Girls should pay attention to their image and not use foul language."
Do you know what my special talent is?
"What?"
"Insulting without using foul language! Haha~"
Unexpectedly, the new year started like this for us, but it was also the happiest time for Chu Zhen and me so far.
Knowing that Chu Zhen was spending the New Year with me, Huang Yanyan didn't come over, saying she wanted to give us some private space. She didn't come until the fifth day of the Lunar New Year. During those days, I spent almost every day with Chu Zhen, visiting all the big and small attractions in City A.
"How romantic! When will Chen Weiqi and I be able to be like you two?" Huang Yanyan felt envious but also desperate. Chen Weiqi was like a stone, impossible to mold.
"What do you think Chu Zhen really feels about me?" I don't understand myself anymore. In the past few days, we've been friends, but it seems more like a couple. Many strangers have misunderstood our relationship, but Chu Zhen hasn't explained.
"He must have fallen for you."
"So when do you think he started liking me?"
"It must have been from the moment we met, otherwise it would be too much of a coincidence between you two. I think all these encounters were a setup on his part. Lin Dang, if it really was a setup, you shouldn't blame him, you should be happy."
I don't know when Chu Zhen fell in love with me, but I know that when he hugged me from behind and wrapped us in his down jacket, I was already smitten.
