Chapter 129 Details of Daily Life
"Call me when you get there. I've already contacted a friend there, and he'll pick you up at the airport."
Actually, a few days ago, Chu Zhen contacted his friends in the United States, and my accommodation was already arranged. Almost everything for my trip to the United States was arranged for me.
"Yes, you need to take good care of An'an and Huanhuan, as well as Mom and Dad, and Grandma at home."
"Don't worry about things at home. Take good care of yourself, and I'll come see you when I have time."
Separation is inevitable. The reason I was separated from Chu Zhen for so long before was because of awkwardness, but this time it's completely different. I feel more reluctant and worried.
USA.
Upon landing at New York Airport, I looked around and didn't see a single familiar face; everyone was a foreigner. I searched through the crowd for a sign with my name on it, and finally, a blonde, blue-eyed woman held up a sign that read "Lin Dang." It must have been difficult for her; her Chinese handwriting was rather poor.
"Hello, I'm Lin Dang."
"Hi, Lin Dang, my name is Vera."
Vera is very tall with long, slightly wavy hair and striking features; she is a stunning beauty. She was Chu Zhen's former colleague and is now the editor-in-chief of a local newspaper.
"Lin Dang, my Chinese is alright, you can speak Chinese with me." Although it was a bit awkward, the pronunciation was still very clear.
"Okay, thank you for your help~"
"It's okay, let's go. We'll be roommates for a while."
Vera lives in a detached villa, far from the city center. The villa is surrounded by endless lawns. The interior decoration is different from the American style I am used to; it is more like a modern minimalist style in China. However, the first thing that catches the eye upon entering the house is a huge row of bookshelves, which are filled to the brim.
“I’ve loved reading since I was little, so I have a lot of books,” Vera said with a smile when she saw my surprised expression.
"That's a good habit," I smiled.
“My room is on the first floor, and yours is on the second floor. Both rooms have bathrooms, and there’s also a guest bathroom. However, my place is in a remote location, and few people come here. You’re the first person I’ve ever lived with, even though you’re a woman,” Vera said with a hint of regret. Clearly, she was joking.
I put my luggage away, grabbed a change of clothes, and took a shower. I was really tired after the long journey.
"Lin Dang, come down and have something to eat."
Vera was a very tasteful girl. On the pure white marble table were two steaks, two glasses of red wine, and even candles.
"It tastes good~" I took a bite, and it turned out to be the medium-rare I like.
"Don't you think this makes the beef look tough?" Vera looked at me incredulously. I looked at the steak on her knife and fork; it was still bloody.
"Huh?" I was a little puzzled. Wasn't this what she fried?
"Chu Zhen sent me an email with a detailed list of all your preferences and things to be mindful of in your daily life. Oh, right, does he mean you can't drink alcohol? But I think hot milk with steak would make the meal taste bland, so having a little red wine with female friends should be fine, right?"
All I knew was that Chu Zhen had contacted Vera, but I never expected her to share such details about her life.
"Oh no." I then realized that my phone was off on the plane and I came straight here with Vera after landing, and it still hasn't been turned on.
"Chu Zhen called while you were showering, but he didn't call your cell phone because he was afraid you were resting," Vera said calmly, seeing my expression, though her tone was full of envy.
"I'm tired today, get some rest, call me when you get up." A short text message, but it was so heartwarming.
"I always thought Chu Zhen got married because of Chinese tradition. After he sent me an email, I realized that he treated you differently. I was wondering what kind of woman was worth him doing this for. After meeting you, I am sure that a woman like you deserves to be treated this way."
What kind of woman am I?
"Traditional Chinese women are confident and generous at heart, unwilling to be inferior to others, and want to stand shoulder to shoulder with men."
"So that's what I am~" I smiled. I never thought about how others saw me. For me, I have always stuck to my dream. No matter how many changes have occurred around me, my dream has never changed. And Chu Zhen knows this deeply and supports me unconditionally.
After chatting with Vera for a while, I went upstairs to rest. I really didn't want to tell Vera the whole story of how Chu Zhen and I met, fell in love, got married, and had children. Our experience was too different from other couples', and I didn't like telling our story to others like it was a regular story.
"Are you up yet?" Chu Zhen's phone rang before the alarm clock struck, early in the morning.
"Get ready!"
"Did you get enough rest?"
"Hmm, that's good~"
"Wife~"
"Um?"
I miss you~
I was feeling really sleepy, but his last sentence completely woke me up. It hasn't been that long, and I never realized he was so clingy!
"It feels like the first time we've been apart for so long."
"Didn't we separate before?"
"It's different. At least you're close to me, and I can go there anytime. But now, even if I wanted to go, it would take more than ten hours by plane. That's so unbearable!"
"Okay, okay, I need to wash up. I have to go to school to register soon." If I didn't end this call, Chu Zhen would definitely keep calling all day. Without waiting for a reply, I hung up the phone.
Thankfully, everything went smoothly, and I had fellow students from China studying with me, so I didn't feel out of place. Vera speaks good Chinese, but not everyone speaks English, and at that moment, I truly realized the importance of English.
"Lin Dang, let's go shopping. Many designer bags are much cheaper here~" On my day off, Vera dragged me out of bed early in the morning. I've never changed my habit of sleeping in late. I never expected that Vera, a single woman, could have a schedule that rivals that of an old lady in China.
"I'm not interested in bags, I just want to drift off to sleep."
"Duke of Zhou? Who is that?"
Okay, I overestimated Vera's knowledge of Chinese culture. Her questions amused me and woke me up. After breakfast, we headed straight to the mall.
Women are powerless against handbags, but I seem to be an exception. My designer bags were either gifts from Huang Yanyan or Chu Zhen; I've never bought any for myself. However, Vera lost her composure when it came to bags, wanting to own every single one.
"Which one?" Vera gestured with three bags in front of me, but I honestly couldn't tell the difference.
“This one.” I pointed to one at random, but in the end Vera not only took my suggestion, but also took two other ones with her. The prices were indeed a little cheaper than in domestic stores, but it was still a large sum of money.
