Chapter 124 Nighttime Journey to the Disaster Area
I sat down on the sofa. Grandma was watching the news. She must have been thinking about Chu Zhen all along. After all, Chu Zhen was the only son in the family and the apple of her eye.
"Dang'er, it's alright. Take good care of the baby in your belly." Grandma sat down next to me and took my hand. "Since Zhen'er started this industry, I've been prepared for everything, both the good and the bad. But I believe that Zhen'er will be fine."
"Yes, I believe him. He never goes back on his word."
The news reports showed rescue teams searching the collapsed area, with injured and dead being carried out on stretchers every now and then. Chu Zhen wasn't among them, but even though he was covered in mud, I could still recognize him at a glance. Chu Zhen knew the terrain there very well; he'd be alright, I kept reassuring myself.
On the third day, there was still no news from Chu Zhen.
On the fourth day, there was still no news of Chu Zhen.
"Wang Sihong, can I do you a favor?"
I couldn't hold back any longer and called Wang Sihong.
"What's wrong? What happened?"
"Can you take me to the disaster area?"
I know my request is a bit excessive, but I can't let go of Chu Zhen. At first, I firmly believed that Chu Zhen was alright, but four days have passed and there has been no news. I haven't slept at night, and even when I do manage to fall asleep briefly, I'm plagued by nightmares.
"What's wrong? Is Chu Zhen in the disaster area?" Wang Sihong immediately understood.
"Something happened to Chu Zhen. I have no news of Chu Zhen. Can you take me there?"
"No, you're pregnant right now. It's been raining heavily there. Even for a normal person, let alone someone who's pregnant, the roads there are very difficult to navigate."
"Please, I have no news of Chu Zhen. I want to go find him. Besides, I'm quite far along in my pregnancy now, and the pregnancy is stable. It'll be alright." All the people I could rely on have gone to the disaster area, and I have no news of any of them. Now, the only person I can count on is Wang Sihong.
"Lin Dang, this is too dangerous!"
Please, take me there!
I cried. It was the first time I had cried in a long time. I released all the emotions I had been suppressing in front of my mother and Professor Huang.
"Let me think about it~" Wang Sihong on the other end of the phone hesitated, perhaps because he heard me crying.
"Could you come over tonight? Contact me when you get downstairs. I'll come out after my mom and the others have fallen asleep."
"Okay~" The person on the other end of the phone hesitated for a moment before finally agreeing.
After hanging up the phone, I packed some personal belongings, wrote a note to my mother and Professor Huang, and waited for Wang Sihong to come over.
Sure enough, Wang Sihong arrived downstairs late at night, but surprisingly, he was accompanied by a doctor.
"This is an obstetrician and gynecologist in City A, and also a friend of mine. It's a long way away, and I'm afraid something might happen."
Wang Sihong really thought things through. However, this doctor looks to be about my age. The fact that he was able to go to the disaster area with me means that he must be an extraordinary friend.
"I'm sorry to bother you~"
"It's alright, Sihong's friends are my friends. By the way, my name is Lin Min, we share the same surname. Maybe we were even related in our ancestors' lineage." Lin Min was quite talkative.
Wang Sihong hired a driver to drive us there. After all, we had to travel on mountain roads, so it was necessary to find an experienced driver. All I could think about on the way was Chu Zhen. Apart from being a little hungry, I didn't feel anything else. We finally arrived at the disaster area around 6 a.m. Today was better, but there were still many puddles and scattered rocks on the road.
"The road ahead is dangerous; vehicles cannot proceed." We were stopped at the checkpoint.
Wang Sihong got out of the car, showed his identification, and said something else. After a while, a military vehicle arrived, and we were put into the vehicle.
The journey was bumpy, and the baby in my belly probably felt it too, kicking my stomach and turning over. Plus, I had been eating bread the whole way, so I felt nauseous and wanted to vomit.
"Lin Dang, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Lin Min noticed my unusual behavior.
"It's nothing, just nausea, probably from the bumpy ride."
"The rain just stopped today, and now this is the only road left for delivering supplies from outside. With so many vehicles coming and going, it's hard to drive. But how did you get here with such a big belly? Do you have any family here?" The driver was probably a soldier.
"Hmm~" The closer I get, the more uneasy I feel. Perhaps, the lack of news about Chu Zhen makes me more hopeful.
"The rescue team from City A is just ahead. Please bear with it a little longer."
After getting off the bus, everyone was busy running around, and no one noticed us. The tents of the medical team and the TV station were placed together, and there was another tent next to them, which should have been used to store some supplies.
"Lin Dang, what brings you here?"
If it weren't for that familiar voice, I really wouldn't have recognized that this disheveled person was Song Ji-hyo.
"Where is Chu Zhen?" I asked impatiently.
"She's inside, but..."
Before Song Ji-hyo could finish speaking, I immediately ran into the tent. There were many temporary beds inside, all occupied by wounded soldiers. I didn't see Chu Zhen at first glance.
"Zhao Zhengyu, where's Chu Zhen?" I saw Zhao Zhengyu come out from behind a curtain.
"Why are you here? Do you know how dangerous it is here?" Zhao Zhengyu said sternly with a serious expression.
"Where is Chu Zhen? Where is Chu Zhen?"
“It’s inside.” Zhao Zhengyu pointed to the curtain.
Ignoring my large belly, I hurried towards the door curtain.
Chu Zhen lay on a simple hospital bed, his head bandaged, his legs slinged up, and his hands wrapped in gauze.
“He encountered a collapse when he went to rescue people that day. He was only found the day before yesterday. His hands and legs were broken, but he had bruising on his head. He had been unconscious for three days.”
I looked at Chu Zhen lying on the bed, and I couldn't see any marks. I could only imagine the injuries he had suffered from the bandages.
Chu Zhen's breathing was very even. I held his hand. I remembered that the last time he was hospitalized was when he was stabbed by Amy. But that time I knew that Chu Zhen would wake up. This time, however, I had no confidence at all. I took Chu Zhen's hand and slowly placed it on my stomach.
"Honey, when we came today, the babies were so happy, probably because they were going to see their dad. They were moving around in my belly. Feel it, are they moving?"
"Honey, do you remember you told me before you came that you would wait for me to come back? Am I being disobedient? It's like I don't want to leave you. I came to see you today. Do you want me to wake up and see you?"
"Honey, what do you think we should name the baby? Do you want two boys, two girls, or like you said, one boy and one girl?"
......
"Chu Zhen, wake up, I miss you~"
Ultimately, I couldn't control my emotions. All those words were just to calm myself down. When I really had nothing to say, I just wanted to express what was deep in my heart.
