Chapter Fifty-Two: Heartbreaking
"I understand!" Chu Zhen handed the water glass back to me and turned to leave.
"Um~"
Chu Zhen turned around.
“Your things are here,” I said, pointing to the things on the ground.
"That's for you." Chu Zhen said and left without looking back. Watching his departing figure, I understood that it was truly over between us, on such a beautiful morning.
When we opened the package Chu Zhen brought, we found a lot of snacks, all of which we usually bought together when we went to the supermarket, as well as some medicine, including cold medicine, stomach medicine, Yunnan Baiyao, and even band-aids.
"There's so much food, we probably won't be able to finish it all by the end of the trip! Young people are really different when they're in love, so romantic. If I had met a man like Chu Zhen when I was your age, I wouldn't still be single today," Lin Dan said with envy.
I packed up a few things, kept some in my dorm, and prepared to deliver the rest to Lai Di today.
The whole trip went smoothly and was completed within the expected time. Before returning home, I went to Lai Di's house again. Seeing the child's reluctant eyes, I felt very sorry for her. I gave all the money I had left to Lai Di and asked her to take good care of her younger brother and grandmother. For a six or seven-year-old child, she had a maturity beyond her years.
Finally back in City A, Huang Yanyan was already waiting at the entrance of the TV station.
"Lin Dang, you've lost so much weight. I should have taken me with you!" That was the first thing Huang Yanyan said to me when she first saw me.
"Please treat me to something to eat; I'm penniless right now."
"Okay, I'll definitely raise you back to be as fat as me."
During dinner, I told Huang Yanyan about Chu Zhen. She was surprised but didn't scold me. She just kept comforting me, saying that out with the old, in with the new. While that's true, finding someone new like Chu Zhen is probably unrealistic.
After returning, I didn't go to the TV station. Although I didn't have many classes at school, I focused all my attention on my graduation thesis. Professor Huang was still all smiles at me; he probably didn't know about Chu Zhen and me.
My life returned to the normal track I had in college, except that a month later my salary card still had an extra month's salary. I withdrew the money, along with my previous salary, and asked Huang Yanyan to give it to Chu Zhen.
"Are you really going to do this and give him the money for the laser surgery too?"
"Yes, that's what I agreed to him back then."
"Why don't you go by yourself? If you ask someone to deliver it for you, there's really no room for negotiation. I still think that you two are just acting on impulse and that you'll make up."
Huang Yanyan did not agree to my request, so I had to deliver it myself. I did not contact Chu Zhen, but went directly to the entrance of the TV station. Normally, Chu Zhen would pass by at this time.
Sure enough, I know Chu Zhen quite well. His car drove out of the parking lot, but he didn't seem to see me. When he passed the gatekeeper, I walked up to him, but at that moment my heart was suddenly struck. There was a woman in his passenger seat. It wasn't Xiao Ai, nor any of my colleagues in the department, but the girl in the photo, the girl of my American classmate. I stood there, stunned, not knowing how to speak. Even after his car drove away, I remained standing there.
"Lin Dang, what's wrong?" The security guard asked as he walked up to me. Since that fire rescue, I've become somewhat famous at the TV station, and the security guard knew my name.
"Why are you crying? Come on, come inside and sit down."
I then realized that I had instinctively shed tears without even noticing.
"It's okay, I'll be going now!"
My heart is breaking. The images of Chu Zhen and that girl are haunting my mind—their appearance just now, the image in the photo...
"Lin Dang, are you alright!" I was sitting on the sofa when Huang Yanyan came home. I probably hadn't stopped crying all day. The moment I saw Yanyan, I couldn't hold back anymore and hugged her, bursting into tears.
"Yan Yan, my heart aches, it really hurts~" My reaction time is too slow. It's been more than a month, and only now am I feeling heartbroken.
"Cry, cry, you'll feel better after you've cried!" Yan Yan hugged me.
I don't know how much time passed, but my tears had probably dried up. However, my head started to ache unexpectedly, and my temples throbbed terribly. I didn't sleep a wink all night. When I closed my eyes, all I could think about was Chu Zhen and even the times we slept in each other's arms on this bed. That embrace would never belong to me again.
I don't know when I fell asleep. When I woke up, Yan Yan was dozing off next to me. But the environment was filled with the smell of medicine. Yes, I was hospitalized again.
"Lin Dang, you're finally awake! You scared me to death!" Yan Yan was woken up by my noise.
What's wrong with me?
“I went to wake you up before I went to work, but I couldn’t wake you up no matter how I called. So I called an ambulance. The doctor said that you fainted due to excessive grief, and you were also malnourished. You had been lying in bed for a day.”
"You've been here all day?"
"Yeah, I took the day off from work. Oh, and there's chicken soup here. My mom made it and brought it over." Yan Yan opened the thermos on the bedside table, and the aroma filled the air instantly. I was really hungry, and Yan Yan ladled a bowl for me.
In this world, you don't have to have many friends, but you must be sincere. Huang Yanyan and I are like that. She is my only friend in this city, and at this moment, she gave me warmth.
"I saw a girl sitting in the passenger seat of Chu Zhen's car, right when I was giving him money." I knew Yan Yan was very curious about what happened to me yesterday, but she didn't ask unless I told her.
“It’s all in the past.” Yan Yan looked at me.
"It's the girl in the photo, the girl in the photo he hid in his yearbook."
"Okay, let's not think about it anymore. It's their loss that we have such outstanding girls. We should live our lives well from now on." I still remember how Yan Yan calmly described the girl in the passenger seat of Chen Weiqi that day, but I couldn't be that calm today.
After two days in the hospital, Huang Yanyan took two days off because I didn't want my parents or anyone else to know. It would be pathetic to be hospitalized for love. The first thing Huang Yanyan did after being discharged was to pay back the money I owed, and she did it very successfully. My connection with Chu Zhen was now severed. Even though I knew Chu Zhen wouldn't contact me again, I still changed all my contact information.
Days passed by like this, and I believe Professor Huang must have known about us by now, but his attitude towards me remained unchanged. I graduated with my master's degree smoothly.
It's strange, but when we first met Chu Zhen, we always seemed to bump into each other in some corner of the city. But after we parted ways, we never saw each other again. It really is just like what Yan Yan said: we are like two parallel lines! We never intersected again!
