shrew
Jiang Yan tried several times but couldn't leave Chen Run's residence. One day, early in the morning, Chen Run went to court, so she took Huang Ying and prepared to leave Chen's residence once again.
Of course, the result was the same as the previous attempts she had made.
Jiang Yan had been suppressing her feelings for over ten days and could no longer stay in the Chen residence and passively accept Chen Run's kindness towards her. So, with no other choice, she decided to turn herself into a genuine shrew, just as she had previously thought.
Don't men all like gentle, considerate women?
If she were a shrew, she didn't believe Chen Run would still cling to her like that!
Jiang Yan first dumped the dishes on the ground without mercy in front of the maid who brought her breakfast, and then smashed the plates, bowls, chopsticks, spoons and other tableware on the ground one by one.
Then she severely criticized the maids and servants who came to clean for her, then scolded the nanny and tailor who took her measurements, and then threw all the clothes, jewelry and other odds and ends that Chen Run had given her into the yard, along with fruit and teacups.
In short, Jiang Yan destroyed everything she could, enduring the torment of her conscience, leaving nothing out.
After she finished, she felt incredibly guilty and lay down on the bed pretending to be asleep.
Just as she had guessed, Chen Run returned to the mansion and, upon learning of the outrageous things she had done, rushed to her residence.
However, she had already given instructions to Huang Ying, so as soon as he appeared, Huang Ying said, "Young Master Chen, the master is tired and has fallen asleep."
A fleeting look of disbelief crossed Chen Run's face, but he didn't pursue the matter further. Instead, he quickly reverted to his earlier worried expression.
"I heard from the servants that Ruyi was unhappy this morning. Do you know why?"
"Replying to Young Master Chen, this servant is not entirely sure either. My mistress suddenly lost her temper, and when I asked her, she scolded me as well."
"Even you were scolded?" Chen Run muttered to himself. "Why is that?"
Huang Ying said, "Young Master Chen, you have just finished court. Please go and rest. When the master wakes up, I will tell him about your visit to her."
Chen Run stood there, lost in thought. He glanced at Huang Ying, then looked curiously at the closed door, and said, "In that case, Ruyi, please take good care of yourself. I'll come back later." He paused for a moment, then turned back.
Huang Ying stood there, watching Chen Run leave the courtyard. After walking for quite a while, she hurriedly pushed open the door and went inside.
Jiang Yan had already gotten out of bed and was standing at the door waiting for her.
"How was it? What was your reaction? Were you very angry?"
“Master, Young Master Chen shows no sign of being angry at all.”
"How could that be? Didn't he see the things I threw in the yard?"
"Master, Young Master Chen doesn't care about them at all; he only cares about you."
Jiang Yan was stunned: "How is that possible? There are so many of those things, and they're so valuable. Doesn't he feel any pain at all? That shouldn't be the case."
“Master, I’m not lying. It’s true. From the moment Young Master Chen entered the courtyard until he left, he didn’t even glance at the things you threw away.”
Jiang Yan couldn't help but rest her chin on her hand in deep thought. After a moment, she exclaimed excitedly, "Is it because of me that I did something bad for just one day? Wasn't it bad enough?"
Huang Ying didn't know what to say and just stared at her blankly.
Jiang Yan crossed his arms and paced around the room, thinking. After a while, he said, "Fine, I'll do it for a few more days, and I'll go all out, let's see how he can remain calm!"
Huang Ying's lips twitched involuntarily: "Master, is this really a good idea? Won't Young Master Chen make us pay for all the damaged items?"
Hearing his words, Jiang Yan couldn't help but worry. After all, these things were all made of real money. If they were seriously damaged, he might actually make her pay for them. How would she pay for them? By signing a contract of servitude?
Thinking of this, Jiang Yan quickly and fearfully shook her head vigorously: "No, no, no, this is absolutely not allowed!!"
"What's wrong, Master? What are you thinking about?"
Jiang Yan thought for a moment and said, "What you said makes some sense. Although complete destruction can arouse his resentment and dissatisfaction, as you said, if he can't stand it, he'll settle all the old and new scores together. How am I supposed to compensate him?"
"Master, what do you mean?"
Jiang Yan smiled slyly: "Same as today."
Indeed, if Jiang Yan were to act like a shrew, all she could do besides throw a tantrum and be unreasonable, arrogant, and domineering. But the only things she could actually do were destroy things.
However, she dared not actually destroy the items now; instead, she only dared to lightly toss them on the ground, pretending to have thrown them away without breaking them.
Huang Ying thought this was a good idea, as it would both showcase Jiang Yan's fiery temper and help him avoid having to pay compensation later, so she responded very enthusiastically.
Chen Run did not attend court that day, but Jiang Yan was unaware of this.
Jiang Yan got up very early and, together with Huang Ying, painstakingly arranged all the valuable calligraphy and paintings, bottles and jars, gold and silver jewelry, jade jewelry and other valuables in the house in the yard, and even went to great lengths to arrange them as if they were lying on the ground.
They were busy from early morning and didn't even have breakfast. Once everything was ready, Jiang Yan started rehearsing ahead of time.
She pointed and cursed in the courtyard, then pointed and shouted in the courtyard, and then had Huang Ying cooperate by saying a few times, "Master, have mercy! Master, don't be angry! This servant was wrong!" It was funny and ridiculous, but the two of them were completely absorbed in it and took it very seriously.
Chen Run's life revolves entirely around Jiang Yan.
When he went to court each day, Jiang Yan was still asleep. By the time he returned home after court, Jiang Yan was usually just getting up or starting to eat breakfast. So most of the time, Chen Run would eat breakfast with Jiang Yan and then stroll around the mansion and chat.
That day, after finishing his official duties, Chen Run asked Qingfeng to deliver a letter, while he himself would come to see Jiang Yan at an appointed time.
Based on his usual observations, when he came to find Jiang Yan, Jiang Yan should not have gotten up yet, or at best, she should have just gotten up. However, when he arrived, there were voices in Jiang Yan's yard, as well as sounds of people running around.
Chen Run found it strange and quietly peeked through the crack in the door.
Jiang Yan's courtyard has two gates. One is the main gate leading into the courtyard, which is usually closed so that there is not a single crack left.
There is another door, the small door in front of him right now. This is the door to the small courtyard next to Jiang Yan's bedroom. There is a gap between the two doors, which is left for the cats kept in the mansion to visit each other.
Chen Run peered through the crack and saw what was happening inside. He couldn't help but laugh, but instead of knocking to go in, he quietly left.
After Jiang Yan and Huang Ying practiced their routines several times, the maid who was supposed to bring Jiang Yan breakfast arrived as usual.
Jiang Yan seized the opportunity and cursed at the air, "What a piece of junk! I don't care about it, I don't like it, I don't want it!"
The maid, unaware of the intricacies of the situation, pushed open the small door and was startled to see the courtyard filled with calligraphy, paintings, and treasures.
Jiang Yan continued to curse viciously, "What are you looking at? You want it? Come on, I'll give it to you, I'll give it to you! You can have whichever one you like!!!"
The maid was a little girl, a bit dim-witted. When she heard Jiang Yan say that, she was so frightened that she dropped the tray she was holding to the ground.
The tray was filled with bird's nest, sea cucumber, and shark fin that the kitchen had prepared for Jiang Yan. All of it was dumped on the floor, which made Jiang Yan feel so sorry for it.
"Miss Liu, why are you angry?"
Jiang Yan couldn't help but sigh inwardly, then deliberately acted even more fierce: "What do you mean? I can't even get angry? Why can't I get angry? I can get angry whenever I want, and I can throw things whenever I want!" As she spoke, she gently kicked the gold hairpin next to her with her right foot, causing it to hit the jade hairpin next to her with a crisp sound.
The little girl was terrified and ran away in a panic.
Seeing her disheveled state as she ran away, Jiang Yan gave a wry smile: "It seems the little girl was terrified!"
Huang Ying: "Master, you didn't do it on purpose. There's nothing we can do about it. You should still make preparations. Young Master Chen might be here soon."
Jiang Yan couldn't help but sigh again, then immersed herself in the persona of the wicked woman.
