Chapter 110: Got Beaten
It always feels good to be remembered by others, even if it is just a small bone.
It took at least two or three hours to get from the county town to the commune, no matter how fast or slow the journey was. Wen Wan fell asleep while swaying.
Lu Dongping leaned there with his legs between him, his younger brother on his left and his wife on his right. By the time they reached the destination, his legs were so numb from being pressed that he couldn't turn around for a long time.
Ignoring Liu Dacai's gloating smile, Lu Dongping reached out and grabbed Lu Donglin: "Get up, or I'll leave you behind."
Lu Donglin's face was resting on his legs, and he was drooling as he slept. When he heard his voice, he sat up straight with his eyes wide open.
I rubbed my eyes with my hands and looked around. Oh, here we are, almost reaching their team.
Lu Dongping called out to Wen Wan, but the way he addressed her was completely different. His gentle eyes were filled with tears. Wen Wan sat up straight, her mind still a little hazy. She rubbed her eyes before finally clearing her mind. She helped pass the bag down, and Lu Dongping took it from below.
Two sacks, quite heavy.
After taking the things down, Lu Dongping took out a box of "Goldfish" from his pocket and handed one to Liu Dacai.
Liu Dacai didn't hesitate, took it and put it to his nose to sniff: "This thing is still good, but it's a bit expensive, I can't afford it, and the leaf tobacco is too pungent."
Lu Dongping laughed and said, "That's definitely different. Planting two rows of tobacco leaves is enough for you to smoke for a year without spending a penny. This stuff is addictive and can't be afforded."
Liu Dacai chuckled, sniffed again, but couldn't bear to light a match to smoke it. He put the cigarette behind his ear and waved to Lu Donglin: "Then I'll send it to you here, I'm going back!" He could only send it here, and no matter how far it went, the tractor couldn't pass.
"Thanks! Come over to my house when you're free."
Liu Dacai started the tractor and said, "Of course. Apart from anything else, if you hold a banquet, people will definitely come to drink."
"become!"
Lu Dongping stood there, waiting for the tractor to drive away before walking back with the bag.
The two heavy sacks looked light in his hands, as if they were not heavy at all.
"Lu Donglin and I will lift one each. It's quite heavy and it's pinching my hands."
Lu Donglin said, "Sister, you can just go. There's no need for you to come with these things." As he said that, he consciously took the bag with less stuff from Lu Dongping's hand. Inside it were the old newspapers they got at the scrap yard and the last side dishes that Wen Wan bought.
Wen Wan also had her hands full. She was holding a handbag with an orange plastic ring, which contained the precious bottle. In the other hand, she was holding the meat that Lu Dongping bought. Her hands were really full.
The sun had just set at this moment. As the setting sun sank behind the mountain, its light dyed half the sky red.
It will take a while before work is over. Along the way, I only met a few children fishing by the West River. It was quite quiet.
The yard was quiet. Lu Dongping put his bag down against the wall. Lu Donglin asked him, "Brother, do you want to stew bones or eat dumplings tonight?"
"It's too late to stew the bones now. Go pick some green onions from the field. Pick more so we can have dumplings for dinner."
I have dumplings to eat, so what’s the big deal about picking onions? Lu Donglin ran away without even taking a breath.
"Put the corn bones in the pot after dinner and simmer slowly. By tomorrow morning they will be cooked through and ready to drink."
Wen Wan nodded: "That's it."
Seeing that it was getting late, Lu Dongping did not delay any longer. He opened the door to the main room and said, "Excuse me for taking the things you bought into the house and sorting them out first."
"Then help me take the lid off and put it in the main room. It's dark in your room now and I don't dare to go in." At least the main room was still bright.
Without saying a word, Lu Dongping took down the lid hanging on the east wall of the parish and placed it on top of the cellar: "I'm going to cook!"
"Um!"
Wen Wan responded, reached out and wiped the lid. After she found there was no dust on her hands, she took out the things in her pockets one by one.
While it was still light, I took the toilet paper and other things I bought to the back room and put them in my backpack, and then took out the cloth I bought.
Although she had never lacked money since she was a child, her food, clothing, housing and transportation were all taken care of by others. Even when she occasionally made clothes, the elders would have picked out the fabric she liked long ago. This was her first time making such a large purchase, and she felt an indescribable excitement.
While arranging the cloth, I was thinking about what to make.
It's not just cloth, there's also a lot of thread that she needs to find time to wind up, as well as colored silk threads. If she needs to paste more soles on shoes at home, she wants to paste some insoles and embroider two pairs of insoles.
I saved the torn quilt cover and folded up the rest, bringing it into the house along with the cotton yarn and placing it with the cloth from last time. Before I had time to put the threads away, Zhang Hongying and Lu Chun'e returned from work.
Wen Wan looked back, then stood up and went outside to greet her, "Aunt!"
Zhang Hongying responded with a "hmm" with a dull expression, looking a little unhappy.
Wen Wan glanced at her doubtfully, then looked at Lu Chun'e. Lu Chun'e winked at her and said silently, "I'll tell you later."
Before the two of them could get close to each other and whisper, Zhang Hongying asked Wen Wan, "Have you bought the quilt cover?"
Wen Wan took it out and showed it to her: "I bought it. There are ones with peony prints, but I bought the one with a harvest pattern. It looks lively and festive."
Women have a natural love for cloth. When Zhang Hongying saw the bright red printed quilt cover that Wenwan pulled, a smile finally appeared on her face.
"I have the quilt cover, and I have some white cotton fabric for the quilt lining. I remember you bought some last time, too. It should be enough if we put them together later."
Wen Wan said, "Keep what you have. I have enough. Getting married is a big deal. How can I just wait for you and Lu Dongping to get the tickets and money? My family sent me tickets last time, and my seventh brother also gave me some. I used them all and bought a lot. I'll slowly start when I have time."
Zhang Hongying looked at her with a complicated expression. She couldn't figure out whether Wen Wan's family was too well-off to care about such small things, or if she was just a little bit silly. Aren't normal people particularly concerned about how much their in-laws give them when they get married? Why is it different with her?
"What's wrong?" Wen Wan looked at her with a strange expression. Did she say something wrong?
Zhang Hongying hurriedly shook her head: "No, no, it's nothing. I just got caught in the sun today. I might have a little heatstroke. I feel dizzy."
As she was talking, Lu Chun'e went to the kitchen and took a look around, then brought out a basin from the stove: "Mom, my brother bought some meat and said we'll have dumplings for dinner, so I need to knead the dough!"
Zhang Hongying sighed: "Let's go, it's just a small amount of food anyway, you won't miss it after I'm done with it."
Lu Chun'e stuck out her tongue and went into the house.
Zhang Hongying asked again: "Have you gone to dig up some green onions? There aren't many green onions, so if that doesn't work, just cut some leeks and mix them in."
"He went to Donglin."
As soon as Wen Wan finished speaking, Lu Donglin came to the yard carrying a basket and a hoe.
Seeing Zhang Hongying, she shouted with a smile: "Mom! My brother bought some meat, and we're having dumplings for dinner!"
"Well, eat dumplings! Come here, I want to ask you something."
Lu Donglin's heart skipped a beat as he looked at her sullen face. He put away his playful smile and didn't dare approach her. Instead, he walked around her and placed the basket and hoe at the kitchen door. "Mom, what are you asking? Ask me, I'm listening!"
Zhang Hongying suddenly stood up, grabbed a broom and rushed over, raising her hand to hit him.
Wen Wan was startled and shouted, "Lu Dongping!"
Why did he suddenly start hitting people?
Lu Donglin didn't expect that he would be beaten suddenly without being scolded. He didn't have time to run away and was hit by a broom.
It didn't hurt that much, but I was just confused: "What are you doing?"
Zhang Hongying was furious. Feeling that the broom didn't hurt at all, he felt unsatisfied. He turned around and grabbed a stick in his hand: "What should I do? I'm going to beat you to death, you troublesome little bastard!"
Lu Donglin ran away.
After Zhang Hongying was driven out of the yard, she disappeared.
"You little bastard, run! If you run, don't come back. If you come back, I'll break your legs!"
Wen Wan shouted, and Lu Dongping threw down the kitchen knife and ran out.
"What's going on?"
Lu Chun'e had just scooped out some noodles when she said, "It's Jian Zhaodi and Zhou Guicai's wife who came to work to make trouble for my parents, saying that Lu Donglin beat up their Lu Minghong and Zhou Guicai yesterday, pinning them to the ground and beating them to a pulp. Even if you weren't here, you wouldn't know. The scolding was really nasty. That woman Jian Zhaodi also said—"
"What else?"
Lu Chun'e glanced at Wen Wan, hesitated for a moment, and finally brushed some of the words aside: "Didn't he run off with his backpack after school yesterday to pick pig grass? In the end, he didn't go straight to the fields, but ran to someone else's house, saying that this and that were missing."
The words were vague and Wen Wan didn't understand at all.
She thought about Lu Donglin's wet look when he came back yesterday. Did they have a fight?
Lu Dongping understood, but he didn't plan to explain these messy things to Wen Wan in detail. He called out to Wen Wan, "Just do your thing. Don't worry about him. He just needs to be dealt with."
Wen Wan looked at him and then at Lu Chun'e. Lu Chun'e said, "Sister Wen Wan, don't worry about it. It's not the first time he's been beaten. Mother has been arguing with those two women all morning and afternoon. If I don't give him a good beating, it will hurt my health."
Okay!
She looked back and since the things were all in the main room, there was no need to rush to clean them up.
"Let me peel the onions and pick the leeks!"
Lu Dongping took out a basket and said, "Pick the leeks. I'll peel the green onions. They're too spicy for the eyes."
Wen Wan didn't say much. She took the basket, sat on the wooden stool outside the kitchen and started picking vegetables.
Zhang Hongying obviously didn't catch up with anyone. She stood at the entrance of the yard and cursed at the top of her voice. It seemed that she was cursing Lu Donglin, but when she listened carefully, that didn't seem to be the case.
It was the first time that Wen Wan had heard someone curse like that. She thought it was a bit harsh, but also quite interesting.
Zhang Hongying had cursed enough and felt a little relieved, so she went back to the yard to chop grass to feed the pigs.
The pig grass had just been mixed and had not yet been poured into the pigpen when Lu Donglin came back howling like a ghost.
Not far behind followed Lu Mingjiang, his face livid, holding a bamboo stick. He had obviously been caught and beaten. Wen Wan had never seen him cry in all the time she had known him, and he was crying hysterically like this.
