Chapter 14: Admitting defeat
She didn't dare to linger in the warmth of the quilt any longer. She dressed hurriedly and went out without even combing her messy braids.
It was quiet outside, but the shed was warm. The fire under the pot was burning brightly and smoke was coming out of the pot. Breakfast was ready.
Wang Jianmao came out of the room and was slightly stunned when he saw her messy and slightly confused appearance. He smiled and said, "Are you up? Are you feeling better today?"
Wen Wan nodded hurriedly: "It's not as bad as yesterday. It's just that I got up late. Did you cook for me?"
Wang Jianmao said, "Yes, we are used to getting up early. I didn't call you because we were feeling very uncomfortable when we first arrived. It was just a matter of convenience."
Wen Wan felt a little embarrassed, pinched the corner of her clothes, and lowered her head and said, "Thank you!"
"You're welcome. Go wash up quickly, and come eat when you're done. You can't be late for work. If you go halfway through the day like you did yesterday, the captain will really scold you."
Wen Wan turned and went into the house, untied her braids and tied them up again with what she thought was a very neat speed, then brushed her teeth and washed her face. By the time she was done, Wang Jianmao and the others had already finished their meal.
"Wen Wan, we won't wait for you anymore. After dinner, hurry to the warehouse to get your things and go to the fields, okay?" After giving a warning, Wang Jianmao followed Liu Changqing and Zhu Feng and left. It was too slow, there was really no way they could wait any longer.
Wen Wan didn't dare to delay any longer, so she quickly scooped up the rice and added water to the pot.
Holding the lunch box and looking at the same corn grits porridge that she had been eating for several days in a row, she felt that it was really hard to swallow. She couldn't eat it after just two bites, so she simply took it into the house and put it there. She ate two biscuits, drank some boiled water, took two candies and put them in her pocket, chewed a piece of dried meat, and then locked the door and went to the warehouse to get farm tools.
I didn’t even have the meal, but I was still late when I got to the field.
This time, before Lu Minghai could even open his mouth, some members of the commune started to protest. A woman in her forties, wearing a patched blue cotton jacket, grumbled in a sarcastic tone, "These educated youth from the city seem to be enjoying themselves. They only get to work in the fields when the sun is burning their butts. Are they here to support our production? Or are they here to hold us back and enjoy the comforts of being the eldest daughter?"
Wen Wan frowned and looked at the woman who was talking not far away: "Are you performing an opera? Do you want me to paint your face? Who are you talking about in a sarcastic way? I drink your water and eat your food, how can I be so powerful? Even more powerful than the team leader?" She was not a person who could tolerate others. She had never tolerated anyone since she was a child. She looked soft, but her character was not soft at all.
The woman slammed the rake into the ground and shouted even louder: "What's the matter? You're late for work day after day, and you're slacking off at work. Do you think you're right? You're not eating my food or drinking my water, but you're eating the food of the entire production team. You're slacking off and still getting your rations at the end of the year. Who are you trying to cheat? If this is the way to do it, then we should all do it."
Wen Wan smiled and said, "Then just do it. Talking without doing is a coward!" Comparing voices? Ah, that couldn't be won. She admitted defeat.
After saying that, she walked behind Lu Dongping and started picking up stones. She was slow and weak, but she was self-aware. Arguing with words doesn't delay work.
"Who are you calling a coward, little hoof?"
Lu Minghai dug his pickaxe into the compacted wasteland and turned to say, "Wang Mingfang, you're never going to stop talking, are you? The whole field is filled with your voice. Are you working or just putting on a show?"
The woman named Wang Mingfang almost couldn't catch her breath because of his yelling.
"No, Captain, what do you mean? She's lazy and slacking off, so you can't say anything. The members supervise each other. It was fine before, why not now? You're soft-hearted just because she's good-looking, like a vixen. You're the production captain, a senior..."
"Bullshit!" Gao Xiulan threw the rake in her hand to the ground. "Wang Mingfang, you stinky bitch with a bad mouth, can you speak human language, huh? Can you? If not, I'll just tear your rotten mouth apart to prevent it from being filled with maggots and making people sick. You are a forty-year-old woman, and you are comparing yourself with a teenager from the city. Who doesn't need to learn and adapt? Why don't you say that you can farm and chew so well since you were born from your mother's womb? You have been adapting for more than ten years. Who are you looking down on? What's wrong with the young educated youth working slowly? Slow work means slow treatment. She got two points yesterday, how many points did you get? Do you want to trade with me?"
The people around were motionless, just standing there watching the fun.
