Chapter 145 Ginger Soup

Chapter 145 Ginger Soup

As soon as school was over, Lu Donglin rushed out of the classroom. After Wen Wan had finished cleaning up, he asked her, "Sister-in-law, the door of the clinic is open. Do you want to go and have a look?" He had been paying attention to the clinic opposite during class. He was so anxious that he finally saw that the door was open. He was afraid that Wen Wan had forgotten it again.

"I bought some Analgin." Wen Wan looked at the sky outside. It wasn't raining, but the sun wasn't out either. The road must be very difficult to walk on. She looked at the leather shoes on her feet. They were the new pair that Lao Wen bought for her. She was extremely reluctant to step in the mud. After hesitating for a moment, she took off her shoes with difficulty and changed into sandals. The cold feeling suddenly rushed up from the soles of her feet, making her shiver.

Lu Donglin was stunned for a moment: "Dabai tablets? Anyway, school is over. Go home and ask mom to make you some ginger soup. Then you should get some sleep and sweat it out. It should be fine. Don't take this for now, okay?"

Wen Wan gave him a puzzled look and followed him out: "Is there anything special?"

"I heard that this stuff is addictive. If I take it this time, I'll have to take it again next time I get sick. If I don't take it, I won't get better."

Wen Wan: —Then she bought it in vain?

Even though it wasn't raining, the road was still difficult to walk on, even more difficult than when it was raining. Her feet were covered in mud. Wen Wan really couldn't get used to walking in such muddy ground. She subconsciously swung her feet as she walked, and mud was everywhere.

"Why isn't the sky clear yet? It's going to rain next week."

Lu Donglin sighed with an adult look, "It's so difficult. Every year during this time, the weather is always bad. If it doesn't rain, the corn in the fields will sprout and the rice in the fields will fall apart. It won't clear up."

He was not the only one sighing. Every household was extremely worried. It was already the end of the month in the blink of an eye. The corn in the field was ready to be picked and the rice had turned yellow. Just when they needed the sun, the rain kept falling. What was going on?

Lu Minghai spoke to Lu Mingjiang at the door with a sad face.

Wen Wan and Lu Donglin went up to the yard and called out, "Uncle, Dad!"

Lu Minghai's expression softened slightly: "School is over!"

"Yeah, school's over."

Lu Donglin stomped his feet at the edge of the eaves, took off his straw sandals, walked into the house barefoot, put his book bag in it, and then went to the kitchen to get a ladle.

It was still early and not time to cook, and there was no sign of Zhang Hongying either outside or inside the house.

"Dad, where's my mom?"

Lu Mingjiang said, "Let's go pick some pig grass before it rains."

Lu Donglin said: "Oh, then I'll go too."

Then, he handed the ladle to Wen Wan: "Sister-in-law, do it yourself, add some hot water, I'm leaving."

After saying that, he went into the house, carried the bamboo basket on his back, put on his straw sandals under the eaves, and ran away in a hurry.

Wen Wan scooped water from the bucket under the eaves to rinse her feet, then went back to the house to soak her feet in hot water, changed her shoes and socks, and then came out to brush her sandals.

I felt uncomfortable, and my nose was sniffing. I just brushed my shoes for a while and it felt like my snot was falling into my mouth.

By the time she managed to sneeze twice, Lu Mingjiang and Lu Minghai had finished their conversation and were walking out of the yard, calling her, "Wanwan, come over and play when you're free."

Wen Wan tearfully responded, "Oh!"

It was still early, and Lu Mingjiang couldn't just sit around at home, so he called out to Wen Wan as he left the house: "If you've caught a cold, don't keep touching cold water. Ask Chun'e or your mother to make you a bowl of ginger tea to help you sweat."

Wen Wan responded and continued to squat there, sneezing non-stop.

He didn't stop until all the mud on his shoes was gone. He picked them up, shook them, and hung them on the windowsill to dry.

I looked at the time. It was still early. Lu Dongping and Lu Chun'e would have to wait for a while before they came back.

She was not in a hurry to cook, so she went back to the room to correct the homework submitted in the afternoon.

Because she had two self-study classes and the homework load was quite heavy, she didn't assign any extra homework after school in the afternoon, so her afternoon workload was a bit daunting. During the day, during the morning reading class, homework would be assigned immediately after the new lesson, so the homework books were usually handed out after the morning self-study class.

Wen Wan has always been very serious about correcting homework.

If the writing is incorrect or the word formation is incorrect, she will not only put a red cross on it, but also correct it with a red pen on the side.

My head feels dizzy today. I keep feeling like sneezing while sitting here and I can’t concentrate at all.

Efficiency seems to be completely absent.

She took out the big white tablets she had bought and looked at them, hesitating whether to eat them or not. After hearing what Lu Donglin said, she felt that this thing might be addictive, and she didn't know whether it was true or not.

In the end, she didn't dare to eat it. She planned to wait for Lu Dongping to come back and ask him.

After sitting for a while, she felt dizzy and about to fall asleep at any moment. She hadn't finished correcting any homework yet, so she simply got up and went out to make some ginger soup for herself.

Ginger soup. Lu Chun'e made it for her last time. All she had to do was wash the ginger, slice it, and boil it. She thought it was quite simple.

But after she added water to the pot and lit the fire, she couldn't find ginger—

She searched the entire kitchen.

What's the point of making ginger soup without ginger?

The ginger soup cannot be cooked, but the fire has been lit and the water has been added. I might as well cook the rice. It’s just a matter of adding a few more scoops of water.

Just as I added water into the pot, Lu Dongping came back. He came back quite early, even earlier than Lu Chun'e.

The kitchen door was open, so he walked into the yard, took a quick shower, and then went into the kitchen.

Wen Wan was stunned for a moment: "So early today?"

I looked up and saw that it was not too early, half past five. But the pace was too fast.

"Chun'e isn't with you?"

Lu Dongping pulled a bench and sat down: "We're together. She walks slower, so she's a little behind."

After saying that, he glanced at the stove and said, "Mom isn't home? Are you cooking? What are you cooking?"

"I don't know, I—" He sneezed before he could finish his words. He wiped it with a handkerchief before saying, "I have a slight cold. I bought Analgin, but Donglin said it's addictive, so I didn't dare take it. I planned to make some ginger soup, but the water boiled and I couldn't find any ginger."

"Of course you didn't find it. The ginger is growing in the ground!" Lu Dongping stood up, lifted the lid of the pot and looked at the water in the pot, then looked at the slightly smaller pot inside: "The water over there has been added, so leave it as it is. I'll rinse this pot for you and add water to boil over here." As he spoke, he had already scooped up water, brushed the bottom of the pot with a clean sorghum brush, rinsed it again with clean water, and then scooped a ladle of water and put it in.

He closed the lid and said, "You keep it burning first. I'll go to my plot and dig some ginger." After saying that, he turned and went out, picking up the hoe that was standing behind the door.

You don't need much. Just put a big piece in and boil a bowl. The taste is strong enough to make people unforgettable for a long time.

Lu Dongping washed and sliced the ginger and threw it into the pot, covered it with a lid and simmered it slowly, then he took a closer look at Wen Wan's face.

The little girl sat behind the stove. The firelight made her face red, and the tip of her nose was also red. She had tears in her eyes because she kept wanting to sneeze.

"Sitting behind the stove is very scorching. Are you done with your work? I can cook by myself."

Wen Wan sat there and didn't want to get up: "I think it's quite warm to roast it."

Lu Dongping raised his eyebrows slightly, turned around and went outside. When he came back in, he had an extra piece of clothing in his hand, a camel-colored short woolen cloth he had taken out of the cabinet.

He reached out and pulled Wen Wan up and wrapped her up in his clothes: "You can't keep being roasted all the time, wear something thicker, go and take care of your own things first, drink some ginger soup and eat something later, then go to bed early and cover yourself up, you will feel much better after sweating a little."

As he said that, he hugged her and walked out. Wen Wan leaned on his shoulder and didn't want to move, so she let him push her. As soon as they walked out of the kitchen, they saw Lu Chun'e, and Wen Wan quickly stood still.

"Chun'e, why did you come back just now? Why aren't you with your brother?"

Lu Chun'e said, "We went together. My brother walked fast, and I met Chunyan on the way and said a few words to her." Then she climbed up the eaves, put down her book bag, and asked Lu Dongping, "Brother, what are you cooking tonight?"

"There's water boiling in the pot, let's make porridge. There's ginger soup in the small pot next to it. Please keep an eye on the fire and make sure it doesn't boil dry."

Lu Chun'e responded and went into the kitchen. There was no one in the yard, so Lu Dongping put his hand on Wen Wan's waist again. Wen Wan patted him rudely, but he didn't let her go, so he pushed her under the eaves and into the house.

There were several piles of exercise books and her textbook notebooks on the desk.

Lu Dongping raised his eyebrows: "So many today?"

Wen Wan takes the collected class assignments home to correct every day, but today it seems that there are extra many.

Wen Wan leaned on the desk and counted on her fingers: "Chinese vocabulary, homework, and yesterday's composition, math. I felt unwell at noon today, and was dizzy in the afternoon. I had two self-study classes, and they were doing homework the whole time. I did all the classwork and homework in school, and it's all here."

Lu Dongping put his hands around her waist, and as she let out a low cry of surprise, he picked her up and placed her on the desk.

"What are you doing?"

Wen Wan's eyes were wide open, as if she was saying, "I'm very fierce, so be careful."

Lu Dongping laughed and reached out to press her head: "This is more convenient. Yeah, this way you will feel more comfortable too."

Wen Wan sniffed, frowned a few times, and sneezed all of a sudden. She turned her head and covered her mouth, all in one go.

Tears immediately rolled out of her eyes, and she said with a thick nasal voice, "I've had a runny nose since this morning. Both of my handkerchiefs are useless. My nose is so painful."

Lu Dongping took a handkerchief and wiped her nose: "I'll wash it for you, then put it on the stove to dry. I'll go to the commune tomorrow to see if there are any for sale in the supply and marketing cooperative, and then buy you two more."

After saying that, he glanced at the pile of homework books on the table and said, "How about you go to bed and cover yourself up, don't rush to correct the homework, pick out the simple ones later, and let Chun'e help you correct them?"

What a bad idea! Wen Wan rejected it outright: "Just go about your business. You really can't ask someone else to do things like grading homework for you. If I don't grade the homework, how would I know who has mastered the knowledge I've taught and how much they have actually learned?"
