Chapter 154: No Children for the Time Being
Lu Dongping's hand reached inside her clothes and covered her flat belly. He whispered hotly in her ear, "No, you have to be inside to get pregnant. I always do it outside, don't you remember?"
So every time he was done, he had to wash it off with water. It was a bit troublesome, but it was the only solution. When he went to the hospital, they gave him a box of stuff, saying he could use it to hold his stuff in during sex. He tried it secretly, and it was incredibly uncomfortable, greasy, and didn't feel clean. If it didn't make him feel comfortable, how could Wanwan, who was so delicate, feel comfortable? So he never used it.
After Wen Wan realized what he meant, she kicked him rudely, and he took the opportunity to slide his hand down from her soft belly.
The next day was another day of getting up early. When Zhang Hongying and the others got up, they heard footsteps and voices outside. Wen Wan looked at the time as usual. It was not yet five o'clock. She turned over and wanted to go back to sleep, but she was afraid of falling asleep. When Lu Dongping got up with a rustle, she also sat up, stretched, yawned, and got up slowly.
After breakfast, it was already dawn. Some people went to the fields, and some went to school.
She and Lu Chun'e were walking and chatting in front, talking about making clothes. Lu Donglin followed them listlessly without saying a word.
Lu Dongfu glanced at the two people in front of him, then at Lu Donglin, and poked him with his hand: "Hey, Donglin, what's wrong with you? Did you make a mistake?"
Lu Donglin sighed dejectedly and kicked the stone in the middle of the road far away, which hit Lu Chun'e's heel.
Lu Chun'e was startled and turned to look at him: "Lu Donglin, what are you doing?"
Lu Donglin didn't want to pay attention to her and rolled his eyes at her.
Lu Chun'e was so angry that she wanted to pick up the stone and throw it back. She was really getting more and more annoying.
When they reached the fork in the road, Lu Dongfu and Lu Chun'e went to the commune, and only Wen Wan and Lu Donglin went to the brigade primary school.
Lu Donglin was hesitant and wanted to admit his mistake to Wen Wan, but for some reason, he, who usually couldn't walk fast, walked so fast today. Before he could make up his mind, he had already arrived at school.
Now, there is nothing to say.
I didn't sleep well the night before, and I was preoccupied with things. I was in a daze during the morning reading class. During the ten-minute break after the morning reading class, Wen Wan was still in the office. Lu Dongping secretly looked outside several times and found other teachers in the office, so he could only return to the classroom in disappointment.
After the first class, Hu Gaoquan returned to the office with his textbooks and notebooks. When he saw Wen Wan, he said, "Teacher Wen, what's going on with your son Lu Donglin? He has been having a lot of problems these past two days. What happened at home?" He looked at Wen Wan and found that her class schedule and daily routine were no different from before. It didn't seem like something big had happened at home. So why was Lu Donglin acting so dazed and abnormal?
Wen Wan was confused: "Ah? What happened to Lu Donglin?" It was only the first class, what could have happened?
Hu Gaoquan said, "During morning reading class, everyone was reading, but he was just sitting there, filling in the blanks. His mouth opened and closed without making a sound. Just now in Chinese class, he was holding the book upside down. I couldn't stand it anymore, so I hit him with a stick. I don't know where his thoughts have gone."
Wen Wan sighed, "There's nothing much going on at home that he should worry about. Maybe I scolded him a little too harshly yesterday, and he worked overtime to catch up on homework last night and didn't sleep well." She glanced at her watch and said, "I'll go talk to him after this class."
Ten minutes was a limited time, and half of it was already past. She had no intention of going to find Lu Donglin immediately.
Lu Donglin was lying on the shabby desk and looked unwell.
He hadn't recovered from Wen Wan's scolding yesterday, and now he was spanked again in class. The bamboo stick stung his palms, and his face burned as well. Thirteen or fourteen was no longer a child, and the young man's self-esteem was quietly growing. He felt like all his classmates were looking at him, laughing at him, and he wished he could dig a rat hole and crawl into it.
The second period was also Chinese. This time, he perked up. Although he still couldn't concentrate, at least he didn't make the same stupid mistake as holding the book upside down. During the class, Hu Gaoquan called him to answer a question, and he stumbled upon the right answer. After class, Hu Gaoquan called him, "Lu Donglin, come with me to the office."
Well, he couldn't escape the embarrassment of going to the office. The thought of Old Hu criticizing him in front of his sister-in-law made Lu Donglin wish he'd died right there. He'd made such a solemn promise yesterday, no wonder no one believed him. He really wasn't trustworthy.
Dejected, he followed Hu Gaoquan out of the classroom under the gaze of his classmates. At the door of the office, he heard Hu Gaoquan's voice: "Teacher Wen, I called someone for you."
Wen Wan thanked her and without even entering the office, she called out to him while holding her textbooks, "Follow me to the school gate."
Lu Donglin pursed his lips and followed her step by step towards the holly tree at the school gate.
Wen Wan stopped and glanced up. Several students in the fourth grade class were looking at her furtively, but they looked away as soon as they met her gaze.
Before she could even open her mouth, Lu Donglin finally mustered up the courage to say, "I'm sorry, Teacher Wen. I will definitely correct my attitude towards study and never lie again."
He didn't call her sister-in-law, he called her teacher.
He had called her that before during class, but Wen Wan always felt that the "Teacher Wen" he called her this time was different from before.
Wen Wan nodded. She had originally told Hu Gaoquan that she wanted to have a good talk with Lu Donglin, but now she didn't know what to talk about.
"Okay, as long as you realize your mistake. In fact, the fact that you were able to pass the fourth grade is already an improvement. Although you have only been in class for a little over a month this semester, your teacher Hu has already praised you twice in front of me."
Noticing the slight glint in Lu Donglin's eyes, she continued, "One time he said you were more serious in class and more active in speaking up. Another time he said your handwriting was very neat, and that you had made significant progress compared to third grade. Donglin, I was very pleased when I heard the teacher praise you. I'm the only child in our family, and I really like you and treat you like my own brother. I hope you can become excellent."
Without mentioning what happened in the previous class, Lu Donglin breathed a sigh of relief. He lowered his head for a long time before looking up and meeting her gaze. "I'll try my best." Then, fearing Wen Wan wouldn't believe him, he quickly added, "Really, I will try my best. I know I have shortcomings, and I know I can't control myself. Maybe I can't do as well as you think, but I will try my best."
Wen Wan nodded: "Okay, I get it. I'll just work hard. The result is not important. Anyway, we've tried our best. No matter what happens in the future, we won't regret it, right? We won't think about what we would have done differently if we had known what would have happened now, right?"
Lu Donglin said "hmm" and nodded heavily.
"Go back to the classroom and cheer up to attend class."
Lu Donglin grinned at her, turned and ran towards the classroom.
Wen Wan returned home from school that morning to find out that the rice had been harvested almost entirely that afternoon. The sun was dim, but at least it hadn't set. Mats had been spread across the flat, stone-milled dam, with the rice spread out to dry. On a clear day, when the ground was damp, the rice could be dried directly on the ground, without the need for mats. Indeed, every commune member had brought in mats from their homes.
After the harvest, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and then they hoped that God would be kinder and not let it rain. It would be best if there were two sunny days to dry out the moisture in the rice, and then they would not have to worry anymore.
The weather in September was not very good, but it finally got better in mid-October. After several days, the sun finally broke through the layers of obstacles and completely got rid of the clouds and mist. It shone brightly, warming the earth and making people feel warm too.
After school on Saturday afternoon, Zhang Hongying had already cooked dinner at home. After dinner, she called Lu Chun'e and her brother to the private plot to pick peppers, while Wen Wan went to the bamboo forest to do some laundry. The weather was bad, and there was nowhere to hang the laundry. Even if they did, it wouldn't dry for a while, and when it did, it smelled worse than if it hadn't been washed.
She had never had so many clothes before. Not counting Lu Dongping's, she had two sets of her own, and together with Lu Dongping's, the basket was full.
When passing by Lu Minghai's house, Gao Xiulan called her: "Wanwan, have you eaten yet?"
Wen Wan stopped and said, "I've eaten. Aunt, why are you eating now?"
Gao Xiulan held the bowl and said, "The meal is ready. We have to wait for them to come back. Are we going to do the laundry?"
"Yes, I'm doing laundry. The weather's bad, so there's a lot of clothes piled up. Now that the sun's out, I'm going to wash them and dry them in the sun."
After saying that, Wen Wan looked towards the main room again: "It's been several days, and I haven't visited the child. Has he grown better? Is he well behaved?"
Gao Xiulan smiled and said, "He's very well behaved. As long as he's fed well and has his diaper changed, he won't cry or make a fuss even when he's awake."
Wen Wan nodded and smiled: "That's indeed good, it's better to be good, so that the adults will suffer less and worry less."
After saying that, he waved to Gao Xiulan and said, "Aunt, you have your meal. I'm leaving now!"
Gao Xiulan nodded in response. The smile on her face faded only after she turned and walked away. She glanced towards the main room, thinking of Li Laiying and the child. Suddenly, she felt full and could not eat the rice in the bowl.
The reason was simple: Li Laiying was unwilling to breastfeed her child, saying that she had no milk and it would hurt too much to pinch her breasts.
We have all been through this before. Who hasn't given birth to children? When the first child is breastfeeding, you have to pinch the breasts to make them breastfeed. Without pinching, how can you produce milk? It will definitely hurt, but no matter how painful it is, once you have a child and become a mother, you have to feed the child. If you don't breastfeed, how can the child survive?
