Chapter 160: The Sticky Couple
The yellow mud road was not very flat, and Lu Dongping was not riding very fast. Wen Wan leaned on his shoulder and felt very comfortable. She looked at the outline of his jaw and even reached out to pinch it playfully. Then she covered her mouth and yawned: "Lu Dongping, I'm sleepy and want to take a nap."
"Well, go to sleep. When you fall asleep, I will leave you on the side of the road."
Wen Wan snorted: "If you lose it, I wonder where you can find someone as good as me again."
After she finished speaking, without waiting for Lu Dongping to speak, she said, "Lu Dongping, haven't I sung a song for you before? Let me sing a song for you." Singing can make her feel more energetic. She was really afraid that she would fall asleep.
Lu Dongping raised his eyebrows: "Okay, I heard you say before that you played the piano and sang at home, and now I can listen to it."
After hearing what he said, Wen Wan felt a little embarrassed.
However, she only felt embarrassed for a moment. After all, she had sung in front of all the teachers and students in the school before, so she would not feel so embarrassed when singing to one person now.
She lowered her voice, and a soft yet clear voice with a soothing melody rang out: "Не слышны в саду даже шорохи,
Всё здесь замерло до утра——”
Although Lu Dongping didn't understand a single word she was singing, it didn't stop him from appreciating his wife's beautiful voice and the tune of the song. It was truly beautiful. The little girl had indeed learned to sing. Her voice was naturally endearing, drawing people in and letting them fall in love with her.
"Deep at night, the garden is quiet, the leaves no longer rustle—" As she sang "Moscow Evening," Wenwan, forced by habit, spoke Russian, a language she hadn't spoken in a long time. After singing a paragraph, she came back to her senses, thinking that Lu Dongping might not understand, so she simply finished the song and then sang it again.
This was her favorite song in high school.
"My sweetheart sat beside me, silently looking at me. I wanted to speak, but I didn't know how. So many words remained in my heart."
Different from the red songs they learned, the tune of this song is soft and soothing yet cheerful. What is revealed between the lines is the unrestrainedness, passion and many other things that the children at that ignorant age yearned for in their hearts.
As for Lu Dongping, the only song he had ever sung in his life was the national anthem. He'd heard most of the folk songs the laborers in the team sang at the top of their lungs while working. The lyrics were full of both vulgar and vegetarian content, and this was the first time he'd heard lyrics and a tune as beautiful as these.
When the song ended, Wenwan hummed it again in Russian, feeling unsatisfied and nostalgic. Before she finished, the sound of a tractor clacking could be heard from behind.
The gentle voice suddenly stopped, and Lu Dongping slowed down and moved to the side of the road to make way for the tractor.
Old acquaintance.
Liu Dacai, sitting on the tractor, called out to him from a distance, "Hey, Secretary Lu, are you going to the city with your wife too?"
Lu Dongping nodded: "Yes, I can take a break for a while and go to the city to buy some things."
Liu Dacai wanted to stop the tractor: "Secretary Lu, can you give me a ride?" There was a lot of space behind the tractor, so it was no problem for two more people to fit in the car.
Lu Dongping asked Wen Wan: "Do you want to ride a tractor?"
Wen Wan hurriedly shook her head: "No, no." She had ridden a tractor twice in total, and the memory was still fresh in her mind. The bumpy ride was so painful that it made her heart ache. It was not as comfortable as riding a bicycle.
She didn't want to ride with Lu Dongping, so she turned down Liu Dacai: "Thank you, you go first, we'll ride behind you."
"That's fine too. I'll be leaving first!"
As the two were talking, the person behind the tractor was looking up and down at Lu Dongping and Wen Wan. It was obvious at a glance that they were a newly married couple. They were so affectionate and even hugged each other while riding a bike. These young people nowadays are very bold and not shy at all.
It was not until the tractor had passed the bicycle by a long way and the two people could no longer be seen that they began to chat with each other.
After the tractor drove away, Lu Dongping asked Wen Wan, "What was the name of the song you just sang?"
"Moscow Evenings."
Wen Wan replied and continued, "It's a very famous and beautiful Soviet song. Moscow is a very famous place in the Soviet Union. When I was in school, I learned Russian, and this was the first and most complete Russian song I learned. It's also my favorite."
"Russian? That's the thing you sang at the beginning—"
Lu Dongping found that he had been listening for a long time but didn't understand a single word.
Wen Wan was so happy: "Yes, that's it."
Lu Dongping let go of the handlebars and pinched her waist, frightening Wen Wan so much that she screamed, "Ride your bike, ride carefully, or you'll fall!"
Lu Dongping would never bear to drop her, he just wanted to scare her. Even if he really dropped her, he would not hurt her. Lu Dongping would lie down under her and protect her from any harm.
After some laughter, Lu Dongping asked, "Have you also learned Russian? What else have you learned?"
"I know a little bit of French. I learned it from my third aunt. Just a little bit."
Lu Dongping was a little interested: "Well, when you have time, teach me? That Russian? No, teach me the song you just sang?"
Wen Wan turned around and glanced at him with a smile: "I taught you to sing it for me?"
Lu Dongping said "hmm".
"Then if I teach you, you will be my student, right? You should call me Teacher Wen."
Lu Dongping raised his eyebrows, looked at her meaningfully, then leaned over and whispered in her ear, "You're a teacher during the day, but not at night. Isn't that right, little teacher?" His voice rose slightly, and the word "little teacher" sounded vulgar when he called it. Wen Wan covered her ears with her hands and didn't want to listen to him anymore.
After chatting and laughing on the way, they finally arrived at the commune after more than two hours. Lu Dongping returned the car, then walked home with Wen Wan, carrying a sack in each hand.
Wen Wan felt a little embarrassed to walk empty-handed, so she simply joined hands with him to help him carry one end of the sack. He held the sack in one hand and pulled it with the other, walking and stopping. After walking a short distance, Wen Wan couldn't bear it anymore.
The pace of the two of them was not coordinated, one long and the other short. Lu Dongping tried to slow down and wait for her, but he couldn't stand her chasing him all the time, and he was panting and exhausted.
It was already late when they got home. Lu Dongping was carrying two sacks, and Wen Wan was holding the wild chrysanthemums they had picked along the way. The yellow flowers were small and grew in dense clusters. They were very beautiful and had a light fragrance.
The sun had just set. Lu Mingjiang and Zhang Hongying had not returned from the wheat field after rubbing corn. Lu Chun'e had also gone there. As for Lu Donglin, he was probably still running around in the mountains.
Lu Dongping carried the bag into the yard, placed it outside the new house, and then opened the kitchen door to retrieve an aluminum basin. By the time Wen Wan opened the door and brought Juhua inside, he had already taken the bag out. No wonder it was so heavy; it wasn't just meat and liver, but also a lot of pork parts: intestines, stomach, heart, lungs, and two dried pig's trotters.
The smell was quite strong, and Wen Wan couldn't help but step back: "Why buy so much? What are we going to do with all this? It's not time to roast a fire yet, so we can't smoke it!"
Lu Dongping said, "Give one set of pig liver to my uncle's family, and keep one set for our family. I'll also dry it and grind it into powder for you. You can add some salt to rice and eat it. I think it will taste good."
Wen Wan laughed: "Am I treated the same as Chuyi?"
"Can you be like her?" Lu Dongping stood up, threw the blood-stained sack into the basin and said, "Chuyi is a poor little girl who is not even wanted by her own mother. You are different." As he spoke, he took a step forward, put his dirty hands on the side, lowered his head and touched her forehead to tease her, "You are my little baby!"
Wen Wan - This man is becoming more and more dishonest. Even when he wants to coax someone, he has to consider the place and time, right?
He muttered, "Your hands are covered in blood. I'll scoop some water for you, wash them quickly." He ran to the kitchen in a hurry with a red face.
Lu Dongping was laughing foolishly by himself. He went outside the yard, pulled out a few palm leaves, and tied up all the miscellaneous things. Then he went to wash his hands. He rinsed the sacks with the water and hung them on the firewood pile beside the yard to dry.
Lu Dongping didn't touch the other pocket, so Wen Wan went to search it herself. When she put her hand in, she felt something was wrong. When she took out the malted milk box, she found that there were other things inside, a pack of crispy mooncakes wrapped in oil paper, and a pack of candy.
"Lu Dongping, did you buy candy and mooncakes?"
Lu Dongping hummed, "I was so busy on the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the weather was so bad, I didn't even see the moon. I almost forgot it existed. This is your first time celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival here. I hadn't remembered it at first, but then I saw it when I was buying malted milk, so I bought a pound."
After saying that, he picked up the pork liver and malted milk and said, "I'm going to my aunt's place before daybreak. You clean up first." After saying that, he left the yard.
Wen Wan looked at the oil-paper bag in her hand and silently took it into the house.
Lu Dongping went out and gave the things to Gao Xiulan and came back. He hung the pig liver in the kitchen, and put the heart, lungs, pig trotters, pig intestines and other things in a basin. He took them directly to the bamboo forest. There was no shortage of water there, so it would be easier to wash.
Few people know how to make these things, and they're incredibly troublesome to clean, so they're really not worth much. If someone wants the meat, they just give it to them. If no one wants it, they throw it away, leaving plenty of stray dogs to pluck at it. The dogs nearby are all well-fed and live better than humans, because they're the ones eating shit!
When he took it, he stroked it a bit and rinsed it briefly, but the smell was still very strong.
Lu Dongping rubbed it over and over again with an old loofah, waiting until the water was completely clear. Then he carried it back, poured some vinegar and put some ginger in it to soak.
It really takes some effort to eat this. A few years ago, when he was in the mountains, he would catch pheasants and pull out the intestines from their stomachs. But now he never took such effort. He just rinsed it with water, put it on the fire, smeared it inside, and stuffed it into his stomach.
