Chapter 4: First Meal Upon Arrival
As soon as Lu Minghai left, Liu Changqing went into the shed next to him and poured the leftover rice from yesterday into the pot. Thinking that there were two more people, he simply added some water, sprinkled some cornmeal in and stirred it, and put a little salt in when cooking.
After finishing, he called out, "Zhu Feng, Wen Wan, take your bowls. No one else is eating!"
Wen Wan heard the sound and hurried into the house to get her lunch box. She had two lunch boxes, both of which were full, and she couldn't use either of them at the moment. After thinking about it, she could only use the teacup for drinking water instead temporarily.
She took a look at the contents of the lunch box, thought for a while, scooped out a little with a spoon, put it in a jar, and took it out.
"Comrade Liu Changqing, Comrade Wang Jianmao, Comrade Zhu Feng, my family brought me some food when I left. Let's each have some!"
Wang Jianmao said with a smile: "What's delicious?" He leaned over to take a look and exclaimed: "Good stuff." It turned out to be dried meat, which is really precious.
Liu Changqing also took a look, thought for a moment, and then said, "This thing can be stored for a long time. You should keep it for yourself. The countryside is different from the city. It's rare to see meat throughout the year. If you eat it all at once, you won't be able to eat it again if you want it."
Wen Wan said: "I didn't take much, I just gave it to everyone to try. I didn't have anything for my first meal, so how can this be considered my food allowance?"
Having said that, Liu Changqing didn't insist. After all, dried meat is made of meat, and he hadn't eaten meat for a long time.
As for Zhu Feng, no one asked for his opinion, so just follow the crowd!
There weren't many, just two pieces the length of his finger joints. Wang Jianmao chewed them again and again in his mouth and was reluctant to swallow them.
Wen Wan looked at the rice in the jar and felt really confused. Is this thing edible?
Fortunately, I didn't scoop much, so I could swallow it even with my eyes squinting, and my mouth was full of a sticky taste.
Looking at Liu Changqing and Wang Jianmao, they were wolfing down their food, finishing the rice in their bowls in a few gulps and ordering a second bowl. Liu Changqing was still shouting, "Who of you wants more? Wen Wan, do you want more? You won't last until the afternoon if you eat that little."
Wen Wan held the jar and shook her head hurriedly: "No, no, I've had enough. You guys eat more. You have to go to work. I don't have to work today, so I don't need to eat so much."
Liu Changqing didn't bother to be polite with her. He scraped the bottom of the pot directly into the bowl. After finishing his meal, he washed the pots and bowls, and then went to the warehouse to get a pickaxe to go to the field.
Wen Wan followed behind and took a look. She found that there was actually someone in the warehouse who was specifically looking after things. She was a young woman with a cadre-style hairstyle and wearing a Lenin suit that was washed to a pale color. After taking the things for Liu Changqing and Wang Jianmao, she turned around and picked up the bamboo sticks to start knitting a sweater.
Wen Wan waited until both of them left before she came over and called out, "Sister, are you specifically here to look after the warehouse?"
Hu Xiujuan looked up at the girl in front of her and was stunned for a moment, then smiled and nodded: "Are you the newly arrived educated youth?" What a pretty girl, but no matter how pretty she is, it will only last for this winter, and sooner or later she will be changed by the hardships of rural life.
Wen Wan nodded: "I just arrived. I came here last night." After that, she looked at the things in her hand and said: "I can do this too. I can do many different things."
Hu Xiujuan's eyes lit up: "Then teach me!" She hadn't touched this thing for many years, and she could only barely plant a flat needle. It would be great if someone who knew about this could talk to her.
Wen Wan took the skewer she had just started and spun it quickly with her hands: "What kind of knitting do you want? Double thread and minute stitches or color matching and pattern knitting?"
Hu Xiujuan said: "I only remember the flat stitch now and I'm still trying to figure it out."
Wen Wan chattered as she taught her two knitting methods, then stopped: "Then you practice first. I still have to go to the commune. I haven't bought any things yet, and I have to start work tomorrow. If you want to start later, you can come find me. We're not far away anyway."
Hu Xiujuan nodded: "Go and get busy!"
Wen Wan trotted to the educated youth site not far away.
Now everyone has gone to work, and suddenly there are only two of them left at the educated youth site.
Zhu Feng packed up the things he brought with him in the house. When he went out and saw her, he sighed and called out, "Comrade Wen Wan, my name is Zhu Feng. I came from the capital and I'm 21 years old this year." Really, she didn't even give him a chance to introduce himself. It dragged on from early morning until now, and the sun has already come out.
Wen Wan smiled and nodded: "Hello, Comrade Zhu Feng."
After saying that, he looked at Tiandao and said, "It's still early. I'll go boil some water. If you have kettles in your rooms, take them out and fill them up. It will be useful when they get back from work."
Zhu Feng nodded: "Okay, then I'll go chop firewood." He had to do something, otherwise he would feel embarrassed to eat with them.
