Chapter 79: Angry
Wen Wan hummed a song while carrying a backpack on her back. She had already learned that she didn't need a basket to pull the pig grass. She could just raise her hand and throw it into the backpack behind her. However, the backpack of Lu Dongping's family was a bit big. From the back, only the two lower legs were moving, and from the top, only the tip of the head was left.
The small creek was quite long and winding, and Wen Wan found it a bit tiring to walk along it. There was more and more grass in the backpack, so she simply leaned the backpack against a clump of willow trees, where there were a lot of water celery and watercress. There were also a lot of dandelions and sorrel on the embankment near the wheat field.
Just as she put the backpack down steadily, a small stone flew from above and hit her toes. She looked up and saw Lu Dongping squatting on the edge of the field and smiling at her.
"Hey, have you eaten yet? Why are you still here? Shouldn't you have already started work? Is it okay if you're late?"
Lu Dongping jumped down from the edge of the field, reached out and hugged her, and bent down to kiss her.
Wen Wan scared him so much that his heart almost jumped out of his throat.
Fortunately, Lu Dongping didn't really want to kiss her. Even when he hugged her, he only hugged her for a moment before letting go. This was outside, and it would be bad if someone saw them. Although he wanted to do it in his heart and even dreamed about it, he could never find the right opportunity.
In addition to the night of New Year's Eve, there were two other times when he sent her to the educated youth camp. Because it was later than usual and it was completely dark, Lu Dongping didn't care so much. The little girl's legs became weak and her whole body hung limply on him. He didn't even dare to think about the moaning sound from her mouth. Just thinking about it made his blood boil and a heat rushed up and down.
"It's not too late, let's go now. I got something good for you, let's go back and see it?"
Wen Wan's curiosity was immediately piqued by him: "What is it?"
"You'll know when you get back."
As he spoke, he helped her carry the basket on her back: "Let's go, go a little further, closer to the weir, there's grass in the wheat field over there."
Wen Wan followed him and asked, "Are the new educated youth also repairing the weir today?"
"Them? They went to the fields today and followed me to pick the bumps with hoes." They just arrived and have a lot on their minds. It's easier to manage them if we put them together and keep them under our noses.
Besides, repairing the weir requires going into the water. Although it was warm at noon that day, the water was still freezing cold. Those educated youth coming here would be of no use except blocking the way.
The so-called weir heads are relatively high, higher than the entire Lujiazui fields. They are built with stones and yellow mud to store water. During the rice planting season, water is diverted from the canal to the fields.
However, July and August every year are the flood season. In order to prevent the rice fields from being washed away, the openings of the canals will be blocked and the river channels will be dug to release floodwaters. The canals will be easily washed away by a flood, so we have to take time to repair them at this time every spring.
We just had to wait until the sun rose higher and it got warmer, and then some young and strong guys in the team would go and dig yellow mud and fill it with stones. The water was up to their thighs and they were frozen stiff. That's how it was, with twelve people dividing the work, and it took most of the day, and there were still many people doing it.
Lu Dongping found a good spot for Wen Wan, especially one facing the sun. Near the edge of the field were two forsythia trees, already in full bloom, a brilliant yellow. Having been here for so long, this was the first time she'd seen such gorgeous blossoms. Wen Wan was so delighted that she climbed up from the wheat field before Lu Dongping left, hooked a branch, and broke off two.
"I'm going to go, it's right up there, just around the corner. Just pull it up and put it here."
Wen Wan promised him everything before leaving.
He wanted to ask Wen Wan to call him when she was ready, but he knew that the little girl was shy and there were only men over there, so he gave up. He came over at the right time and arrived in the time it took to pee.
Wen Wan enjoyed the flowers in her hand enough, made a wreath and put it on her head before starting to pick pig grass. She used a small shovel to rub the ground and scoop up the pig grass, piling it together. When she was almost done, she turned around and put it into the backpack.
When her backpack was full, she climbed the slope again using her hands and feet, and picked a bunch of forsythia. She thought happily about finding something to put in the house. The thought of being able to see beautiful things at a glance made her happy.
Her joy was not over for a few minutes when she remembered that she was not living alone now and only had a small place to sleep. She had no place to put the flowers if she took them back. However, she still couldn't bear to throw them away. She could take them to Lu Dongping's house and give them to Chun'e. Chun'e would definitely like them.
She returned home relatively early in the afternoon and took a look at the educated youth site. She had left early in the morning and did not lock the door, nor did she leave the key, so the lock on the door was hung but not locked.
The big bed in the room was a mess. One could imagine how hurriedly those people got up. Wenwan was used to keeping things tidy, and when she saw the messy bed and the basins scattered around it, she couldn't help but want to clean it up. She couldn't help herself for a long time and simply hung the door shut again, hoping that out of sight, out of mind.
Deng Hongjuan and the other three did get up late. They were so hungry last night that they couldn't fall asleep until the second half of the night. They fell asleep because they were extremely sleepy. When Wen Wan got up in the morning, she was still soundly sleepy. Liu Changqing and the others had prepared the meal and knocked on the door before they woke her up. When they got up, they realized they were late. They washed their faces hastily, tidied themselves up, ate a big pot meal that was hard to swallow, and then went to get the farm tools and go to the fields.
Liu Changqing and the others naturally couldn't wait for them to be late, so they ran away early along with several male educated youth.
By the time they arrived at the field, the sun was already high in the sky.
Wen Wan didn't go to the shed to check. If she had, she would have known that the stove was a mess. Not only were their lunch boxes not washed, but there was not even water in the pot. They just kept working because they had things to do after work anyway.
It didn’t matter at all that Wen Wan didn’t eat here. What mattered was Xu Qingming. He felt like his head was about to explode.
I went to work, but I was a little uncomfortable. My hands were sore after holding the hoe all day. Everything else was fine, but I got annoyed when I arrived at the educated youth site.
Girls like Zhang Yun who came from the city, no matter how poor their family conditions were, were from working-class families. They knew how to cook and wash clothes, but this was their first time working in the fields.
There is no land for them to farm in the city. Even if a family with better conditions has a vegetable garden, it is only enough space to grow two rows of vegetables, so they don't need to do anything.
They held the hoe and slacked off, but they still spent the whole day working in the field pretending to be serious. They were also scolded by Lu Minghai, and their original four-point work was cut in half to only two points. The female educated youth were so angry that they collapsed on the spot.
Everyone was exhausted after work in the afternoon. When Liu Changqing came back and saw the messy stove and the dry pot that couldn't be cleaned with a shovel, he got furious. He didn't care about etiquette and blocked the female educated youth's door directly, speaking without any courtesy.
Zhang Yun was thin-skinned and burst into tears after hearing his words. She dragged her legs, which were so sore that she couldn't lift them, to the shed to wash her lunch box, and added water to the pot. It took her a long time to light the fire and heat the water in the pot. She washed the pot and cooked while crying. Her eyes were swollen from crying.
Wen Wan had no idea how exciting things were here. She took the key given by Lu Dongping and went to Lu's house. She didn't open the door to the main room, but opened the door to the kitchen.
While it was still light, I saw the pig grass piled under the eaves, took some and fed it to the rabbits in the chicken coop, and then thought about chopping the pig grass myself.
However, the pig grass knife was a bit heavy, and she felt it was difficult and dangerous to hold it, so she simply took the vegetable cutting knife from the stove and sat on a small stool to cut the pig grass.
When Lu Chun'e and Lu Donglin came back from school, she had already cut a large pile of them, and they were cut into very small pieces. Lu Chun'e thought that if she scalded them with boiling water, the pig would not even need to chew them and could just swallow them directly.
Lu Donglin came back early. As soon as the sun set, he came back staggering with a backpack on his back. As soon as he entered the yard, Wen Wan saw his wet pants.
The young man was very enthusiastic. He took off his woolen trousers and put on autumn trousers and single pants in the early spring. Now they were almost soaked.
He carried a backpack and something in his hands: two thin willow branches that had just sprouted. He had peeled off the outer layer of bark with green buds and strung two strings of fish on them: whitebait about the length of a finger, crucian carp, and silver carp. There were no large fish in the spring.
Lu Donglin yelled and rushed over: "Fish, fish, fish! Brother, you caught another fish! Aren't there a lot of fish in the deep pool at the weir head?"
Lu Dongping let go of the fish and threw it to him: "Don't you know whether it's a lot or not? Go and cut it open. I'll make fish soup tonight."
Lu Donglin was so happy that he almost jumped up. He picked up Yu and went to find the basin, then ran to the bamboo forest.
Lu Dongping put the backpack under the eaves.
Wen Wan called out to him, "Go change quickly, you're all wet. Are you cold? I'll make some fire to warm you up."
"It's okay, I'm not cold!"
As soon as I came back, I heard her soft voice and saw the concern in her eyes. Why was I still cold? How could a grown man be afraid of this little cold?
I went into the house and quickly changed my pants and shoes, and my legs finally felt a little warm.
There was still some light in the room. He glanced at the two pockets he had placed on the bedside box, took out his wet pants and put them in the basin, then called Wen Wan, "Wan Wan, do you want me to sort out the things I bought in the county town the day before yesterday?"
Wen Wan turned around to look at him, stunned. She wanted to drag him over and give him a rub: "You haven't given it to your aunt yet?"
Lu Dongping smiled and said, "You know what the things you bought are used for, but I don't. Just look at what you need and give it to her."
"Oh!" Wen Wan followed him into the house.
The last time I came to Lu Dongping's house was in the morning. I was not in a good mood and didn't notice what the house looked like at all. Now I can see it almost clearly.
It was quite simple, with old earthen walls that were slightly blackened, the roof was hoisted, and the dark windows were open, which were the only places where light could penetrate.
Next to the windowsill was a black lacquered wooden table, and then there was the bed against the wall, with one end against the wall and the other end supported by a shelf with a brown wooden box on it.
Her backpack and the things she bought were placed on top of the box.
Lu Dongping reached out and took the cloth out of his pocket. At the bottom were the basin and bowl.
"Give the basin and bowl to your aunt, they will definitely be useful at home.
Wen Wan stretched out her hand and flipped through it: "I'll use this color to make clothes for you..."
Before he could finish his words, he was hugged.
