Chapter 18 She hangs out with the lowlifes

Something was sent from home, so Su Yuhe had to go to the post office.

After getting the package, Su Yuhe rushed to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy vegetables. He spent all the food coupons he brought with him without feeling any burden, because there must be more food coupons in the package sent from home.

After leaving the supply and marketing cooperative, Su Yuhe went to a state-owned restaurant to buy some big steamed buns. She didn't need to make a staple food in the evening, and just eating them with chili sauce would be enough for a meal.

You don’t need tickets to buy food in state-owned restaurants, but you do need food coupons to buy rice and steamed buns.

Su Yuhe used the food coupons and money to buy two large steamed buns and a pound of meat buns, spending 70 cents.

Meat hot pot was not part of her plan, but she wanted to eat it when she saw it. It was 56 cents per pound, which was not cheap, but she still bought it.

She ate one while it was hot. It was filled with pure pork and tasted crispy, fragrant and juicy.

There were about ten pieces in a pound. She ate one and took another one. Just as she took a bite, it was pulled away by something that came out from nowhere.

It really is running away!

Su Yuhe looked at the running little thing in shock. It was about the height of her hips. When she looked closely, she realized it was not an animal, but a child!

She frowned. This child had no manners at all. He stole her things in broad daylight, and she just ran after him. Don't tell her to just let it go as it's just a child.

Her money was also earned by her parents, so why should it be robbed?

Su Yuhe was full, and even though she was carrying more than ten pounds of things, she caught up with the child after running for a short time. The child ran into a house in an alley where the sunlight could not penetrate.

The child seemed to be unaware that Su Yuhe was following him and didn't even close the door.

Su Yuhe walked straight in. There was a small yard piled with a lot of useless junk. She heard a voice coming from the inner room: "Grandpa, have some hot cakes."

A weak and hoarse old man's voice slowly said: "You eat, you eat, Grandpa is not hungry."

When Su Yuhe walked in, she saw an old man lying on the kang. The child who had robbed her things was standing beside the kang, holding a piece of meat and handing it to the old man.

The child was covered in dirt, and his round head was covered with dry, light yellow hair that looked like a bird's nest.

The old man saw her and immediately became defensive: "Who are you?"

The child turned around, eyes wide open, put the fire on the kang, ran out and pushed Su Yuhe: "Get out! Get out!"

Su Yuhe: "Hey! You little brat, you stole my meat and kicked me out? Don't you have an adult at home to teach you?"

The old man on the kang struggled to sit up, slightly angry: "Dandan! Are you stealing, ahem, stealing things?"

The child cried at the top of his lungs, "But there's nothing to eat. Grandpa is hungry."

Su Yuhe saw that the old man looked very ill and old, as if he would collapse at any second. He coughed until his face turned red: "Ahem~ I'm sorry, girl, Dandan apologizes!"

The child hugged Su Yuhe's legs and knelt down, begging her: "Sister, sister, Dandan was wrong, please don't scold grandpa."

The house was simple, but clean. Only the yard outside was a mess. Seeing the old man Chi Mu and a child, Su Yuhe couldn't help but think of her son. Her heart softened and she pulled the child up: "Alright, I didn't scold your grandfather. Just don't steal things anymore."

The child sobbed and his stomach growled.

Su Yuhe couldn't bear it any longer, so she handed a meat bun to the child and said, "Eat it."

The child washed his nose and looked back at the old man. The old man felt under his pillow and took out a very tattered five-cent coin. He handed it to the old man with shaking hands and said, "Here, exchange it with your sister."

The child gave the money to Su Yuhe and looked at her with tearful eyes.

Su Yuhe knew that the child would definitely not want to eat the food if she didn't take it, so she simply took the five cents. The child handed the new, still warm cake to the old man and ate the cold meat bun he had snatched.

Su Yuhe could see that the old man was sick, but she didn't ask any more questions because she thought of the five cents that was rotten to pieces. It was obvious that he was in a very difficult situation. If he was really rich, he wouldn't have snatched food from him without even seeing a doctor.

She sighed slightly and put the two big steamed buns on the table.

She was not a saint. This was the greatest kindness she could offer. She could see that the old man had his own temper. If she gave him too much, he would not take it.

Two big steamed buns are left, and the rest is up to their fate.

In this day and age, it is not uncommon for people to get sick from hunger or die from starvation.

Su Yuhe left the courtyard.

Su Yuhe went back with another big bag of things and got off the car at the village entrance. As soon as she got off, she saw Jiang Lin standing under a tree.

The car drove away, and Jiang Lin came over to help Su Yuhe get her things.

Su Yuhe was so happy that she gave him a sigh of relief: "Why are you here? Are you waiting for me?"

Jiang Lin didn't say anything. He didn't see Su Yuhe at work in the afternoon. After asking someone, he found out that Su Yuhe had taken leave to go to the county town to pick up a package.

Su Yuhe would definitely buy some food when she went to the county town. Jiang Lin knew that she would definitely buy more than ten or twenty kilograms of food, so he estimated the time and waited at the village entrance.

He has never been good at taking credit, so he didn't say anything.

Su Yuhe didn't care. Talking about the incident that happened in the city today, she sighed, "That kid is quite pitiful."

Jiang Lin frowned. He had seen people starving to death, so he didn't have any special thoughts. Everyone was having a hard time these days, and that kid was snatching things around. Su Yuhe was so thin, what if she pushed him down and bumped into something?

Or are they some evil people with malicious intentions?

Jiang Lin glanced at her and said, "Be careful next time. What if a bad guy deliberately leads you in?"

"I understand." Su Yuhe was actually a little scared. How could she be so bold to chase in?

The educated youth selected a few others to sit at the door and pick vegetables. They were chatting, but when they saw Su Yuhe coming back with Jiang Lin, they all stopped talking, but looked at them as if they were exploring something interesting.

Because of Luo Yan's misconduct, the female squad leader was replaced by an educated youth who was about thirty years old.

As the new squad leader, Dai Chunhua loved to take the lead. When no one else spoke, it was her chance to speak. She was very enthusiastic: "Su Zhiqing, you're back."

Su Yuhe nodded, took the things from Jiang Lin, and asked him to go back first.

Jiang Lin nodded, turned around and left without looking at the educated youth.

All the educated youth knew Jiang Lin's background. His ancestors were famous landlords in the area within a radius of ten miles, but later fell into decline. If this background were made public, even dogs would dislike him.

Some of the educated youth from the city naturally couldn't stand it. Plus, Su Yuhe usually kept to herself, aside from Xu Yun, and acted aloof. It was inevitable that some people would speak with a sense of superiority: "Su Zhiqing, why are you with that guy? You know he's a bad guy, don't you? How did you get involved with him?"

Xu Yun knew that Jiang Lin had saved Su Yuhe and thought he was a good person. He said, "Deng Zhiqing, your words are too hurtful. No matter what your background is, as long as you work hard, you are a glorious farmer."

Deng Mei turned her head and said, "Xu Zhiqing, why are you speaking up for her? If she gets involved with that scoundrel, what will happen if we get into trouble and it affects the Zhiqing team?"
