Chapter 14 Springtime - Epilogue
These past few days, Zhao Xuan and Lu An have been busy planting the vegetables they need. Melons like winter melons are readily available in the village, so they don't need to be planted. What they need are some chili peppers, eggplants, cowpeas, and other plants that require some attention.
Some of the seeds were collected by them in the fall, and some were left over from farmers' homes.
The vegetable garden is only about half an acre long. It's very close to home, so it's easy to harvest the vegetables anytime. It's just a little far from the stream, so watering it will probably be a bit more troublesome in the future.
But none of that matters; they have plenty of time.
The two have been in good spirits lately. Food is plentiful and the crops are growing well. Compared to the days when they were starving last winter, they are now able to enjoy their daily lives.
After planting the vegetables, if they had time, she and Lu An would go to the rice paddies further away. The rice had grown quite tall, as had the weeds in the fields, which needed to be removed from time to time. The fields were still filled with water, and they needed to wear rain boots to enter, making weeding much more troublesome than weeding the few acres of crops in the dry land.
The weather was already quite hot, and the midday sun was beginning to show signs of summer's power. The surrounding greenery was becoming increasingly lush, and compared to the early spring, which was mixed with touches of earth, the end of the season seemed to be covered with a thick blanket, with verdant greenery everywhere.
This was a short period of slack farming season. Sometimes Zhao Xuan and Lu An would wander around with a water jug on their backs. Mushrooms and bamboo shoots were still growing sparsely. Sometimes they would pick a handful to eat when they saw them. Vegetables growing wildly in the village were gradually increasing. Winter melons and pumpkins had already produced fist-sized fruits. If you didn't mind the astringency, you could also pick and eat small cucumbers.
One of the hens in the coop has started brooding, and I expect a brood of chicks will be born soon. It just means we won't be able to eat eggs for a long time, but we'll have enough pork, so it's not a big problem.
The task of finding pig feed and feeding the pigs was assigned to Lu An. Zhao Xuan would cook every day and then take a walk with Lu An to digest their food.
These lonely yet peaceful days lasted for a long time, so tranquil that Zhao Xuan often mistakenly thought that she and Lu An were the only two humans left in the world.
Soon, the Beginning of Summer arrived.
