Car accident
When Zhou Jingxing arrived at the hospital, Shen Zhou was still in the operating room. Zhou's father was sitting on a bench in the corridor with a gauze pad on his forehead. He looked like he had also been injured, but it didn't seem too serious.
Zhou Jingxing got out of the taxi and ran all the way from the hospital gate. His shirt was soaked with sweat, whether from fear or from running.
Sweat beaded on his forehead, and he was still breathing heavily as he bombarded Zhou's father with questions: "How is Chen Zhou now? What happened with the car accident you mentioned on the phone? Didn't he go to work? How come he's with you?"
Zhou's father probably felt a little guilty, and unusually refrained from criticizing Zhou Jingxing for disrespecting his father. "Chen Zhou is still in the operating room. He was injured in the car accident and broke his left arm. The doctor said he has to have a minor operation."
Zhou Jingxing couldn't believe it. "Minor surgery? Such a serious car accident, and a minor surgery can solve it?" He asked his father with a dark face, "Dad, you still haven't answered me why Shen Zhou was in the car accident!"
The father was stung by his father's questioning tone. His face turned ashen. "What do you mean! You suspect that I deliberately injured him? Let me tell you, this car accident was just an accident! Chen Zhou was driving me to a meeting. When he swerved to avoid an electric scooter that suddenly ran a red light at an intersection, he crashed into the green belt. I was in the car when the accident happened. Would I risk my life to hurt him too?!"
Zhou Jingxing frowned. "That's not what I meant. I just want to know why Chen Zhou is with you. He clearly told me he was going to work this morning."
Zhou's father blurted out, "What else could it be for? Isn't it all for you!"
For me? Zhou Jingxing was stunned, imagining a dramatic scene where his father blocked Shen Zhou downstairs at Shen Zhou's company and arrogantly said, "Take this check and leave my son."
Immersed in the small theater, Zhou Jingxing said to his father with dissatisfaction, "Chen Zhou is an artist, and he's much richer than me. Don't even think about using money to humiliate him!"
"What money? What humiliation? What are you talking about?"
Zhou Jingxing questioned him, "Did you give him a large sum of money to leave me so you could arrange blind dates for me? Shen Zhou would never agree to that. He loves me very much and would never leave me for money!"
Zhou's father was speechless. "Do you look like you're worth a lot of money? Someone like you is lucky that Chen Zhou isn't asking me for money. Why would I go out of my way to give him money?"
Zhou Jingxing seized the opportunity and quickly said, "So you're saying you agree to me being with Chen Zhou?"
Zhou's father's breath hitched, and he immediately scolded, "All you ever do is play clever tricks. Don't try to find a loophole in what I'm saying!" He grabbed the CT scan in his hand, rolled it into a ball, and tapped Zhou Jingxing on the back. "All you do is annoy me. You're so useless! I really don't know what Chen Zhou saw in you?"
Judging from his father's tone, Zhou Jingxing seemed to have softened his stance on his relationship with Shen Zhou. He sat down next to his father, looked at him earnestly, and said, "Dad, Shen Zhou and I are serious. You know me; once I've made up my mind, I'll stick to it no matter what. Please stop arranging blind dates for me; it won't lead anywhere."
Looking at Zhou Jingxing's stubborn eyes, the face in front of him suddenly overlapped with the face in his memory. Zhou's father thought of how Zhou Jingxing looked when he filled out his college application after the college entrance examination.
At the time, Zhou's father hoped that Zhou Jingxing would major in basic biochemistry and then pursue his own research direction, so that he could pour all the connections and resources he had accumulated over the years into him. He optimistically thought that with his guidance and support, and given Zhou Jingxing's own strong comprehension, his son might even surpass him in the future. However, Zhou Jingxing disagreed.
Zhou Jingxing retorted, "I don't want to live under your shadow forever! I can build my own career!"
Zhou's father was furious. He tried everything, but in the end, he couldn't persuade Zhou Jingxing to study cultural relic protection and restoration, a field completely unrelated to his father's. Fortunately, he is now slowly making a name for himself in the industry.
Mr. Zhou looked away, avoiding Zhou Jingxing's eyes. He was struggling internally. Was he really wrong to do what was best for his son?
The operating room door opened, and a nurse came out.
Who are the families of those whose ships sank?
Zhou Jingxing immediately got up and rushed over, "It's me! It's me! How's Chen Zhou? Is he out of danger?"
The nurse was speechless. "This family member is exaggerating. The patient's left arm fracture isn't too serious; it's far from life-threatening. The doctor has already treated the fracture, and the wound will be bandaged soon." She told Zhou Jingxing, "The patient isn't fully awake from anesthesia yet, so a family member needs to push him to the ward in a wheelchair. Please come with me."
Zhou Jingxing breathed a sigh of relief, his heart finally at ease. He obediently followed the nurse to pick up Chen Zhou and take him back to the ward.
Zhou Jingxing carefully placed Chen Zhou on the hospital bed, and Chen Zhou woke up the moment he was put down.
"Jingxing? Where am I... Is the surgery over?"
Zhou Jingxing felt a pang of heartache looking at Chen Zhou's pale lips. He touched Chen Zhou's face and told him, "It's all over. The doctor said you can be discharged and go home after two days of observation in the hospital. How are you feeling? Does your wound hurt?"
Shen Zhou gave him an apologetic smile. "The anesthesia hasn't worn off yet, so the wound doesn't hurt. I'm sorry for making you worry."
Zhou Jingxing kissed his forehead, "Knowing I'll worry, don't do anything dangerous."
Zhou's father couldn't bear to watch any longer. He coughed loudly and said, "I'm relieved that you're alright. I'll be going now." He pointed at Zhou Jingxing and said, "Come with me."
Zhou Jingxing was annoyed that his father was so clueless. "You can walk by yourself. It's easy to get a taxi at the hospital entrance."
Shen Zhou nudged him with his good hand, "Jingxing, go see your uncle off."
Thinking of Zhou's father's opposition to the two of them, and that Shen Zhou's car accident was because he was taking Zhou's father to a conference, Zhou Jingxing's rebellious spirit came over him, "No, you just came out of the operating room, I have to take care of you."
Seeing Zhou's father's expression, Chen Zhou quickly said, "I have another good helper here, no problem. I'll call a nurse if you need anything." Seeing that Zhou Jingxing was unmoved, he pretended to be angry and whispered in Zhou Jingxing's ear, "Go quickly! Otherwise I'll really be angry with you."
Mr. Zhou snorted coldly, "I don't need you to take me. I just have something to tell you. Come or don't come, it's not like I'm the one who regrets it." After saying that, he turned and left.
Chen Zhou got impatient and pinched Zhou Jingxing, "Hurry up and go, I'm already angry!"
So Zhou Jingxing reluctantly walked out, muttering to himself, "If anything happens, ask the nurse for help, I'll be right back."
Zhou Jing walked into the corridor, where his father stood at the end watching him. Zhou Jing walked over and silently followed him downstairs to the small square in the inpatient department.
Seeing that no one was around, Zhou's father bluntly told him, "I'm not going to interfere in your affairs anymore. Do whatever you want."
Zhou Jingxing was stunned by his sudden remark, "Huh?"
"What 'ah'? Shen Zhou has a good temper, so go ahead and mess with him. I'm too lazy to arrange blind dates for you anymore. Don't waste my good student's time," Zhou's father said disdainfully.
Zhou Jingxing was pleasantly surprised, not expecting to get his father's approval so quickly. Then he asked suspiciously, "Was Chen Zhou's arm broken while saving you? Why did you suddenly agree to our request?"
Mr. Zhou angrily said, "I already said the car accident was an accident! He crashed into the green belt on the left, so his left hand was injured. I was sitting in the passenger seat, which is on the right! The car accident happened so suddenly that no one had time to react. How can you say that he was injured while saving me? You've watched too many TV dramas!"
After taking a deep breath, Zhou's father told him, "However, this matter was indeed caused by me. Chen Zhou took that road to take me and got into a car accident."
Zhou Jingxing suddenly realized, "Ah! Right, you haven't told me why Chen Zhou is with you yet!"
Zhou's father paused for a moment before telling him what had happened that morning.
Last night, Mr. Zhou received a call from Shen Zhou, who earnestly expressed his desire to talk in person. Mr. Zhou, maintaining a haughty demeanor, neither agreed nor disagreed. Sure enough, this morning on his way to work, he encountered Shen Zhou, who had been waiting for him at the entrance of the institute. Seeing Shen Zhou's respectful and sincere attitude, Mr. Zhou got into Shen Zhou's car.
In the car, Chen Zhou took out a document and handed it to Zhou's father. Zhou's father took it, puzzled. "What's this?"
Shen Zhou calmly told him, "It was I who drafted the will, and I have already scheduled it for notarization."
Mr. Zhou didn't understand, "Why are you showing me this?"
Shen Zhou moved his fingers and said, "You said before that there is no guarantee for me to be with Jing Xing, and that I will not be able to sign a critical illness notice for him if I get sick in the future. Like Jing Xing, I am willing to be his designated guardian. As long as I live, I will take care of him."
Mr. Zhou's face immediately darkened. "So what? I said I don't agree!"
Shen Zhou continued without changing his expression: "The designated guardian can only guarantee that we can handle all matters related to each other while we are alive. After I die, Jingxing will no longer be able to handle my affairs, including my funeral arrangements and property. Therefore, I made a will, and after my death, all my property and rights will be handed over to Zhou Jingxing for handling."
A blush rose on Shen Zhou's face. "In this way, we will be no different from ordinary couples."
Zhou's father was stunned by his words, and after a long while, he scolded, "Aren't you being ridiculous? Although he is my son, I still have to say this: what if he is a scumbag who cheats people out of money? Are you just going to entrust your whole life and even your death to him like this? Do you even know Zhou Jingxing? Do you trust him that much?!"
Shen Zhou looked at him with unwavering determination, "I believe in him as much as I believe in myself."
Mr. Zhou was taken aback for a moment, then asked again, "You said you two are like a married couple, but married couples have children. Can you have children?"
Chen Zhou smiled and said, "I've thought about it. If Jingxing likes children, we'll adopt one."
Mr. Zhou then asked, "You won't be recognized by the public, and many people will slander you behind your backs. Don't you mind that?"
Chen Zhou shrugged and said casually, "It's impossible to please everyone in life."
Before Zhou's father could say anything more, Chen Zhou spoke up first: "Uncle, as someone who has walked this path, I know how many hardships and dangers there are. If there are difficulties, we will overcome them. As long as Jingxing is by my side, I am not afraid of anything."
