Chapter 270 A Moment of Care

Zhao Zhicheng felt that Lu Chen's condition was a bit strange.

He walked over and confirmed that Lu Chen was alive, but his complexion was indeed not good; he was very pale, like a vampire in a movie.

"Lu Chen, wake up, kid."

Zhao Zhicheng patted Lu Chen and called to him.

Lu Chen groggily opened his eyes and said weakly, "Mom and Dad, I'm sleepy..."

Lu Chen only said one sentence before going back to sleep.

Zhao Zhicheng and Lu Xuelian were somewhat stunned.

"Old Zhao, he mistook us for Old Lu and his wife."

Hearing Lu Chen call them Mom and Dad, Lu Xuelian felt an indescribable bittersweet feeling. No matter what others said about Lu Chen, in her eyes, Lu Chen was a good boy.

The Lu family always said bad things about Lu Chen, and indeed Lu Chen had no friends and was aloof and didn't like to talk much.

His only passion is acting and filming. Once he gets into character, he becomes completely different from his real self. He is sunny, talkative, and intelligent, and he can make people hate him to the core even when he plays a villain.

Lu Xuelian's heart swelled, and she couldn't help but reach out and touch Lu Chen's cheek: "This child, how come he's lost so much weight, and there's no one around to take care of him..."

He must be so lonely living in such a big villa.

"The sun isn't too strong now, and it'll be good for him to get some sunshine and absorb some vital energy, so we won't call him."

Zhao Zhicheng looked at the sky. It wouldn't rain today, and the sun wasn't too strong either, so it would be nice to bask in the sun.

“Old Zhao, let’s tidy up this place for him. Go buy a rooster and I’ll make him some soup. This kid, it breaks my heart to see him like this. I won’t feel at ease going back without doing something for him.”

Lu Xuelian looked at Zhao Zhicheng and said that she knew this suggestion was a bit excessive.

After all, Lu Chen wasn't their child, and their own daughter was now facing a lawsuit.

But she just couldn't bring herself to hate Lu Chen; seeing him like this made her feel sorry for him.

She had felt this heartache ever since the two families became godparents, but she never dared to say it, for fear that others would think she was going crazy missing her son.

"Okay, I'll go buy it."

Zhao Zhicheng nodded; he was actually soft-hearted too.

Zhao Zhicheng went out to buy groceries, and Lu Xuelian began cleaning Lu Chen's clothes and the messy kitchen.

Lu Chen is usually very clean, and his house is always very tidy. He only does this when he is sick.

Lu Xuelian felt heartbroken as she cleaned.

Zhao Zhicheng bought the groceries and the couple tidied up and started stewing.

While waiting for Lu Chen to wake up, Zhao Zhicheng and Lu Xuelian also took a look around Lu Chen's villa.

They didn't go into the closed area.

The couple both knew tacitly that it was impolite, but they couldn't help doing it.

Lu Chen's study was filled with books, including those on film studies, world theory, and family relationships; he seemed curious about everything.

Some of the sculptures on display were actually carved by Lu Chen himself.

His collection includes film reels, various video cameras, and lenses alone fill an entire wall, along with some certificates of merit.

"Old Zhao, don't you think Old Lu and his wife are a bit strange? They have such an outstanding son, but to everyone they talk about him is terrible, saying he stole things and fought with thugs when he was a kid..."

After touring the villa, Lu Xuelian felt even more sorry for Lu Chen.

According to Lu Yuanshan and Lin Xianghua, Lu Chen was a despicable person who had done all sorts of evil deeds and was a beast in human form.

But in reality, he hadn't committed any crime; even prisoners in labor camps have a chance to reform.

On the surface, Lu Chen hadn't done anything wrong, but their daughter, Zhao Yujiao, was incredibly audacious enough to try and take someone's life...

Lu Xuelian reflected on the failures of her education.

"Let's not talk about that anymore. It's already three o'clock in the afternoon. I'll go wake him up to eat something."

Zhao Zhicheng also felt a pang of guilt. If he had such a promising son, he would walk with his head held high.

Zhao Yujiao was unruly and willful from a young age, and she often hit people, but she did not turn out badly under their strict education.

But after they recognized the Lu family couple as godparents, the strict couple became gentler, always saying that the child was too young to understand. Zhao Yujiao didn't listen to them at all. Although they said she was their biological daughter, she was actually closer to the Lu family. When she grew up, the gifts she bought for Old Lu were better than the gifts she bought for him.

It's true what they say, comparisons are odious, and you can't compare a horse to a mule.

But no matter how good or bad other people's homes are, they are still other people's homes; no matter how bad your own home is, it is still your own.

Zhao Zhicheng went upstairs and patted Lu Chen, calling to him, "Lu Chen, wake up."

Lu Chen opened his eyes. After sleeping, he felt much warmer all over. He didn't feel so cold or weak anymore.

Looking at Zhao Zhicheng, he asked with some confusion, "Uncle Zhao, what brings you here?"

Lu Chen was stunned after he finished speaking. Zhao Zhicheng must have come for Zhao Yujiao. They already knew what Zhao Yujiao had done. Even if they beat Zhao Yujiao severely with family discipline, it would not change the fact that they were parents and children.

So Zhao Zhicheng came to me hoping I could smooth things over...

“You didn’t look well the other day, and your aunt said she wanted to come and see you. We came to see you today, but there was no response when we rang the doorbell. We were worried about your health, so we took the liberty of climbing over the wall to come in. You are indeed weak. Your aunt asked me to buy a rooster to make soup for you. It has been simmering for several hours now. I thought you must be hungry after sleeping for so long.”

Zhao Zhicheng explained with some guilt, for some reason, he felt he couldn't face Lu Chen.

His explanation was too far-fetched. He didn't even dare to look Lu Chen in the eye, feeling ashamed that he had raised such a daughter.

He also bears responsibility for Zhao Yujiao's actions; a father's fault lies in his son's lack of proper upbringing.

"Thank you, Uncle and Aunt."

Lu Chen quickly understood, but since Zhao Zhicheng didn't say it, he pretended it didn't exist.

Lu Chen got up and found that the house had been cleaned up and all the mess had been tidied up.

Warm food was laid out on the dining table in the living room. Lu Xuelian was carrying out a bowl of soup. Seeing him come downstairs, she smiled and said, "Come and try my cooking. This rooster is especially good today."

The chicken soup has turned thick and white, and it has already developed a gelatinous texture.

She also removed the oil from her food, and it's not suitable to eat too much oil when you're sick.

Lu Chen sat down, his heart aching. Even if it was fake, he still craved this moment of care.

The chicken soup smelled delicious, and the porridge smelled delicious too; he seemed to be able to taste the flavors.

After finishing their meal, Lu Xuelian and Zhao Zhicheng cleaned up the dishes.

Lu Chen could see the couple tidying up together from the living room, and he couldn't help but feel envious.

He truly envied Zhao Yujiao for having such wonderful parents and such loving godparents who still loved and protected her even after she did something wrong.

Lu Chen closed his eyes. No matter what, he would not budge, not even if someone came.

Lu Xuelian and Zhao Zhicheng finished getting ready and came out together. Lu Xuelian looked at Lu Chen and said, "You're still not fully recovered. It would be better to find a caregiver to take care of you. Your uncle and I will head back now."
