Chapter 1

"Spores?"

"My...seeds." He didn't know how to explain.

Every mushroom will have spores in its life, some have countless, some have only one. Spores are the seeds of mushrooms. They will grow from the gills, scattered by the wind anywhere in the jungle, take root, and become a new mushroom. Then, this mushroom will gradually grow and have its own spores. Raising spores to maturity is the only mission of a mushroom in its life, but it lost its only spore when it was far from mature.

Anze turned his head slowly, and Anzhe could hear the clicking sound of his bones when they turned, like an old human machine.

"Don't go there," the human's voice was hoarse and his speech was accelerated, "You will die."

An Zhe read the word again: "...die?"

"Only humans can enter the human base, you can't escape the eyes of the judge." An Ze coughed a few times, then took a breath with difficulty: "Don't go...little mushroom."

An Zhe said blankly: "I..."

The human's hand suddenly grabbed An Zhe's mycelium. He used a lot of strength, and his breathing became more and more rapid.

"Be obedient," after violent trembling and panting, An Ze slowly closed his eyes, his voice was very low, "You have no offensive power and no defense, you are just...a very small mushroom."

Sometimes, An Zhe regretted telling An Ze that he was going to the human base.

If he hadn't told Anze, Anze wouldn't have spent the last time trying to stop him. He might still be able to listen to Anze's story, or take him out of this dim cave and see the changing aurora in the sky for the last time. But Anze's eyes would never open again.

The short-lived memory dissipated into the air, just like Anze's life suddenly dissipated in this world. Anzhe still had only a snow-white skull in front of him.

However, he still had to go against Anze's wishes.

——He slowly opened his fingers.

On the delicate skin and light lines of his palm, quietly lay a copper-colored, metallic, cylindrical bullet shell. It was heavy, with some incomprehensible but unusual lines on it. He had found it in that place after losing his spores, and he had never let it go since he got it.

If there was a one in ten thousand chance that he could find his spores, then this one in ten thousand chance would be on this bullet shell, which was created by humans.

With a sigh, he put the bullet shell into the animal skin backpack left by An Ze, bent down, and picked up the clothes that An Ze had worn. A bloodstained off-white long-sleeved shirt, black hard overalls, and black leather boots.

After doing this, he walked out of the cave. The slightly loose clothes rubbed against his skin as he walked, and a slight electric current was transmitted from the nerve endings buried in the skin to the heart. Anzhe, who used the human form for the first time, was not used to it. He frowned and rolled up the sleeves of his loose shirt.

The cave was long and winding, with vines piled on the walls. The vines pushed each other, and when Anzhe passed by here, the tide receded and lingered at the top of the cave.

After three turns, the wind blew in, very humid. The mushroom pushed aside the dead vines hanging from the cave entrance. Mushrooms, his kind, were endless in the field of vision, from near and far. They seemed to be high in the sky, always very quiet and silent. Under the cover of the umbrella, dim skylight shone in. The sky was gray, flashing with some chaotic green light. An Zhe smelled the scent of rain, fog, snakes and rotting plants.

It was still evening. He sat down under the umbrella of the gray-white mushroom closest to the cave entrance and took out a dark yellow map from his backpack. There were blocks of different shades of color on the map, marking the degree of danger in different areas. Anze once pointed out to Anzhe the approximate location of the cave they were in. This was the darkest area on the entire map, which meant a six-star danger level and a six-star pollution level area, called the "Abyss". On the map, the area where the Abyss was located was also marked with many strange symbols. Anzhe checked them one by one according to the index in the lower right corner of the map. Those symbols meant that the Abyss was distributed with extremely high density of mushrooms, man-eating vines, man-eating bushes, simple mammal monsters, hybrid mammal monsters, ordinary reptile monsters, poisonous reptile monsters, winged monsters, amphibian monsters, hybrid polymorphic monsters, humanoid monsters... At the same time, there were canyons, hills, mountains, human abandoned cities, and road ruins in the Abyss.

North up and south down, his sight went all the way up. In the upper right corner of this mottled map, there was a pure white area marked by a bright red diagonal star. On the right side of the diagonal star was written the name of this area: Northern Base.

The green light in the sky became stronger and stronger, and the background color gradually deepened into black. At midnight, An Zhe could barely make out the traces of the stars in the sky. He knew that the brightest one was called the North Pole, which could indicate the direction.

So he aimed the upward arrow in the upper left corner of the map in the direction of the North Pole, stepped on the rotten wood, fallen leaves, mycelium and soil on the ground, and walked out step by step.

The night was not dark. In the sky, those changing green lights - humans call them auroras, illuminated the front, and An Zhe's vision was only mushrooms.

Yellow, red, brown, mushrooms with large caps.

Small mushrooms densely gathered on rocks.

Round mushroom pods scattered on the ground, and when mature, they spray spores like mist.

These spores fall to the ground and begin to split in the moist fallen leaves and soil, growing into spherical mushroom pods like their mother.

There are mushrooms without caps, just white or yellow tentacles, clustered together, or separated radially, floating in the air like seaweed.

But this is not a world of only mushrooms, vines, mosses, bushes, man-eating flowers and strange trees are quietly lurking in the night. Among the jungles of plants, some dark shadows, some strange shapes, animals, or a mixture of humans and animals, were running, howling, and fighting in the jungle. Animals fought with animals, animals fought with plants, or plants fought with plants. High and low howling sounds hit Anzhe's eardrums. The stones and soil were mixed with fresh bloodstains of various colors. He witnessed a pine tree bending down and swallowing a long snake with black scales and two tails. He also saw a toad - a very large toad, which stretched out its bright red long tongue to wrap around an empty bat with human arms on its back. A few minutes after swallowing the bat, a pair of black wings grew out on its back covered with bumps and mucus, curled up. This was a scene that Mushroom saw very often, and he had long been accustomed to it.

At this moment, a gray beast came over. It had four eyes, and was covered with scales, feathers, and fur. It had a head like a crocodile, a body like a large wolf, and seven teeth protruding from its lips. It approached Anzhe and sniffed him with its blood-red nose.

Anzhe did not move, but leaned quietly beside a mushroom, breathing evenly until his whole body was sniffed.

The huge monster seemed to have gained nothing, and turned away with heavy steps.

Anzhe realized that nothing would pay attention to him, even if he used a human body - perhaps because mushrooms were everywhere here, had no nutrition, were not aggressive, and were sometimes poisonous. So he and the others seemed to be creatures from two different worlds, living in peace.

Maybe, as Anze said, he was just a small mushroom.
